AMC greenlights a ‘Walking Dead’ companion series with Robert Kirkman at the helm

Shortly after announcing a spinoff series from the land of Breaking Bad in the tentatively titled Better Call Saul, AMC is more than kicking around the idea of launching a new series set in the post-apocalyptic world of their other hugely successful show The Walking Dead. The cabler is calling it a “companion series” and Walking Dead executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert are all on board with it. Essentially the new series will take place in the world that Kirkman created in the comics, but it won’t be shackled to his story since it will follow a completely different group of people surviving the zombie apocalypse. The following statements paint a clearer picture for what’s in mind.

Kirkman: “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

AMC president Charlie Collier: “Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer. We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Seems like a fun idea to me. Can you imagine if storylines intertwined and all of a sudden you saw Rick’s camp interfere with the people in the spinoff. It’s not so far-fetched since the same creative minds are in control of both series. We shall wait and see.

The Walking Dead spinoff won’t air until 2015, so for now you can look forward to the return of the flagship series on October 13.

‘The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman developing heist drama for AMC

The ratings boon that is AMC’s The Walking Dead isn’t enough for Robert Kirkman, the comic book writer and executive producer behind the zombie hit. He is preparing to bring a new series to the network based on another one of his graphic novels called Thief of Thieves. Per Deadline, this new comic “centers on master thief Conrad Paulson who, while attempting to reconcile with his estranged wife and son, vows to walk the straight and narrow, only to discover he’s completely addicted to the thrill of stealing. Now he must feed his addiction by stealing only what has been stolen, as the “Thief of Thieves.”

Says Kirkman: “Much like The Walking Dead brought horror to television in a unique and groundbreaking way, I feel Thief of Thieves can do the same thing for heist stories, showing the humanity of all the characters, including the criminals.” Unlike The Walking Dead, Theif of Thieves is “going to be very grounded in the real world,” Kirkman spilled to EW. “No zombies, no space aliens, no superheroes. It’s just going to be real human characters doing somewhat horrible things to each other.”

Kirkman will executive produce alongside fellow Walking Dead collaborators Charles Eglee (The Shield, Dexter) and David Alpert. If AMC picks up the show, Eglee will also serve as showrunner. More as this story develops.

Showrunners Robert Kirkman & Frank Darabont talk up AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ (first BTS video!)

Having followed the initial murmurs of the new AMC zombie program based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book of the same name, it’s very exciting to see the first behind-the-scenes video footage of  The Walking Dead coming together.  The show follows a group of survivors who are forced to deal with the aftermath of a devastating zombie apocalypse.  Kirkman serves as executive producer.  In the video above he gushes about how swimmingly the show is assembling as the season premiere looms in the near distance (this October).  Writer/director/exec producer Frank Darabont is also having a blast making this show.  “We’re going to following the Robert Kirkman narrative pretty closely,” Darabont reveals.  “We’re giving ourselves permission to veer off the path and find the interesting detours.”  So far, Kirkman has had no problem with Darabont’s methods.  We’ve seen production stills from the set, but there’s nothing like seeing these zombies in action.  And man do they look scary as hell.  But we should expect nothing less from makeup/special FX lead Greg Nicotero.  This show hasn’t even started yet and I’m hooked.  And that’s why I got so excited when I heard Darabont utter these words: “I’d like to do twenty years of zombie TV.”

A zombie from AMC’s “The Walking Dead” [Update]

The Walking Dead Picture

Look what we have here!  It’s a makeup test photo from AMC’s “The Walking Dead“, a new TV series based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book that shares the same name.  The upcoming series stars Andrew Lincoln as protagonist Rick Grimes, Sarah Waynes Callies as his wife Lori Grimes, and Jon Bernthal as Grimes’ partner.  Together they will lead a resistance in the fight against a zombie-dominated world.  “The Walking Dead” begins this October on AMC.  That is one good looking zombie, if I may be so bold.

Update: Quint from Aint It Cool News sat down with The Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman to talk about the upcoming AMC series.  Look after the break for some worthy takeaways. Continue reading A zombie from AMC’s “The Walking Dead” [Update]
