AT&T now offers iPhone 3GS for only $49.99 [Update: Apple, too]

The post title pretty much says it all.  AT&T, including brick and mortar stores and online, is now selling the iPhone 3GS for $49.99.  This offer applies to both new and upgrade-eligible existing AT&T customers.  Don’t have the cash to plunk down $199.99 for a beefier iPhone 4?  Now you totally have a viable way into the cellular-enabled iOS universe.  Full PR after the break.

Update: Apple’s gone ahead and matched AT&T’s low, low price of $49.99 for the 8GB iPhone 3GS.  I smell a new product release…is that you, Verizon iPhone?

Ustream finally gets the go-ahead for its Live Broadcasting app

Ustream has had its Viewing Application available for iPhone users to download for some time now.  Unfortunately, Apple restricted this app from allowing Ustream users to broadcast live video from it to other iPhone Ustreamers and to web browsers on PCs.  Today Apple has finally lifted this restriction and is allowing these capabilities to flourish on both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G (which, of course, do not have a video-supported camera).  The new Live Broadcaster Application allows users to stream live video from their iPhone over 3G or WiFi to other iPhones and to anyone with a browser directed to Ustream’s website.  Also, note that the application features a “local” record mode that seemingly allows iPhone 3G owners to record and store 320 x 240 video and upload it to YouTube, Facebook, etc.  In other words, it turns your iPhone 3G into a video camera–huzzah!  The app is available for free right now.

Note: I’ve tested the app and the live broadcast on the computer is very laggy.  If you happen to give it a try, share your experience with it in the comments below.

iPhone 3GS Hardware + iPhone 3.0 Software Out Now

As of June 17 and June 19, Apple released the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3.0 software update, respectively.  There are just a few differences between the older iPhone 3G and the new 3GS.  The 3GS has the following updates:  speed (about 2x faster), a 3.0 megapixel camera with video capability (with editing features), voice control (for contacts and music), and an internal compass.  The exterior of the phone is exactly the same (except for the updated “oilphobic” screen that repels finger smudges).  It comes in two models, 16GB ($199) and 32GB ($299), available in black and white.  The 3G sells for $99 now in a 8GB model (black), only.  Just make sure you are eligible for an upgrade if you really want one!

It is the iPhone 3.0 software update where most of the new changes can be found.  Some new features include: cut, copy, and paste, landscape keyboard for Mail, Messages, Notes, and Safari, MMS (sending pictures, audio, and contact info), Spotlight search (universal search of the phones contents from the home screen), voice memos, improved calender, an updated iTunes store (you can now purchase videos from TV and Movies; audiobooks), an enhanced Stocks app, stereo Bluetooth, and tethering (connecting your phone to a computer providing you internet on the go).  The MMS and tethering features will not be available until late summer due to AT&T sucking big time.  The 3.0 update is available to download in iTunes right now, free for iPhone, 3G, and 3GS users; $9.99 for iPod touch users.
