Valentine’s Day treat: Learn the truth behind “The Women of LA”

Posted in Hilarity,Video by Scott Meisner on February 13th, 2013

Here’s a brand new video that’s gone viral and rightfully so. It’s laugh-out-loud funny…because it’s true. Friends DJ Lubel & J. Abrams collaborated on this catchy clip that journeys the streets of Los Angeles and makes the ultimate point that the women of LA make it impossible to get with them. If you live there the on-location segments are a real treat but even if you’ve never been you’ll take pleasure in this genius concept that’s littered with fun celebrity cameos.

To all the lovers out there who just can’t get some, Happy Valentine’s Day. Now move back to NYC.

‘Toy Story’ gets a live-action, shot-for-shot treatment that was made to impress

Posted in Entertainment,Movies,Video by Scott Meisner on January 15th, 2013

You know that saying? If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. Well, here’s proof. Jesse Perrotta, 21, and Jonason Pauley, 19, created a live-action, shot-for-shot remake of the original Toy Story. After two years of hard work with real toys, marionette strings and wires and stop-motion skill, the boys uploaded to YouTube an 80 minute recreation of the classic Pixar animated film. To add authenticity they incorporated Randy Newman’s unforgettable soundtrack and they edited in the characters’ real voices from the movie.

If you don’t have an hour and twenty minutes to take it all in, you can still appreciate their inspired effort by scrubbing around the clip that has amassed over 3.6 million views since hitting the ‘Net just three days ago. The Toy Story junkies brought a DVD copy of their movie to Pixar and although the company hasn’t offered any official comments, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich tweeted a link to the video and called the creators “VERY dedicated guys.”

Take a trip down memory lane and watch in awe as Toy Story comes to (real) life.

“Gangnam Style” reaches one billion views on YouTube

Posted in Entertainment,News by Scott Meisner on December 21st, 2012

Is it a sign of the end of times? Maybe, maybe not. This just in: K-Pop star PSY’s “Gangnam Style” music video has generated one billion views on YouTube. That’s an incredible feat, no matter how you look at it. According to Google the clip’s been seen at least one million times in close to 75 countries, so to say it’s a worldwide sensation is quite the understatement. Recently it surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” music video to become the most watched video of all time on Google’s video site, and it is here where it will likely remain king for some time.

Viral marketing campaign begins for Guillermo Del Toro’s monsters vs. robots epic ‘Pacific Rim’

Posted in Movies,News,Video by Scott Meisner on November 30th, 2012

Guillermo Del Toro (HellboyPan’s Labyrinth) is working on a modern monster movie called Pacific Rim. It was unveiled and previewed at this year’s Comic Con to a raging audience. It’s a sci-fi epic to look forward to. Instead of construing words, learn what it’s about directly from the source, helmer Del Toro. In a 2011 interview with Wired he said:

“It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters. We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea.”

Want more? Here’s the official synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

To promote the film’s summer release, a viral marketing campaign has begun in the form of a shaky-cam clip uploaded to YouTube called “BREAKING NEWS: KAIJU ATTACK.” It’s embedded above and it gives viewers a glimpse of the monstrous creatures Del Toro has imagined for Pacific Rim. It comes off as very Cloverfield, but be mindful that the picture will not be presented in shaky-cam format. Interested in following the viral madness? Bookmark the movie’s official site where you’ll find a gallery of concept art and blueprints for the “Jaeger” robotic machines and more glimpses at the Kaiju.

Pacific Rim, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr., Max Martini, Rinko Kikuchi, and Robert Kazinsky, is out July 12. The first theatrical trailer is expected to drop December 12.

“Gangnam Style” becomes most-viewed video of all time on YouTube

Posted in Music,News by Scott Meisner on November 30th, 2012

On November 24, ”Gangnam Style” became the most-viewed video on YouTube. On that day its view count reached 805 million. Today its nearly captured 855 million looks. The South Korean rapper PSY managed to dethrone “pop sensation” Justin Bieber’s “Baby” music video, the previous record holder for most-viewed video. And as catchy, fun, agonizing or annoying you find “Gangnam Style” to be, PSY deserves at least some respect for knocking the Biebs down a peg, am I right? According to YouTube Trends, however, Justin’s 2010 single still receives between 350k and 500k views per day. But that pales in comparison to the new record holder; the song that’ll get you singing Heyyy, sexy lady is being watched 7 to 10 million times a day.

Be a part of history and add one to the tally. Bieber’s in the dust! For now…

The Internet mocks the Presidential debate as the election nears

Posted in Hilarity,Video by Scott Meisner on November 5th, 2012

Election day is almost here (it’s tomorrow!) and only the Internet can remind you to vote with a “bad lipreading” of this season’s first Presidential debate. Though it won’t educate you on the two candidates positions, it will calm your nerves before heading to the voting booths. Obama, Romney, and of course moderator Jim Lehrer spew all kinds of wackiness in the parody but it is all done so well that you are forced to find the funny in it.

On a serious note, this serves as a reminder to vote. Need assistance finding a voting location? Google is here to help. See you on the other side!

Going viral: ‘Breaking Bad’ musical parody featuring Walt & company channeling their inner Taylor Swift

Posted in Hilarity,Music,Television,Video by Scott Meisner on October 21st, 2012

Video contains spoilers from the show.

