Yvette Nicole Brown is not returning to ‘Community’

Another one bites the dust. Following the departures of Chevy Chase in season 4 and Donald Glover in season 5, Community is losing a third member of the original study group in season 6. Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley Bennett, will not be a series regular when Community makes its debut on Yahoo next year. In fact, her exit will take place off screen. Her father isn’t doing so well, and so she made the decision not to participate in the new episodes.

“My dad needs daily care and he needs me,” Brown tells TV Guide. “The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.”

She may, however, return to guest star at some point in the future. “I am totally open to whatever Dan decides,” she says. “I’m glad it won’t be hard for them to explain where she is. She has three kids, a degree and a business. There are a lot of ways to explain her [departure].” That’s true.

She goes on to assure fans the show will continue to delight in its quirky ways, even without Shirley’s presence. “I’m still Community’s biggest fan and I’ll still live Tweet episodes,” she says. “It’s very bittersweet. I can take care of my dad but won’t be with my TV family. I don’t want the fans to worry; it’s going to be fine. Greendale is the heart of the show, not any particular character. Even if characters come and go, the heart of Greendale remains.”

Brown will go on to star in CBS’ reboot The Odd Couple with Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon. “A multi-camera sitcom is a better fit for the life I have now,” she says. “I can’t say enough how much I respect [producer] Sony and [Community leader] Dan [Harmon] for how they handled this profound change in my life.”

Christina Applegate exits ‘Up All Night’

Up All Night is tearing at the seams. After NBC pulled the show from it schedule in December, it decided to change the single-cam sitcom to multi-cam with a live audience and all and amidst the news of such a drastic revamp series creator Emily Spivey departed the show and original showrunner Jon Pollack stepped away as did his successor Tucker Cawley. And now, series star Christina Applegate is leaving.

“It’s been a great experience working on Up All Night, but the show has taken a different creative direction and I decided it was best for me to move on to other endeavors,” said Applegate. “Working with [executive producer] Lorne Michaels has been a dream come true and I am grateful he brought me into his TV family. I will miss the cast, producers and crew, and wish them the best always.”

Like Spivey before her, Applegate could not accept the massive creative changes happening at the show and so she bid it adieu. So what exactly does this mean for the show? NBC has yet to comment on the news, but according to Deadline the show is not dead yet and they’re looking at replacing Applegate’s with a new actress, possibly Lisa Kudrow of Friends fame.

NBC ordered five more episodes to round out Up All Night‘s second season. With an Applegate replaced it can technically live on to test its multi-cam experiment this spring. When the show’s overhaul was announced I was a bit skeptical about its future; now with Applegate out I don’t see it having one.

Update (2/12): According to Deadline, NBC has reduced the multi-cam episode order from 5 to 1 and the network is still interested in testing new waters even without the show’s star Christina Applegate. James Burrows is set to direct the episode.

Chevy Chase exits ‘Community’

On Wednesday news broke that Pierce Hawthorne dropped out of Greendale Community College for good. Chevy Chase, who plays the bumbling, bigoted former CEO of a Moist Towelette company, will no longer take part in the NBC sitcom Community effective immediately. The actor and the show “are parting ways by mutual agreement,” according to Deadline. The site also reports that as of Wednesday only one or two episodes of the thirteen that comprise the long-delayed season 4 have yet to be filmed so Chase’s character will in fact appear in most of the upcoming episodes. Additionally, episodes were shot out of order; though Chase won’t appear in some episodes leading up to the season finale, he will (likely) be present in the May capper which has already been shot and wrapped.

If you’ve been following the tumultuous news coming out of Community even before series creator Dan Harmon was ousted this news shouldn’t really come as a total surprise. Prior to Harmon’s exit, there was a very public beef between the showrunner and Chevy Chase involving a nasty voicemail left by Chase. With Harmon out of the picture, just last month Chase went on a tirade in the middle of production vocally sharing his displeasure of the way his character was being portrayed; the N-word was tossed around on a set that includes two African American stars. In between there have been numerous reports of Chase storming off the set, and he has made it known that he’s not a fan of the TV sitcom in general. All in all, Chase’s exit was inevitable.

With the series creator and one of the show’s main stars out of the picture, can Community survive past a fourth season. We’ll see how it performs when it finally returns to NBC’s schedule February 7 at 8PM. Harmon had fun with Pierce Hawthorne and he made a formidable antagonist last season, but perhaps the character has run its course and the show will be better off without a hot-headed presence around. With a strong ensemble cast led by Joel McHale, the prospect of six seasons and a movie still lies ahead methinks.
