‘Happy Endings’ comeback dreams crushed, for now

The cake is a lie. We should have known.

Remember when the Internet got all excited about a potential Happy Endings comeback? Well, it was one big April Fools prank. Series creator David Caspe confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the countdown clock teasing “a new day” was actually set up by a former Happy Endings writer or assistant without his knowledge as a simple gag. A gag that would take the ‘Net by storm and excite fans of the short-lived cult NBC sitcom. Caspe elaborated to EW:

“It took on a life of its own to the point that actually there was some interest in finding a place to do a few more episodes or an hourlong special. So then I couldn’t comment because I wasn’t allowed to say anything yet. But as we hit April 1, nothing has really panned out, and I don’t want to keep people hanging on, so I have to say something. Happy Endings remains cancelled for now. Hopefully one day we’ll be able to do an hourlong or a couple stand-alone episodes, and I’ve talked to the cast about even just doing a five-minute cold open. I want to apologize to anyone who is annoyed. It was just a writers’ room bit that kind of got away from them. I realized that this could piss off a lot of fans, and our hardcore fans and critics are all we’ve ever had…. But I also have to say that it was really awesome to see how much love there was for the show. We didn’t really think anyone was watching anymore. It was great to see that someone was.”

Perhaps the rather cruel joke was worth going through after all! Now that Caspe and co. sense the strength and furor of the series’ fanbase, maybe they can use this to pull the Happy team back for an actual reunion at some point.

“The cast wants to do it and the writers want to do it,” Caspe said. “It wouldn’t shock me if we did something. Never say never because something may pan out in the future.”

“Happy…April Fools’ Day! Sorry! All for fun. Caspe & Co had nothing to do with it. Thanks for being so hyper-passionate about the show.” That’s the tweet that was fired out on the first of the month from the Happy Endings writers Twitter account that started it all. Here’s to hoping our collective hyper-passion will indeed bring back our beloved comedy soon.

‘Happy Endings’ revival can happen, but will it?

Adam Pally departed The Mindy Project last week. Damon Wayans, Jr. announced he’ll be exiting New Girl (again) after the sitcom’s fourth season wraps this May. Eliza Coupe‘s USA comedy Benched got the axe after one season. Are you starting to recognize the pattern here?

Half of the main cast from the criminally underrated but highly lauded cancelled NBC sitcom Happy Endings is about to be available for a triumphant reprise. At least, that’s the idea that popped in my head when all this news made itself public in the eerily same window of time.

Now, Max, Brad, and Jane are crucial to a Happy Endings comeback, but there cannot be such a thing without the other half: I’m talking about Penny, Dave, and Alex, of course. So what are their portrayers up to? Casey Wilson currently stars in NBC’s Marry Me, a funny show you should be watching from Happy Endings creator (and Wilson’s husband) David Caspe. Zachary Knighton and Elisha Cuthbert are primed to star in Fox’s Weird Loners and NBC’s One Big Happy, respectively. (Fun fact, because why not: Cuthbert stars alongside Endings‘ alum Nick Zano in her new series.)

Where does this leave us? Well, if Marry Me continues to perform well creatively with the occasional uptick in the ratings department, it very may well be renewed for a second season; star Wilson and creator Caspe would then be attached to that. As for Knighton and Cuthbert, it’s too early to tell their availability status since their new series have yet to premiere (both are set to launch next month).

Enter the curveball the length of my wide-eyed smile. On Feb. 6, the Happy Endings writer’s Twitter account blasted out a cryptic tweet that takes you to a countdown portal with the words “It’s almost a new day” sprawled across the page. The timer will reach zero in 50 days from now. I’ll do the math for you: that’s April 1, aka April Fools Day. Are the writers hinting at series comeback? Their Twitter account currently follows Netflix, Amazon, and Yahoo! Screen–Internet streaming services known for resurrecting dead shows (see: Arrested DevelopmentCommunity). Or, more likely, are they teasing a one-off reunion of sorts that will bring back the cast for one final hurrah? OR, is this a heinous mind trick set to explode in tears of disappointment come April 1? I doubt that; the worst news, I suppose, is that the team is teasing a brand new series. And even that’s not bad news, per se, but it’s not a Happy Endings revival. The thing we are all now anticipating.

With that, let the wild speculation begin.

Update: Hope you’re keeping tabs on @HappyWrites. The Happy Endings writers are barraging followers with all kinds of tantalizing tweets involving hashtags like #ketchup and #wintercomestwice. Most exciting, though, is this video they shared; it’s Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and the video starts playing at the “Winter” section of the song. Not sure what the winter hooplah is all about but “Four Seasons”–get it?! If Endings were to make a comeback, a new season would be the series’ fourth! This is getting real, people. Or is it a hoax? The anticipation is killing me slowly.

