Sound sculptures are color droplets brought to life

Dentsu London, the design studio that brought us iPad light painting, teamed up with photographer Linden Gledhill to produce an amazing array of “sound sculptures” to promote Canon’s line of PIXMA color printers.  Gledhill used a Canon 5D Mark II to capture these “dancing droplets of paint in extreme detail as they react to sound waves.”  How’d they do it?

The ‘colour sculptures’ were created by stretching a balloon over a speaker to form a membrane.  A few drops of paint were then placed in the centre of the balloon and a single sharp note was played through the speaker, causing the paint to erupt for just a fraction of a second.  We experimented with different instruments, frequencies and volumes, which each had an effect on the formations.

The color droplet experimentation resulted in beautiful imagery and video.  Look in the gallery below to see the makeshift rig and a handful of pictures; after the break you’ll find video of the droplets in super slo-mo action (5,000 frames-per-second slow) and a behind-the-scenes peek into how it was executed.  Head over to Dentsu London’s Flickr and YouTube pages for more content.

HDR video results in ultra realism for aspiring videographers

The fellas at Soviet Montage Productions have managed to implement the HDR process in video using two professional DSLRs.  HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and it involves the process of taking multiple photographs (one underexposed, the other overexposed) and combining the best qualities from each to create the best image possible.  Sounds familiar?  I explained this process recently when Steve Jobs announced that iOS 4.1 would include HDR support in the iPhone’s camera software.  What Soviet Montage has so impressively done is implement the HDR photography technique with video.  Using two Canon 5D MarkIIs and beam splitter, they captured video under different exposure values and used “HDR processing tools” in post to create the visually spectacular video you see above.  The production team find HDR video extremely useful; they say it can “allow for even exposure where artificial lighting is unavailable or impractical.”  The level of detail and realism is mind-boggling, isn’t it?  I look forward to the day Jobs takes the stage to announce HDR video in iPhones; this tech must come to the masses!

House finale shot entirely with Canon 5D Mark II

Director Greg Yaitanes has informed House fans ’round the world that the upcoming season finale of House will filmed using a Canon 5D Mark II, a DSLR that shoots great HD video.  Yaitanes shared the news on Twitter and began fielding questions about the experience.  The meat of the feedback tells us the production team had a spendid time using the camera.  He shot in “24fps and wanted it for ease of use in tight spaces”; he used “all the Canon primes and the 24-70 and the 70-200 zoom” lenses;  he “mostly gave it a hand held feel…or [used it] on a small tripod; and lastly he “loved it and feel it’s the future” of TV filmmaking.  We already know how well the 5D Mark II can shoot; this episode is going to be gorgeous.  The finale airs May 17 at 8PM on FOX.

The only way to save magazines is to bring them to life

Photographer Alexx Henry and his team have created this video to show how creating a “living portrait” could be created and designed in a not-so-distant future.  Here Henry is photographing triathlete Chris Lieto using the RED One and the Canon 5D Mark II cameras for Outside Magazine.  With the newspaper and magazine industries slowly losing the battle against the Internet for providing news, pictures, and other content, animating text and images in these mediums might be the only way to save them from extinction.
