So many trailers, so let’s get right to it. First up is our very first look at the final installment of director Todd Phillips’ Hangover trilogy. The Hangover Part III brings back Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis as the three best friends that anyone could have and they’re going back to Vegas where it all began. The overall plot is still being kept under wraps and this teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much except that Alan’s dad played by Jeffrey Tambor passes away and John Goodman shoots someone in cold blood in front of the guys. The official terse synopsis goes like this: “This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.” A laugh-out-loud teaser and the promise that this one won’t mimic the wedding/get drunk and blackout/wake up and remember nothing formula from the first two films should have you extra excited for the Wolfpack’s last hurrah. The Hangover Part III opens May 24. Super Bowl XLVII: the not quite record ratings and the commercials

Power outage and all, Super Bowl XLVII proved to be an exciting game after all. Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens dominated the game early on and the San Fransisco 49ers used the approximately 35 minutes of dark downtime to reenergize and make an unexpected comeback that nearly ended the game in their favor. When the fourth quarter came to a close, however, it was the domineering Ravens and MVP Flacco on top besting the 49ers 34 to 31.

Unlike previous years, last night’s Super Bowl did not break ratings records to become the most watched telecast in history. 108.41 million people tuned into the big game making it the third most watched TV program behind Super Bowl XLVI (111.3 million) and Super Bowl XLV (111 million). (And if you’re curious, the hyped post-Super Bowl episode of Elementary attracted 20.8 million viewers with a 7.8 rating in the 18-49 demo. These numbers are huge for the CBS freshman procedural, but they do not match the 37.6 million viewers that tuned into The Voice‘s post-game telecast last year.) Maybe we’ll see another record-breaking explosion in eyeballs next year?

Moving onto the ‘mericals. This year companies had to fork over a whopping four million dollars for a 30-second spot. I’ve posted a bunch of my personal favorites after the break, including those from Volkswagon, Oreos, Doritos, and Taco Bell and trailers for anticipated movies like Iron Man 3 (see the extended cut!), Star Trek, and Fast and Furious 6. Movie trailer round-up: ‘Oblivion’, ‘Pacific Rim’, ‘After Earth’, ‘Man of Steel’, ‘The Lone Ranger’ & ‘Iron Man 3’

First up is Oblivion, the next movie in Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s arsenal. It’s superbly sci-fi and with stars Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, and Melissa Leo at the forefront, it’s shaping up to be an exciting must-see event.

Here’s all we get in a synopsis: “On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.” For more, sit back and mash play.

Update (10/23): As promised, Marvel has let loose the first full-length official trailer for Iron Man 3 today and it is mind-numbingly phenomenal. Tony Stark is having nightmares following the events “in New York” (aka The Avengers), Pepper Potts is in trouble, and at last we are formally introduced to Stark’s latest nemesis Mandarin (portrayed by Ben Kingsley) who believes there is no such thing as heroes. Voice overs from Iron Man and Mandarin, as well as crazy explosions and an epic score make this one exciting trailer that will surely induce a nerdgasm of intense proportions.

Previously: Today Marvel unleashed a trailer teaser (not even considered a teaser trailer) for Iron Man 3. The first real trailer is coming Tuesday, October 23, but the powers that be thought it’d be fun to tease the lengthier first look with this extremely brief, 17-second clip. Glean what you can from it, and then read the official synopsis below. Check back here on Tuesday for the upcoming trailer.

Comic Con 2012: Marvel dates new ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’ movies, announces ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Ant-Man’

The Marvel panel at Comic Con made some major announcements concerning its upcoming movie projects. The next slate of movies set in the Marvel Comics universe is being referred to as “Phase Two.” Without further ado…

Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), is out May 3, 2013.

Thor: The Dark World, directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), is out November 8, 2013.

Captain America: The Winter Solider is out April 4, 2014.

Guardians of the Galaxy is out August 1, 2014.

Ant-Man, directed by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) does not have a release date yet.

There’s the “Phase Two” lineup. At the panel, footage from Black’s Iron Man 3 rallied fans with the introduction of Tony Stark’s new nanobot technology that allows him to remotely suit up and a first look at the movie’s villain Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley. For Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel detailed the five superheros who make up this new (potential franchise-worthy) team and they are Drax The Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Racoon, and Gamora; see them all depicted above. What will likely connect this team to the one we already know (read: The Avengers) is that it is Drax’s ultimate mission to defeat Thanos, the yellowish grinning alien seen in the post-credits scene during The Avengers. For Ant-Man, Wright showed off test footage of the superhero who can grow extremely tiny and immensely large at will. Wright exclaimed, “Ant-Man will kick you ass one inch at a time.”

First look: Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Iron Man 3’

Here is the first still from the set of Iron Man 3. The Marvel movie broke ground on June 4 in Wilmington, North Carolina and the production schedule plans to bring the cast and crew to far out places like Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Miami, Florida, and China. Robert Downey Jr. returns as the armored superhero (see his back to us above). Also confirmed to appear in the movie are Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. Favreau, while still remaining an executive producer, is not directing the third installment; Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) has taken over the reins.

Gaze at Tony Stark gazing over his collection of sweet suits, and start anticipating the return of Iron Man. The genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist is back May 3, 2013.

Jon Favreau steps away from Iron Man franchise

Sources confirm that Jon Favreau will not direct Iron Man 3.  But why?  Vulture broke the news and they speculate: A) Creative differences: Favreau is “frustrated with Marvel’s urge to stuff more of their in-house heroes into the next film in the wake of The Avengers.”  B) Financial reasons: Favreau is said to have made $10 million for the Iron Man 2 and a hefty raise would likely be necessary to keep him on board.  C) A mix of both A & B.  Vulture goes on to say that a source close to “Marvel’s playbook” think that “the company had been pushing a confusing and packed vision of the third film as a tactic to provoke Favreau into leaving the project.”  Whatever the reason, Favreau is out and apparently he left the team under amicable terms.  Shortly after this news hit the web he tweeted, “It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.”  Marvel is currently in the process of finding a new helmer, and it’s worthy to note that star Robert Downey Jr. has contractual approval over the director of the film so he’ll have a hand in the decision.  Iron Man 3 is still on track for a May 3, 2013.  Favreau is putting the final touches on Cowboys and Aliens and he’s still signed on as a producer for The Avengers.

‘Iron Man 3’ gets a 2013 release date, Disney will distribute the film

Comic book fans and movie-goers, mark down your calendars.  Iron Man 3 will hit theatres May 3, 2013.  Let the countdown begin, right?

In related news, Disney, Paramount Pictures, and Marvel Studios announced in a joint press release that Disney will handle the worldwide marketing and distribution rights for The Avengers and Iron Man 3.  Under the new deal, Disney will pay Paramount $115 million for the transfer of the distribution rights to the two upcoming Marvel movies.  Paramount will remain the worldwide distributor of Thor and Captain America, and the first two Iron Man films.

Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures: “Five years ago, when Paramount and Marvel made our initial deal, both our businesses were in very different places,” said Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures. “We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the terrific Marvel team over these years and proud of the work we have done together. Today, this new agreement is the right deal for Paramount, for Marvel and for Disney. We look forward to working together on Thor and Captain America, and we wish Disney and Marvel the utmost success, in what we know will be a very productive and wide-ranging partnership.”

Reminder: Thor releases May 6, 2011, followed by a July 22, 2011 Captain America theatrical release.  The Avengers is due out in 2012.