‘Happy Endings’ officially cancelled, creator breaks silence on the oh-so-unfortunate news

It’s three seasons and out for ABC’s Happy Endings. After the network cancelled the critical darling and fan-favorite series, backing studio Sony TV made an effort to shop the the show elsewhere. Cable net USA passed on reviving it, and apparently so did the rest. On July 1 the cast’s options expired and now they are free to look elsewhere for work. But never again will they all team up as Jane, Alex, Dave, Max, Brad, and Penny and that’s the real shame here. (In a world where Arrested Development saw new life seven years after its premature cancellation, perhaps never say never?)

With my personal grieving out of the way, it’s time to hear from Happy Endings series creator David Caspe and executive producer Jonathan Groff. They recently broke their silence surrounding the show being axed and they shared their thoughts in an interview with TVLine.

On talks with bringing the show to USA: “It was as close as it could come without happening,” says Caspe. Darn!! Now it stings even more.

On potential season four storylines: “We knew we couldn’t do Dave and Penny until we got Dave and Alex sorted out,” Caspe shared. At the end of Season 3, they got the break-up that they really needed to have, which is one with an even playing field and nobody having left anyone at the altar. We wanted to have them break up in an amicable way so we could go back to telling Dave’s dating stories in a way that was more serious, or Alex dating and what that would mean for the group in a way that was more even-handed. Would Penny have been part of that? Maybe. I think we would have needed to regroup because Penny and Alex are so close and that relationship is so important and they’ve known each other their whole lives. [It’s similar to] the way it was tricky for Barney and Robin to hook up on How I Met Your Mother. It didn’t come without some degree of difficulty for Ted and Barney’s relationship. We would have had to handle that. And maybe we would have, I’m not sure.”

On the possibility of reviving the show in the future: “I would never say never to anything. We would always be open to talking about it. But the only way to move on is to move on. We have other stuff that we’ve gotta do. Who knows? I’m sure when they moved on from Arrested Development they never imagined that seven years later they would do it again. If you’re thinking that it’s gonna happen as a writer, you’re not focusing on the new stuff you have to work on. None of us would ever close the door, but I can’t really spend too much time hoping for that.”

USA decides not to pick up ‘Happy Endings’, sitcom stumbles into grave

This sucks. This is so sucky. Every now and then there’s a network series that is so incredibly raw and genuine and infectious that catches the attention of a small percentage of TV viewers and for that reason it gets the sharp axe. For some, life goes on; ABC’s Cougar Town and NBC’s Southland both found life after death in the cable arena on TBS and TNT, respectively. Even FOX’s Breaking In managed to come back from the dead and return to FOX, but that didn’t last long. And most recently there is Arrested Development, an irreverent show that got cancelled before its time telling stories up and seven years later it was resurrected on Netflix.

One causality to low ratings this season was the critically acclaimed Happy Endings, an ABC sitcom with an all-star cast and impeccable writing. Like Arrested before it, Endings comes out up with too many jokes to count and leaves it up to the viewer to sift through it all laughing all the while. It’s fast-paced, younger-skewing nature is probably what led to its demise; ABC president Paul Lee admitted it was “on brand” for the network but unfortunately wasn’t “broad” enough to warrant a fourth season. And so backing studio Sony TV began shopping it around to cable nets to find a new home for it. USA showed interest in possibly picking it up for another season, but Deadline reports those talks have shut down and the cable network ultimately decided to pass on it and invest in its own programs. Sony TV continues to shop it, but now it’s really starting to look like Happy Endings has come to the end of the road.

That’s such a shame, since its ensemble cast including Casey Wilson, Elisha Cuthbert, Eliza Coupe, Adam Pally, Zachary Knighton, and (who I considered to be the funniest man on TV this season) Damon Wayans Jr. make a wonderful, natural comedic team that are always in sync week after week. I guess all we can do now is be thankful that the show even managed to make it to three seasons despite bubble ratings along the way, just like we did with Arrested. Now hopefully it won’t take a network nearly a decade to realize just how funny and hip Happy Endings really is and produce at least another season.

TCA 13: ABC’s Paul Lee comments on a so-so fall, expresses excitement for Joss Whedon’s Marvel series ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Following NBC and FOX, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee took the stage at the TCA winter press tour to grade his network’s fall season and discuss the future. “We have a lot to shout about, and we also have a lot to do,” is how he kicked off the conversation.” He also said, “We were disappointed there weren’t any big breakout hits on broadcast, including ABC.” I guess he opted to ignore NBC’s Revolution when he went with that self-deprecating jab. He expressed concerns with cancelled dramas like Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue and the faltering Dancing with the Stars, but he also praised low-rated comedies Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and shared his excitement for Joss Whedon’s Marvel series S.H.I.E.L.D. For the full scoop see the bullet-point breakdown after the break.
