A Lonely Island movie is in the works!

Posted in Movies,News by Scott Meisner on August 13th, 2014

The Lonely Island aka The Dudes aka Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer are making another movie together. The last time the SNL Digital Short guys collaborated on a feature film was in 2007; the absurd genius that is Hot Rod was the result. This time around they are teaming up with Universal Pictures and prolific producer Judd Apatow to make a comedy set in the world of music, according to Variety. TLI is no stranger to making music; in addition to producing comedic music videos for SNL like “Jizz in my Pants” and “I’m On a Boat,” they’ve gone on to release three comedy-rap albums: Incredibad (2009), Turtleneck & Chain (2011), and The Wack Album (2013). The untitled pic will be directed by Schaffer (Hot Rod) and Taccone (MacGruber). All three Dudes are expected to star. In short, this project has the potential to be insanely outrageous and hilarious packed with a catalog of TLI-infused tunes. At the very least, we’re likely to get a new Lonely Island album out of it! Next stop: trailer town.

The Lonely Island counts down to ‘The Wack Album’ with new LOL material (video inside)

Posted in Hilarity,Music,Video by Scott Meisner on June 8th, 2013

We knew it was in the works, and now here’s proof. The Lonely Island is about to drop their third fake rap album The Wack Album which follows their 2009 debut Incredibad and 2011′s Turtleneck & Chain. The 20-track release includes SNL Digital Short entries “YOLO” (featuring Adam Levine & Kendrick Lamar) and “3-Way (The Golden Rule)” (featuring Justin Timberlake & Lady Gaga) as well as a slew of new material. A month ago the dudes announced “Wack Wednesdays;” every Wednesday the comedy troupe would release a new track off their new record leading up its June 11 release. That date is coming up quick (it’s this Tuesday) so now’s the perfect time to turn up your speakers and listen to all the Wack Wednesday clips at once!

After the break, enjoy “Spring Break Anthem” (with cameos by Zach Galifianakis, James Franco & Edward Norton), “I F****d My Aunt” (featuring T-Pain), “Diaper Money,” the brilliant “Semicolon” (featuring Solange) [plus a live version with Alanis Morissette], Go Kindergarten (featuring Robyn), and “Spell It Out.” The full tracklist is also posted and it includes more features from Pharrell Williams, Hugh Jackman & Kristen Wiig, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Too $hort. Preorder The Wack Album at Amazon today. TLI is still at the top of the fake rap game, I gotta say. (Click here for more…)

Remember that oh-so-awesome snippet from Daft Punk’s upcoming new record Random Access Memories. Since then, the good have been delivered: the first single from the French duo’s followup album to 2005′s Human After All is titled “Get Lucky” and it features the classic electronic sound fused with lyrics from Pharrell Williams and wicked guitar plucks provided by Nile Rodgers. It’s predictably catchy and will have you foaming at the mouth for more where this came from. Download the single today at iTunes, and prepare to upgrade your RAM May 17.

The Lonely Island returns with “YOLO” (Featuring Adam Levine)

Posted in Hilarity,Music,Television,Video by Scott Meisner on February 2nd, 2013

Andy Samberg made a surprise return to Saturday Night Live last weekend, and he brought with him his Lonely Island pals. Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer teamed up with host Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and NBC’s The Voice and musical guest and up-and-coming rapper Kendrick Lamar to cook up a new music video called “YOLO.” It’s some of their best work yet. Watch it here. And like most of TLI’s clips you’ll have it on repeat in no time.

Kristen Wiig parts ways with ‘SNL’ (also, Samberg’s “Lazy Sunday 2″ video inside!)

Posted in Hilarity,News,Television,Video by Scott Meisner on May 20th, 2012

Last night Kristin Wiig made it official with a curtain call at the end of the season 37 finale. After spending seven wonderful years as a member of the Saturday Night Live cast, Wiig has decided to move on to shift her focus on other projects including film ventures. In her final episode Wiig played some of her most memorable characters including the bizarre small hands freakshow in the “Lawrence Welk” cold opening (with Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm!) and the theatrical Mindy in “The Secret Word” game show sketch. Also brought back was the instant classic “The Californians” for a second round before her departure. (I probably could have done with one more Kathy Lee Gifford impression, Gilly (with Will Forte!), the Target lady, and movie reviewer Aunt Linda); but we’ll always have the archives.) At the very end of the show she “graduated” and received hugs from all her castmates and SNL head honcho Lorne Michaels in a very emotional send off. In case you missed it, you can watch the goodbye after the break.

