Movie trailer roundup: ‘Carrie’ & ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ [Update: ‘Jack Reacher’ & ‘Skyfall’]

First up is a teaser trailer for the anticipated remake of the 1976 film Carrie. Based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel of the same name, Carrie follows a sheltered high school girl who unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after she is pushed too far by her peers. The new Carrie White is played by rising star Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-AssLet Me In), and her abusive mother Margaret is played by Julianne Moore. In the original Brian De Palma film these roles will famously filled by Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. The remake is directed by Kimberly Peirce (Stop-Loss) and it comes out March 15, 2013. By the looks of this tantalizing teaser, the new Carrie is shaping up to be a bloody good time. The gallery below contains gory and frightening images of Moretz and Moore in character provided by EW.

Kathryn Bigelow’s next war film following the critically acclaimed The Hurt Locker is Zero Dark Thirty. It tells the story of how American special ops forces hunted down terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. The action thriller stars Jessica Chastain (The Help), Jason Clarke (The Chicago Code), and Joel Edgerton (Warrior). Bigelow teamed up with Locker collaborator Mark Boal for the script. Things get intense December 19, 2012. Above sits the newly released trailer; below resides the original teaser.

Update: Got another trailer for you. Tom Cruise is the title character in Jack Reacher, an upcoming adaptation of the 2005 novel One Shot by author Lee Child. A synopsis follows.

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter—a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right—and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning—and then beat him shot for shot.

In the book, Reacher is a giant of a man at 6 feet 5 inches tall. Cruise, on the other hand, is not. Lee assures audiences that he gets the job done, however. “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way,” says Lee. :With another actor, you might get 100 percent of the height but only 90 percent of Reacher. With Tom, you’ll get 100 percent of Reacher with 90 percent of the height.”

Watch the trailer above and you decide if the choice of actor was right. Ask me? I smell the birth of a franchise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Jack Reacher opens December 21, 2012.

Update 2: Another day, another look at Skyfall. Bond returns to the big screen November 9.
