Movie trailer round-up: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, ‘Jupiter Ascending’, ‘Godzilla’, ‘Interstellar’ & ‘Bad Words’

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt star in the sci-fi time travel pic Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again… and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Yeah, this one is a can’t miss. Edge of Tomorrow, formally known as All You Need Is Kill–the name of the Japanese novel it is based on–hits theatres June 6, 2014.

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in another original science fiction epic from Matrix directors Lana and Andy Wachowski; Jupiter Ascending this is their followup to last year’s Cloud Atlas.

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

If you enjoyed Cloud Atlas and all its grandeur, it’s pretty much guaranteed you will take pleasure in watching Jupiter Ascending in theatres July 25, 2014.

The “King of the Monsters” is coming back to theatres in Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston.

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Though the monster is merely teased in this teaser trailer, the Orbital Drop Shock-esque troupers sequence and the destruction that follows is enough to get kaiju fans clammy in anticipation of Godzilla out May 16, 2014.

Christopher Nolan’s next movie is of the science fiction variety. Little is known about Interstellar; in fact this teaser trailer doesn’t shed light on the film’s actual plot which has only just been detailed in a brief summary:

Interstellar chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Instead it features a voiceover by star Matthew McConaughey discussing man’s greatest achievements and proving the impossible is possible. Interstellar is an original story imagined by Nolan and the director collaborated with his brother Jonathan on the script. McConaughey is joined by Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, and Bill Irwin. And now for the rather unfortunate news: Interstellar reaches theatres one year from now on November 7, 2014.

Arrested Development‘s Jason Bateman puts on a director’s hat in Bad Words. He stars in his directorial debut alongside Allison Janney, Ben Falcone, Rachael Harris, Philip Baker, and Kathryn Hahn. Bateman is Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old man who finds a loophole which allows him to compete in the National Spelling Bee. He crushes his grade-school competition and along the way he forms a relationship with a young boy. Watch the offensive and funny red-band NSFW trailer here; Bad Words releases March 21, 2014.