It was rumored that Andy Samberg and Jason Sudekis would also be leaving this season because their contracts are up, too. In the past two weeks Samberg and his Lonely Island crew celebrated 100 Digital Shorts and brought back SNL alum Chris Parnell for a sequel to their breakout viral rap “Lazy Sunday.” You can watch both of these hysterical clips after the break. For Samberg this feels like a nice send off; Sudekis, however, was featured in only a handful of sketches as of late. Though nothing has been confirmed by NBC yet, don’t be surprised if these two aren’t included in next season’s opening credits. We can hope that Samberg will return every now and then for a Digital Short, and Sudekis should reprise his role as Republican Mitt Romney (especially if he becomes the next POTUS).

For now, farewell Kristen Wiig. The show will go on, but it will never be the same without you. (Click here for more…)

The Lonely Island’s ‘Turtleneck & Chain’ now available for hearing

Posted in Hilarity,Music,News,Video by Scott Meisner on May 10th, 2011

The Dudes are back. In anticipation of their second studio album (the followup to the incredible Incredibad), the Dudes of the Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer) released wickedly hilarious SNL Digital Shorts like “Motherlover,” “Threw It On the Ground,” “I Just Had Sex,” “Shy Ronnie 2,” “The Creep,” “We’re Back,” and their most recent creation “Jack Sparrow.” You’ll find all of these tracks and more on Turtleneck and Chain, available in stores now. The guest list is insane: Justin Timberlake, Akon, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Michael Bolton, Beck, Snoop Dogg, and Santigold all make memorable appearances.

Two versions of the album exist. The standard version (iTunes) contains 19 tracks. The deluxe version (Amazon/iTunes) packs the 19 songs, adds the bonus track “Reba (Two Worlds Collide) featuring Kenan Thompson,” and nine videos. All but one of the included videos are Digital Short fare, a never-before-seen video for “We’ll Kill U.”

Oh, and there’s one more thing. Should you opt to purchase the album at a local Best Buy make sure you bring this coupon with you. With it for $15.99 you’ll get the CD/DVD package and a super cool and exclusive Lonely Island-branded t-shirt. Or you can use it to get the album itself for a low $7.99.

Now check out a bunch of the album photos in the gallery below, then jump after the break to sing about the adventures of Jack Sparrow with Michael Bolton! It doesn’t get any better than this.

The Lonely Island performs “I Just Had Sex” live at the Comedy Awards

Posted in Music,Video by Scott Meisner on April 12th, 2011

On Sunday night The Lonely Island performed the lead single off their upcoming sophomore album at the inaugural Comedy Awards. Along with rapper Akon, the Dudes took over the stage and belted out their respective verses and they even managed to include a throwback to last year’s hit “I’m On a Boat.”

Turtleneck & Chain drops May 10.

The Lonely Island reveals new album title, cover & release date, premieres “We’re Back!” music video

Posted in Music,Video by Scott Meisner on April 2nd, 2011

I’ve got big news for all you Lonely Island fans out there. The Dudes (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone) opened up about their followup album to 2009′s Grammy-nominated smash hit Incredibad last night during their guest stint on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The record’s called Turtleneck & Chain and it drops May 10 on Universal Republic Records. The album cover features the Dudes, well, acting all cool in turtlenecks and chains (see it after the break). When asked why they chose this particular image for the new album Jorma admitted that “when we met each other in eighth grade that was pretty much the look that we all had.” In addition to spilling all this info, the Dudes used LNWJF as a platform to premiere the the first track off the album; it’s called “We’re Back!” and its embedded above waiting for you to hit play. You probably don’t have to be warned, but be mindful of the insane amount of profanity used in the video. The black-and-white vid is all about dicks. So, yeah. Jorma is the major player here, but Akiva and Andy spit nasty rhymes too. Jorma ends the song with this: “We started this fake rap sh–, the world needs us!” He’s right, we do.

