Kid Cudi & other artists design unique beer bottle labels for Beck’s

Musician Kid Cudi was approached by Beck’s to design a unique label for their beer bottles. It’s an annual tradition for Beck’s; this year six artists from different disciplines were selected to participate in creating limited edition beer labels. Over 13 million bottles featuring custom labels imagined by Cudi, fashion designer and entrepreneur Marc Ecko, artist and musician Willis Earl Beal, multi-medium artists The Date Farmers, interactive digital duo TM Sisters, and photographer William Hundley will sell for the remainder of the summer. Check out this clip from Beck’s starring Cudder as he details the label design he came up with; the three rings that make up the background of the label represent Cudi’s Man on the Moon albums (yes, a third album to close out the trilogy is in the works).

Eye the new designs in the gallery below, and watch the other artists’ videos at Beck’s YouTube channel.

‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 to air longer episodes; plus a series-inspired beer is in the works

March might not feel so close right now, but I’m about to make the wait a bit more bearable. Today EW broke news that the third season of Game of Thrones will feature longer episodes than ever before. Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff explain the situation thusly. “There’s almost another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season,” says Weiss. “One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.” So what are we talking about exactly? “Last year we had a lot of 52-minute episodes. This year is a lot of 56, 57,” adds Benioff. This should come as a pleasant surprise for not only fans of the show but also the readers of the books on which the series is based. Season 3 plans to cover approximately the first half of George R.R. Martin’s thickest Song of Ice and Fire novel, A Storm of Swords. “A super-sized season, as befitting Storm of Swords,” Benioff exclaims. Additionally, EW reports that a jam-packed season 3 finale will likely exceed an hour in length provided HBO gives the fantasy series the go-ahead. In sum, though HBO still caps the episode count at 10 it will feel like there’s 11 when all is said and done. “So for people clamoring for another episode, it’s in there,” Weiss elaborates. “It’s just been cut into tiny pieces.”

Game of Thrones premieres March 31, 2013. To learn about the series-inspired beer, jump after the break. Continue reading ‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 to air longer episodes; plus a series-inspired beer is in the works

Beer cannon flings you a cold one on (iPhone) command

Now this is flipping brilliant.  A college student has transformed his old mini fridge into a beer cannon!  Check this: Using a custom-made iPhone app, he can select a desired beer brand (the system vends four types of beer), adjust the fridge temperature, manage the beer’s final destination, and fire the beer with a force of 50psi to the selected position.  That’s right–the fridge is decorated with a webcam and the app has a viewer to help guide the beer to its target.  In addition to launching beers on command, the fridge records every fling and broadcasts them via Twitter so that all your friends can know when you’re using the coolest thing ever invented…ever.

Robot responds to “beer me” phrase by–you guessed it–fetching you a beer

The hacker boys of Willow Garage put their minds together to make the coolest robot ever–one that can fetch and serve you beer.  The PR2 robot responds to a web application called Beer Me.  Let’s come up with a situation… It’s the Super Bowl and you and the fellas want a batch of fresh cold beers from the back fridge.  You, the host of the party, will hop onto the nearest computer and run the Beer Me web app.  In it you can access a pull-down menu and specify the exact type of beer everyone wants.  Once the order is set, clicking the Beer Me button will activate the PR2 robot to fetch the beers for you.  The robot will navigate your house, identify the fridge, open its door, scan the racks for the beer, grab and place the beers onto a four-holed foam block (that’s located behind the robot’s base navigation laser), close the fridge door, and report back to you with the drinks.  (Note: If your type of beer is out of stock, the robot will notify the web app so you know to make a beer run.)  Now it’s time for the handoff.  The robot uses facial recognition to detect when a face is in close proximity so that beers are not dropped; in fact, PR2 will not let go of its death grip on the bottle until a face is detected.  After you take your drink, the robot will whip out a bottle opener; you have the option to take it to open the beer yourself, or the robot can do it for you.  Mind blown yet?  See it all happen in the “OMG”-inducing video above.  I want one.

Now this is how you make a beer commericial

Canadian ad firm Dentsu, in collaboration with directors Mark Zibert and Gary Thomas, have created the utlimate beer commercial for Japanese beer company Sapporo.  Titled “Legendary Biru”, the commercial/short film was shot on location for over a month in Guangzhou, China.  It takes us on a journey through Japanese culture and the brewing process.  Our Budweiser frogs and horses can’t touch this vertical time-warp through Japanese mythos.

Happy Hour lets you pop ‘n’ chug with a watch

The Happy Hour Timepiece is a watch that doubles as a bottle opener.  The face of the watch features digital and analog time displays and the black leather strap includes the bottle opener contraption.  Says the manufactuer:

Happy Hour™ is built for those who want to have a little fun opening their beverage with a very stylized watch.  The patented buckle allows you to pop-open your favorite beverage with nothing more than a flick of the wrist—and without taking off your watch.

This ingenious invention is available for $49.95.  Images of the watch below, a video demonstration after the break.

Christmas tree made from 1,000 Heineken beer bottles

sustainable design, green design, recycled materials, green christmas tree, china beer bottle xmas tree, nanjing road, shanghai, repurposed beer bottle christmas tree

Chinese designers decided to go all out this year by constructing a Christmas tree out of 1,000 FULL Heineken beer bottles.  Yeah, that’s a lot of beer right there, just waiting to get toppled over and wasted.  Though the bright green hue of the large stature is quite impressive, the designers could have been a bit more eco-friendly if they were to use the limitless number of empty beer bottles at the ready.  Anyway, check out some close-up shots in more detail in the gallery below.  The “tree” is located in Shanghai, China.
