Movie trailer round-up: Tim Burton and The Lonely Island return to the big screen, plus CG animation goes rated R

Tim Burton, the visionary director behind quirky cult oddities such as Edward ScissorhandsSweeney Todd, and Big Fish, has discovered a new fantasy land to play in with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The 2011 young adult best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs is being adapted for the big screen by Burton with stars Eva Green (Casino Royale), Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench, and Samuel L. Jackson. The peculiar tale practically begs Burton to bring it to life, and it goes like this:

When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.

The orphanage is home to children with all kinds of wild eccentricities including but certainly not limited to invisibility, a super cool eye projector, and flight. In typical Burton fashion, the movie will embark on an exhilarating adventure filled with fun and even some scares.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children opens September 30.

Jump after the break to view trailers for the next movies from The Lonely Island and Seth Rogen. Update (3/24): A fun teaser trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie came out today, and you’ll find that after the break, too.

The Lonely Island is teaming up again to make a second feature film! The Dudes, consisting of former SNL cast member Andy Samberg and writers Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, are following up 2007’s Hot Rod with Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all. In addition to Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone, expect lots of celebrity cameos in this one; you’ll catch many of them in the restricted trailer embedded above. As a longtime fan of TLI’s Digital Shorts and “fake MC” comedy rap albums, I’m hoping Popstar manages to pack in some original songs penned and produced by The Dudes. Perhaps we’ll even get a funky soundtrack, too!

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, produced by Judd Apatow, written by The Lonely Island trio, and directed by Schaffer and Taccone, hits theatres June 3.

Sausage Party is about one sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store. But all is not what it seems, for Sausage Party is the first R-rated CG animated movie from the minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Super BadPineapple Express). It doesn’t take long for the Pixar-like animated foods to open their foul mouths in this red-band trailer, and the effect is instantly jarring and hilarious (you know, if you’re into this sort of potty mouth humor). Sony Pictures is taking a risk here, but if this preview proves anything, it’s that Sausage Party looks like a scandalous, fun time. Plus, it only helps that the voice cast is golden; it includes Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek.

Sausage Party is out August 12.

Here’s your first look at The LEGO Movie spinoff starring Will Arnett (Arrested Development) as the Caped Crusader. Arnett stepped in to voice Batman in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s 2014 animated hit, and now the scene-stealing character is getting his very own movie. There’s not much to the current logline, but here it goes:

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Rounding out the fine voice cast: Ralph Fiennes (Alfred the Butler), Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl), and Zach Galifianakis (The Joker). Batman beatboxes. Looks fun!

The LEGO Batman Movie opens February 10, 2017.
