Coldplay films colorful music videos to match new album ‘A Head Full of Dreams’

Coldplay is back with its seventh and possibly final album for awhile, that is, according to frontman Chris Martin. If this is it for the foreseeable future, they sure are going out with a bang. The record, A Head Full of Dreams, is a solid effort from the alt-rock/pop British band. It has its quiet moments (“Everglow” and “Kaleidoscope”) as well as those anthemic tunes fans have become accustomed to over the years (“A Head Full of Dreams,” “Hymn for the Weekend” and “Adventure of a Lifetime”). All in all, it’s a decidedly uplifting and inspiring take, especially coming off last year’s mildly melancholic Ghost Stories.

Shortly after releasing the album into the wild just last month, Martin and co. started to drop eclectic music videos for the singles. They started with a mesmerizing music video for “Adventure of a Lifetime” which features CGI versions of the band members dancing around as apes. They teamed up with director Mat Whitecross and actor/motion capture expert Andy Serkis (Lord of the RingsPlanet of the Apes) to magically animate themselves using the latest tech in 3D motion capture. It took six months to make!

The second music video to release was the one for “Birds.” The band travelled to Salvation Mountain to record the trippy, kaleidoscopic clip directed by Marcus Haney.

Following lead single “Adventure of a Lifetime” is the official second single off the album, “Hymn for the Weekend.” Coldplay shot the video for it on location in Mumbai, India with director Ben Mor. Beyoncè, whose vocals are featured on the track, plays a beautiful movie star and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor makes a cameo as the band runs around the streets of Mumbai exploding with color and radiance.

“Hymn for the Weekend” is embedded above. You’ll find music videos for “Birds” and “Adventure of a Lifetime” after the break. There’s also a fun behind-the-scenes look at Coldplay making the CGI video with Whitecross and Serkis.

One more thing. This summer Coldplay’s going on tour! Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 5 at 10am local time. Check out the full list of nation-wide stops below the fold. Oh, and don’t forget they’ll be jamming out during Super Bowl 50’s halftime show next Sunday! Continue reading Coldplay films colorful music videos to match new album ‘A Head Full of Dreams’

Coldplay announces seventh studio album ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ & releases lead single–listen here

Coldplay has emerged from the studio with a major announcement. Their seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams, drops December 4. Not only that, the ubiquitous British band has released the lead single, “Adventure of a Lifetime,” and it previews the fun-loving, positive ball of energy nature that frontman Chris Martin promises the album will deliver. “We just wanted to make this big, colorful, joyful thing called A Head Full of Dreams,” he told SiriusXM this week. You can listen to new track after the break, and stream it on Spotify and download it on iTunes.

A Head Full Of Dreams consists of 11 tracks (12 if you include the hidden track “X Marks the Spot”) and it will feature a handful of special guests including Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher (of Oasis), Tove Lo, and Merry Clayton. Norwegian duo Stargate and frequent Coldplay collaborator Rik Simpson helped produce the new album which was recorded on both sides of the pond in Malibu and London. Though the band didn’t tour their last release, Ghost Stories, Martin and company promise an exciting world tour is in the works for this latest release.

For Coldplay fans, album #7 may be the last collection of new material from the band for awhile. Last year, Martin let slip to then-BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe that A Head Full of Dreams may very well be Coldplay’s final hurrah. “It’s our seventh thing, and the way we look at it, it’s like the last Harry Potter book or something like that,” he said. “Not to say that there might not be another thing one day, but this is the completion of something.” Sounds to me like they might take an extended hiatus between 7 and 8, rather than dismantling the band for good. Especially if you listen to Martin’s more recent radio interview, it’s apparent that all the bandmates are in a good place and are very grateful for having lasted this long together. I’d be shocked if this was the end, that’s all I’m saying.

Regardless! Play the new single below the fold and preorder the album today. Come Dec. 4, we’ll all have fresh ethereal, feel-good music from the ever-evolving Coldplay. Coldplay rounds up the cast of ‘Game of Thrones’ for a musical, hilarity ensues

“Welcome to the crazy wacky world of Game of Thrones,” sings Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin in this behind the scenes documentary following the making of a musical adaptation of HBO’s hit fantasy series. Taken‘s Liam Neeson lends his signature growl to this funny clip, narrating facts like it’ll take 16 songs to be made before the British band can incorporate them into a full Broadway stage production. Things look bleak when only Mark Addy (Thrones‘ Robert Baratheon) and Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Snow/Bolton) contribute to the cause. Eventually, Kit Harington shows up to truly kick the festivities into high gear (watching Chris Martin embrace Harington as “Jon Snow” is so much funnier than it sounds), and many other Thrones actors start pouring in. The parody has loads of fun with the show’s Theon/Ramsay dynamic, among others. Later, Emilia Clarke belts out a respectable Rastafarian rap about her character’s climb to power, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau comfortably imbues Jamie Lannister by singing “the first romantic ballad about incest in Coldplay’s career.” And then there’s Peter Dinklage grooving to lyrics about his character Tyrion “still going strong;” you can watch that riveting performance in full here.

Obviously (and rather unfortunately) this Game of Thrones musical produced by Coldplay is merely a gag, but its intentions are thoughtful. It was put together for Red Nose Day, a fundraising event that raises money for children in need. The special day originated across the pond in the UK and spread to the US for 2015; this clip first aired on NBC during the network’s Red Nose Day telecast. In case you missed it live and you’re feeling charitable, you can still donate today.

