‘SNL’ sketch round-up: October 26, 2013

This week Edward Norton hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest Janelle Monae. A rundown of my favorite sketches follows after the break.

This was Edward Norton’s first time hosting SNL and I’ve got to say he did a pretty great job with the material provided. Unfortunately the majority of his sketches were not that funny, but he committed to every role with style and his high energy level was quite infectious. Alec Baldwin and a completely unnecessary Miley Cyrus assisted Norton’s mostly entertaining monologue; the man can do impressions! His hillbilly character in “Critter Control” is quite good (his monologuing concluding with “And my name has been Russell” had me laughing); his numbers savant in “Drug Deal” and his wild conversation about sex in the restaurant bit were fun but those sketches did drag on few minutes long; his comedic timing shined in the “Halloween Candy” sketch–I’m thinking this last bit was the night’s best. “Has anybody had more fun than I just did? No!” exclaimed Norton before the credits rolled and this cements my point from earlier–though the sketch’s were mostly meh, Norton owned it and had a great time.

Have to give honorable mentions to the Wes Anderson horror trailer–great impressions abound and they did a great job editing it to make it a fine Anderson parody trailer; Kate McKinnon proved she can do a cold open with poise and finesse; and Bobby Moynihan upped his game yet again as second hand correspondent Anthony Crispino during Weekend Update.

Next week on SNL, Kerry Washington hosts with musical guest Eminem.
