The villains come out to play in new ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen footage from David Ayer’s supervillain film Suicide Squad. In fact, the only real footage we’ve been privy to up to this point has been the first-look teaser that Warner Bros. let loose shortly after debuting it to fans at San Diego Comic Con last summer. I’m happy to report that the wait has been so worth it.

Late Tuesday, the first official trailer for Suicide Squad hit the ‘Net and it’s a doozy. The whole team is showcased here in this two-and-half-minute clip: Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Slipknot (Adam Beach), and last but certainly not least The Joker (Jared Leto).

The first-look teaser was a relatively quiet affair, so if that didn’t get your blood pumping, official trailer #1 surely will. In a nutshell, Viola Davis’ character assembles a task force of the most dangerous people on the planet who she thinks “can do some good.” Set to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” this new snapshot of Suicide Squad is brimming with insane action sequences and undeniably fun character introductions. Whereas everybody’s amped to see how Leto embodies The Joker, I’ve got a gut feeling that Robbie is going to kill it as Harley Quinn. Who’s your favorite villain going into the movie?

Suicide Squad opens August 5. Skip after the break to eye the theatrical poster. Continue reading The villains come out to play in new ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer

Zack Snyder unveils his Aquaman for ‘Dawn of Justice’

Zack Snyder, slowly but surely, is rolling out to fans the line-up of superheroes from his upcoming DC Comics-based pic Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. So far, we’ve seen Henry Cavill as SupermanBen Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Next up, and pictured above, is Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman. He’s arguably the most underrated superhero–his super power is talking to fish. But Snyder is putting his signature twist on trident-wielding King of the Seven Seas; Momoa embodies a powerful, dark, and foreboding force here with tattoos galore.

Snyder shared the image with the world via Twitter. It says “unite the seven” and his tweet reads, “There is only one true King.” Speculate what you will, but there’s no denying that Snyder aims to elevate the DC universe to Marvel’s highly set cinematic bar when Dawn of Justice releases May 6, 2016.

  • “Justice League Part Two,” directed by Zack Snyder (2019)

In addition to announcing DC’s movie slate, Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara also revealed that his studio will be outputting three more LEGO movies–Ninjago in 2016, directed by Charlie Bean and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller; The LEGO Batman Movie in 2017, directed by Chris McKay; and The LEGO Movie 2 in 2018 (no word yet if Lord and Miller will return to direct the sequel to their 2014 box office hit). Also, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them will be told across three films directed by David Yates (he helmed the final four Potter movies).

Ben Affleck is Zack Snyder’s Batman in ‘Man of Steel’ sequel

At Comic Con Zack Snyder formally announced that a Man of Steel sequel is in the works and that it will pit Henry Cavill’s Superman against a new Batman. After completing Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Christian Bale publicly stated that he has laid the cape and cowl down to rest. So who would step into Bale’s shadow to become the next Bruce Wayne?

Ben Affleck.

Yes, the man who once played the super hero Daredevil in the widely dismissed 2003 flick about blind lawyer Matt Murdock and who even dressed up as Superman as actor George Reeves in 2006’s Hollywoodland, Ben Affleck is Batman. After losing his way in Daredevil and Gigli, Affleck turned his career around by becoming a filmmaker and directing critically acclaimed movies like The Town and Argo. He also happened to star in those movies and if you ask me he did a fine job all the way around. But the question remains: can he step into a super hero suit and make viewers forget his ill-fated turn as the blind red crusader? The Internet reacted quite negatively to the news, but I say let’s give him a shot. As long as Matt Damon is Robin.

Warner Bros’ press release reads: Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in Man of Steel.

Snyder notes, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

Also, we now have a date for the Man of Steel sequel: July 17, 2015.

Comic Con: Zack Snyder teases ‘Man of Steel’ sequel featuring Batman (!)

During the Warner Bros. panel at Comic Con, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder announced that another Superman movie is in the works, and most titillating, the Man of Steel sequel will reintroduce Batman into the mix. In a press release Snyder said, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”

At the panel Synder had actor Harry Lennox (who played General in Man of Steel) read an excerpt from the comic book The Dark Knight Returns: “I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in your most private moments, I want you to remember, my hand, at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you.” And then the logo formed on the giant screen behind him. Cue insane applause and cheers from the crowd. (Note: Snyder says the upcoming pic will not adapt that comic but will use it as a springboard to tell a new story.)

With Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy complete, Warner Bros. and Snyder’s crew are looking for a new Batman to step into the iconic role and join Cavill’s Superman “in one explosive new film.” I mean, the simple yet powerful logo hanging here says it all. This is going to be epic in ways it’s currently hard to imagine. Personally I’ve been holding out for a Batman versus Superman flick since the ’90s and now the pieces are finally in place. Snyder, bring it.

Synder is directing and co-writing the story with David S. Goyer. Production begins next year with a tentative Summer 2015 release. Official PR is after the break. Continue reading Comic Con: Zack Snyder teases ‘Man of Steel’ sequel featuring Batman (!)

FRINGE FRIDAY returns tonight at 9PM on FOX

The wait is finally over. Fringe begins its fourth season tonight on FOX. And the question on everybody’s mind is Where is Peter Bishop? Though showrunners J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner would never spoil that for fans, they did talk with the press recently to ramp up excitement for the new season. Here are some choice quotes for you to munch on before things get rolling at 9PM.

Wyman and Pinkner went back and forth reiterating the importance of Peter. Wyman: “Just because he [Peter] doesn’t exist doesn’t mean that those three years we’ve invested all didn’t happen. It did happen. And it will all unfold itself for you to understand what context I’m speaking.” Pinkner: “Look, Peter is part of the DNA of the show. We’ve done some pretty crazy things in the past where people were always like, ‘Well, wait a minute. Why are they doing that? What’s going on?’ Hopefully in season four, people will trust us enough to realize that we are doing things for a reason. To sort of have Fringe without Peter in some way, shape or form is really not Fringe…The show constantly tries to recontectualize your perception of this story…The idea that Peter is gone — and, ultimately, he’s not permanently gone — is an opportunity to recontectualize the story and what we’ve seen again. It’s something we love to play with.”

Wyman explained that the new season will tell a story about “how are these universes going to work together to heal their joint damage now that they have a means to do so…This offered us a good opportunity to…watch how the two Olivias are looking at problems very differently. It goes back to our major theme: Our experiences are who we are.” Standalone Fringe cases will take place in our universe, the alt-universe, and some will overlap in both universes over the course of the season.

The duo went on to give hints about else we can expect from the upcoming season.

  • Pinkner talked about now-series regular Seth Gabel, who plays Lincoln Lee. “We’re kind of in love with the theme of having this guy come in and have to go into a very strange world and [realize] that everything he thought was true is no longer valid. He’s going to have to put back together a psyche that has been sort of fractured by this knowledge that he really shouldn’t have.”  Added Wyman, “He brings us a certain thematic element that we really needed to tell this year. A lot of the things his character will be going through will help us tell our story. One of the themes we’re really interested in getting into this year is the impact we have on each other’s lives. We’re defined by the connections we make, and who we know, and who knows us, and how we define other people.”
  • “There will be returning faces,” Pinkner said. “We hate to spoil things, but there will be characters that you’ll be delighted to see again, hopefully some that you’ll be surprised to see again, and some you may have seen before that come back in a completely different context.”
  • The opening title sequence is a new color: orange! “The significance of the color is simply just to put out the notion that this is the universe without Peter in it.”  “It’s a different chapter,” added Wyman.
  • “Walternate, despite all promises to the contrary, is still a bad guy manipulating things behind the scenes. So that’s another story we’re going to be delving into,” said Wyman.
  • Hope you enjoyed season two’s “Brown Betty” musical and season three’s “LSD” animation trip because Wyman hints there’s another episode coming up “that’s off the beaten track.”
  • Get ready for some super freaky cases this year. Shares Wyman, “We have a slew of really crazy, hopefully thought-provoking, far-out cases that deal with time travel, out-of-control biology, and humans who either for very understandable and sometimes not so understandable reasons, are messing with the rules of nature and the rules of physics. This year…more than any other year, we have some mind-blowing standalone stories. Because ‘over there’ is so messed up, and over here is a little suspicious as well right now, it gives us carte blanche to push our imaginations to the hilt and see some really cool things realized.”