Coldplay incites a jubilant block party in “A Sky Full of Stars” music video

The four members of Coldplay, led by frontman Chris Martin, leisurely bounce along the streets of Sydney, Australia grooving to their EDM-tweaked, Avicii-produced Ghost Stories single “A Sky Full of Stars” in this fun music video made special for the tune. Martin and co. are dressed up as one-man-bands donning instruments like guitars, drums, harmonicas, and bicycle horns, roaming the streets and candidly interacting with a growing crowd that follows them on their four minute musical journey. Smash play and join in on the confettied festivities!

Coldplay drops “Magic” music video ahead of ‘Ghost Stories’ May release

Coldplay is readying their sixth studio album Ghost Stories due out May 19 and in the meantime they’ve dropped two music videos to accompany the record’s two singles “Magic” and “Midnight.” Click the link to watch the negative imagery clip for “Midnight” if you missed out on that last month, and check out Coldplay’s latest offering the clip embedded here. In “Magic,” frontman Chris Martin stars as drunk illusionist as well as the illusionist’s assistant who is after the heart of a young magicienne played by Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The black-and-white video features the “silent film” style incorporating Martin’s soothing vocals and the band’s flowing instrumentals. It’s a soft song but it’s definitely an uplifting one, metaphorically and thanks to this music video quite literally, too.

Coldplay drops new single & music video “Midnight” [Update: new album ‘Ghost Stories’ out this May]

Coldplay fans are due a new album. Their last album, Mylo Xyloto, released way back in 2011. And if you look at their release track record, they’ve drop a new album every three years starting with their splendid sophomore effort A Rush of the Blood to the Head (2002). So we’ve made it to 2014 and whatddya know–Coldplay leaks out a new single called “Midnight” with an accompanying music video (see above). The song’s lyrics are quite simple; what’s most (for lack of a better term) fascinating about the track is its synthy sound and how much it resembles another artist who goes by Bon Iver. In “Midnight” Coldplay frontman Chris Martin plays around with his vocals using a vocoder and there’s no denying the similarity to Justin Vernon’s performance style. That said, the song represents Coldplay’s continued journey into pop-rock experimentation following 2008’s Viva la Vida and Mylo Xyloto. If you are a fan of those releases then it would appear you’ll be totally into what Coldplay has in store next. If you reminisce about the “Clocks” and “Yellow” days then this might not be your cup of tea. Regardless, Coldplay is readying new music and you best be prepared so mash play and vibe out to their latest visual featuring trippy negative imagery.

Update (3/3): We now have confirmation that Coldplay is indeed releasing a sixth studio album called Ghost Stories and “Midnight” is a track plucked from it. However, it is not the official lead single; “Magic” has the honor of being that track and you can hear the soft tune after the break. Ghost Stories, out May 19, is available to preorder at iTunes today and a Target-exclusive physical CD will include three bonus tracks. The album cover and tracklist are also after the jump. Music Video Monday: Katy Perry, Eminem & Coldplay release their latest

Three music videos for you this week!

Kitty Purry Katy Perry stars in the video for her mega-hit single “Roar.” In this quite literal interpretation of the song, Perry transforms into queen of the jungle after surviving a plane crash. You can tell she had loads of fun putting this all together. It’s very cartoonish in nature–from her overreaction to a spider crawling up her arm to actual animated sequences–and if you’re a fan of the catchy track it’s pretty much guaranteed this vid will thoroughly entertain you. This lead single is off Perry’s upcoming album Prism due out October 21.

Music video: Coldplay – “Paradise”

Today Coldplay released a new music video for the track “Paradise,” the second single off their upcoming fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto. The sweeping anthem plays in the background as we watch a costumed man in an elephant suit journey around the world to find his bandmates. His method of transportation is a unicycle. I don’t want to give anything away, but Coldplay frontman Chris Martin makes unicycling look easy! Whoops. The vibrant clip was directed by Mat Whitecross, the same guy who helmed the music video for the previous single “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.”  Mylo Xyloto releases October 24.

Coldplay reveals new album title, artwork and release date

Finally! I was getting tired of referring to Coldplay’s upcoming fifth studio album as the “Coldplay concept album.” Today the soothing rock band announced via their website that the album is complete and it’s called Mylo Xyloto (pronounced MY-lo Zy-loto). When it releases October 24, it will be made available in digital, CD, and vinyl formats. The band has also put together a “special limited edition Pop-Up Album version” that will include  a 12″ x 12″ hardback book containing graffiti pop-up art designed by David A. Carter, vinyl, CD and exclusive content including photographs, excerpts from the studio diary and the band’s personal notebooks. A must-have for hardcore fans, you see. The album artwork (left) and the reversible cover art (right) lie above. Markus Dravs, Daniel Green, and Rik Simpson helped produce the album, and longtime collaborator Brian Eno provided “enoxification and additional composition.”

Though there’s still a little over two months left of anticipation, you can calm your nerves by listening to “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” and a live rendition of “Charlie Brown,” two tracks confirmed to be on the album. Also, Coldplay promises that “Paradise,” the next single off the album, is coming September 12.

Coldplay performs new song “Charlie Brown” at UCLA concert

Coldplay set up shop at UCLA last week and performed a myriad of their hit songs including “Fix You” and “Viva La Vida”, plus a tribute to Amy Winehouse. Among the 90-minute set were also a couple of new tracks from their upcoming fifth studio album: the previously released single “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” and a brand new one, “Charlie Brown.” The new track is a sweeping, atmospheric anthem that only Coldplay could do right. Watch the live performance above, and pop after the break for a bonus video. Continue reading Coldplay performs new song “Charlie Brown” at UCLA concert

Music video: Coldplay – “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin stars in this fast-paced, colorful and vibrant music video for their new single “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.” The stop-motion technique is used wonderfully here.
