Stephen Colbert to succeed David Letterman in 2015

The late-night talk show scene is ongoing a major makeover. Shortly after Jimmy Fallon took over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno and Seth Meyers occupied Fallon’s vacant Late Night seat, it was announced this week that Stephen Colbert is going to be David Letterman’s successor when the longstanding Late Show host retires in 2015. It has been confirmed that the Comedy Central host of the politically-bent Cobert Report will not be bringing over his conservative pundit character to the Late Show but instead will play himself (can’t wait to see what that will look like). Unfortunately for Report fans, when the transition happens that show will be no more. Here are some choice quotes from those parties involved:

Colbert: “Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”

Letterman: “Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him, and I’m flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses.”

CBS CEO Les Moonves: “Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television. David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”

CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler: “Stephen is a multi-talented and respected host, writer, producer, satirist and comedian who blazes a trail of thought-provoking conversation, humor and innovation with everything he touches. He is a presence on every stage, with interests and notable accomplishments across a wide spectrum of entertainment, politics, publishing and music. We welcome Stephen to CBS with great pride and excitement, and look forward to introducing him to our network television viewers in late night.”

Stephen Colbert gets Daft Punk’d, performs his star-studded rendition of “Get Lucky”

This is too damn good so I’ll be brief. Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report had been hyping Daft Punk’s first live performance since their latest album Random Access Memories on his show. But then the French electronic duo cancelled their visit to the Report at the last minute due to contractual obligations with CC’s sister network MTV (they are both owned by media conglomerate Viacom). In a fit of anger and some booze, Colbert spilled to his audience what has supposed to be a surprise for VMA viewers: Daft Punk is scheduled to perform live at the MTV Video Music Awards later this month. It was the Report or the VMAs and Daft Punk chose the latter and legalese with MTV made it impossible for the artists to perform on Colbert’s stage, too.

Now that you have the story down pat, watch Colbert tell his side of the story in his entertaining way in the clip embedded above. And then, after the break, watch the host perform his very own rendition of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” with many, many surprise guests. It truly is a riot. Perhaps Daft Punk’s absence was a godsend because I doubt their live version of “Get Lucky” could ever best what Colbert put together here. Stewart & Colbert extend contracts with Comedy Central

Jon Stewart of The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report aren’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future.  Both political satirists have extended their contracts with Comedy Central, making the network their home for at least the next few years.  Stewart, who became the host of The Daily Show in 1999, will stick with it at least until June 2013 and Cobert will man his position through 2012.  Staying with cable instead of jumping to the big networks makes sense for the dynamic duo; the cable environment allows for more creative freedom and less restriction on lambasting politicians and celebrities alike.  Something Conan is fervently looking forward to, I’m sure of it.

Colbert hosts Dean Kamen and his advanced prosthetic arm

Dean Kamen is known to many as the inventor of the failed Segway transportation vehicle.  But now he’s clearly moved on to bigger and better things.  In conjunction with the Defense Department and DARPA, Kamen’s been developing an advanced prosthetic arm internally called “Luke” (named after Luke Skywalker).  Luke is being made specifically for injured U.S. troops who tragically lose their arms in battle.  It is by for the most impressive prosthetic I’ve ever seen in practical use.  See for yourself in the video above.

Colbert gets his liftoff

After receiving the most votes at NASA’s website, actor Stephen Colbert won the contest to put his last name on the next ISS module to launch into space.  After deeming the situation inappropriate, NASA decided to name the module “Tranquility” and gave Colbert a consolation prize.  After all, he did give the International Space Station a boost in popularity on his show “The Colbert Report.”  His prize?  NASA came up with this acronym: C.O.L.B.E.R.T. is the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill.  Better than nothing, I guess.  Check out his response video above.

Jeff Goldblum is alive and well

Contrary to what people have tweeted, actor Jeff Goldblum is still breathing.  Shortly after MJ passed away, the Twitterverse rapidly spread what is now a comical rumor that Goldblum had passed away on the set of a film in New Zealand.  He did not die and he is currently in Los Angeles.  Mr. Stephen Colbert tackles this rumor head on with a special guest (wonder who that may be?).