So kick back and watch “We’re Back,” and while you’re in a Lonely Island mood rewatch “I Just Had Sex” and “The Creep” (two other confirmed tracks on the record) and start counting down the days til Turtleneck & Chain’s May 10 release.

The Lonely Island become ROKK Vodka ‘Creative Directors’; watch their first ad here

Posted in Hilarity,Video by Scott Meisner on November 29th, 2010

The Lonely Island–aka The Dudes, aka SNL’s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer–were recently appointed “Creative Directors” for Swedish imported ROKK Vodka.  Apparently they will be “responsible for the brand’s consumer engagement, which includes creating digital material to market the brand and help introduce ROKK, the premium priced, freeze filtered vodka.”  Says head Dude Andy Samberg: “Most people ask us to just make videos, but Diageo asked us to be Creative Directors, which sounded fancier. Anyone who’s seen our videos knows we’re fancy guys, so we said yes. And they also gave us a bunch of ROKK Vodka, which we enjoy drinking with our mouths.”

Watch the group’s first “ROKK video short” above.  Additional content is expected to hit the ‘Net soon.  Full PR after the break.

Andy Samberg fights Jack Johnson in music video “At or With Me”

Posted in Hilarity,Music,Video by Scott Meisner on September 22nd, 2010

Despite all the times SNL cast member Andy Samberg’s made fun of the too-mellow Jack Johnson, the artist asked for him to take part in his latest music video for the track “At or With Me” off the album To The Sea.  Punches are thrown, bottles are cracked; all in all it’s a rowdy, fun time.  Samberg is joined by Lonely Island mates Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.

SNL Digital Short: The Lonely Island – “Boombox”

Posted in Hilarity,Music,Video by Scott Meisner on March 14th, 2010

The Loney Island is back with their latest music video off their debut album Incredibad.  “Boombox” adds to a growing list of SNL Digital Shorts that have been made featuing songs off the album; they include “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” “Natalie’s Rap,”  “We Like Sportz,” “Ras Trent,” “Space Olympics,” “Jizz In My Pants,” “I’m On a Boat,” and “Like a Boss.”  The Dudes (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer & Jorma Taccone) have made another hilarious video for another great song.  “Boombox” features vocals from The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas and is directed by Kiv.  Having listened to it many times, this video totally lived up to my imagination.

THE LONELY ISLAND :: The Ultimate Collection

Posted in Hilarity,Music,Review,Television,Video by Scott Meisner on June 19th, 2009

The dudes.  Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer.  You know Andy from Saturday Night Live.  His two friends, Jorm and Kiv, are writers for the show.  Together they are known as The Lonely Island.

They started as writers for the MTV Movie Awards.  Fellow SNL cast member Jimmy Fallon discovered them when he hosted the MTV Movie Awards many years ago.  The rest is history.

The Dudes are known for their genius work in the SNL Digital Shorts.  It started with “Lettuce,” hit a strong stride with “Jizz in my Pants” and “I’m on a Boat” (feat. T-Pain), and has let to their latest creations, “Motherlover” and “Cool Guys Don’t Look at Explosions.”  That lastest video was shown during the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, which Andy Samberg hosted.

Their debut comic album Incredibad is a must-buy.  Songs include “Dick in a Box,” “Natalie’s Rap,” “Space Olympics,” and others you may not have heard before, including “Sax Man” (feat. Jack Black) and their retrospective piece, “Incredibad.”  Not only is every song funny, but each has its own creative hip-hop beat that beautifully and hilariously mocks the hip-hop and rap genres.  Utilizing auto-tune over their witty verses, the Dudes have created a unique work of art that stems from their personal lives and today’s society.  Simply put, it is very funny, good music.  Preview and purchase it on iTunes here.

Check after the break (click “more…”) for a large collection of some of my favorite songs and videos by The Lonely Island.  Also, be sure to check out their YouTube page for all of their work.  Some of their early videos (pre-SNL) are hilarious.  Keep it coming, Dudes. (Click here for more…)