And there you have it. Fringe season four is ready to fire on all cylinders. Before it begins, take the time to watch FOX’s 12-part recap series “Past + Present + Future” on YouTube. Whether you’re new to the series or just want to brush up on everything Fringe, these collection of videos will take you on an exciting journey spanning all three seasons of the fantastic sci-fi series. Prepare for your mind to be blown.

Bonus! Look after the break to learn about the brand new DC Comic based on the show Beyond the Fringe.

Conan gets animated in faux trailer for ‘The Flaming C’

From the creators of Batman: The Animated Series and the Masturbating Bear comes THE FLAMING C, Conan O’Brien’s superhero alter ego! At Comic Con, Conan crashed the Warner Bros. panel for Green Lantern: The Animated Series to reveal his new trailer for The Flaming C, a movie that is coming to a theatre near you “sometime…maybe.” If you’ve been living under a rock for the past year (or if you’re just not an avid Conan viewer), hop after the break to watch the origin story behind red-haired, oven mitted superhero. In December Conan visited the home of DC Comics and animator Bruce Timm brought to life Conan’s vision of his very own superhero. Like everything Conan does, it’s a riot! Extended trailer: ‘The Green Lantern’

This weekend at Wondercon Warner Bros. unveiled a brand new trailer for the upcoming DC Comics flick The Green Lantern. At just over four minutes in length, the extended trailer gives us a grander glimpse into the Green Lantern Corps. home world of Oa. We witness the giant monster Parallax mortally wound Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), which leads to Sur’s quick escape to the closest inhabitable planet that is Earth where he crosses paths with Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). Jordan is given the ring and he recites the oath:

In brightest day,

In blackest night,

No evil shall escape my sight,

Let those who worship evil’s might,

Beware my power … Green Lantern’s light!

Mark Strong’s Sinestro and Peter Sarsgaard’s villainous Hector Hammond get some screen time here, though human co-star Blake Lively unfortunately does not. And the rest, as they say, lives on in the trailer above. Want to get your full screen HD 1080p action on? Head over to Apple trailers for your fix.

The Green Lantern opens June 17 in 3D.

Adrianne Palicki is Wonder Woman

Here is the very first image of Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) suited up as Wonder Woman. NBC wants to reboot the classic 1970s series and they’ve tapped David E. Kelley to write and executive produce it. Can the man with a TV degree in law (The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Public, Boston Legal, Harry’s Law) successfully bring back the DC Comics superheroine in a way that is relevant and exciting? Time will tell. But for now gaze at the wonderful image sitting above. Palicki certainly has the looks to play the part. But I’ll wait for a teaser before making any further judgement. Cary Elwes (Saw), Tracie Thoms (Cold Case), Pedro Pascal (The Good Wife), and Elizabeth Hurley are attached to the Warner Bros TV project.

Trailer: Green Lantern

Today Warner Bros. released the first full length trailer for Green Lantern, a Martin Campbell directed sci-fi extravaganza based on the DC Comic of the same name.  Ryan Reynolds is Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern, a test pilot who is granted a green ring that gives him awesome superpowers.  In addition to this fast action trailer, which includes just the right amount of aliens and superhero spankage, the studio released this synopsis:

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Green Lantern releases wide June 17, 2011.  Download the trailer in HD, courtesy of Apple.  And oh yeah, today Reynolds was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive.  Do what you will with that bit of information.

This is what Ryan Reynolds will look like as Green Lantern

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (set to hit newsstands July 16) features the very first image of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern on its cover.  The character looks pretty bad-ass to me.  And after proving he can kick some ass as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I have no doubt Van Wilder will impress as Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern.  Green Lantern, an upcoming sci-fi flick directed by Martin Campbell, is based on the DC Comic of the same name.  Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is granted a green ring that gives him awesome superpowers.  As one of many Green Lanterns, he is sworn to keep intergalactic order.  The movie also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, and Tim Robbins.  It’s expected to hit theatres June 17, 2011.