The Internet has produced one of the most ridiculous videos I have ever seen. I’m sharing it with you, though, because it is just the right amount of entertaining for long-time followers of the critically acclaimed AMC drama Breaking Bad. YouTube channel Teddie Films has concocted a viral hit with “We Are Never Ever Gonna Cook Together,” a mashup of Breaking Bad and Taylor Swift’s new breakup single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” The clip does a good job of musically summing up the tension between Walt and Jesse that occurs in season five, and it really scores with the absurd imitations of characters like DEA agent Hank Schrader, Walt Jr., and there’s even a guy in a chicken suit representing fast food chain Los Pollos Hermanos. What takes away from this almost-solid parody are giant inconsistencies like Jesse being Asian and Skylar’s portrayer wearing an obvious wig. Things like these add to the farcical nature of the video, but I feel that it really would have exploded with fans if they were more detail-oriented. Nitpicking aside, you should definitely have a watch if you like the show. Fair warning: Swift’s song is catchy to begin with; mashed with Breaking Bad don’t surprised if you catch yourself singing “Oooo ohhh Heisenberg” throughout the day.

You’re gonna kill me; the track is available for keeps through iTunes. Peace.

Gotye remarkably remixes his song “Somebody I Used To Know” using YouTube clips

Posted in Music,Video by Scott Meisner on August 20th, 2012

Yes, I’m sick of this song as well. Radio stations overplay it and that’s twisted it into a painfully catchy tune you never want to hear again but even if you did you’d probably let it play all the way through before screaming at yourself.

That said, give it one more listen because this rendition is fascinating. No really, do it. Wally De Backer (aka Gotye) took it upon himself to scour YouTube for so many covers of his popular Making Mirrors track “Somebody I Used To Know” and then remix them all together to make what he calls “Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra.” The result, as aforementioned, is fascinating and well worth a listen.

Wally tagged the almost six minute clip with this: “Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of “Somebody That I Used To Know” seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn’t resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered.

”

Enjoy the collective effort.

New ‘Prometheus’ viral video introduces Michael Fassbender’s David the robot

Posted in Movies,Video by Scott Meisner on April 20th, 2012

So I guess Ridley Scott didn’t mind letting this cat out of the bag before unleashing his pseudo-Alien prequel Prometheus unto the world. Turns out Michael Fassbender’s character David is a robot! Specifically, he’s an android built by Weyland Industries that’s headed by Guy Pearce’s character Peter Weyland. Is it Weyland’s plan to “change the world” by inventing “technological, intellectual, physical, and emotional” sentient beings? That is still being kept under wraps, as are major plot details of the highly anticipated sci-fi action movie. In the video embedded above you’ll meet David; it’s his birthday so be kind.

Prometheus is out June 8.

Jedis, ninjas, and Sith lords, oh my!

Posted in EXPERIENCE,Video by Scott Meisner on December 31st, 2011

Check out this kick-ass viral video starring Team 2X, a collective group of professional martial arts performers. Watch as a lone Jedi takes on a hoard of ninjas and a vengeful Sith Lord. Stay for the end–it’s unexpected and absurdly humorous.

Jedi Ninjas was developed as a passion project to recreate the current style of Star Wars action seen in video games into live action. This style often combines elements of Force powers with the use lightsaber combat. As there are no upcoming live action Star Wars movies to this date, this was a project to make many of the fans’ dreams into a reality.

Short film: ‘Address Is Approximate’ (using stop-motion & Google Street View)

Posted in Short film,Video by Scott Meisner on December 4th, 2011

A lonely desk toy longs for escape from the dark confines of the office, so he takes a cross country road trip to the Pacific Coast in the only way he can – using a toy car and Google Maps Street View.

Address Is Approximate is produced by director Tom Jenkins of London-based commercial production company The Theory. The stop-motion animation short, shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, quickly went viral and has garnered over 1.8 million views in fifteen days. The story it tells is so simple yet unbelievably captivating. And the idea of taking inanimate objects for a “drive” cross country in front of a computer monitor using Google Maps is utterly ingenious. In case you’re wondering, the soothing track that plays throughout is “Arrival of the Birds” by The Cinematic Orchestra.

The clip was a pet project for Jenkins who was recently signed to the talent agency WME with his partner Simon Sharp. Hopefully this means that we can expect more from Jenkins in the future, perhaps on the feature side of things.

YouTube musician Kina Grannis has fun with jelly beans in new stop-motion music video

Posted in Music,Video by Scott Meisner on November 6th, 2011

Have you ever heard of jelly bean art? Well it exists. And now so does a jelly bean music video. YouTube star Kina Grannis wrote a song called “In Your Arms” and developed a music video with director Greg Jardin involving 288,000 jelly beans. The insanely impressive stop-motion video, which includes a total of 2,460 individual frames, took 22 months (1,357 hours) to complete. Sure the song is catchy and Grannis has an infectious charm about her, but it’s the sheer level of dedication put into this music video that has elevated to viral status. In under a week it has amassed about 1.5 million well deserved views. After you wipe the saliva off your mouth when the video ends (and that’s either because you’re so impressed or you’re craving Jelly Belly jelly beans, or both) make sure you jump after the break to watch a seven minute making-of video that shows just how much hard work and patience was required to make the music video a reality. With “In Your Arms” Grannis has proved she’s a creative force to be reckoned with, and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next. (Click here for more…)

Actor Miles Fisher creates fun, gory musical to promote ‘Final Destination 5′

Posted in Hilarity,Movies,Music,Video by Scott Meisner on September 5th, 2011

Miles Fisher landed the lead role in the fifth installment of the Final Destination franchise, and to celebrate he wrote a catchy song called “New Romance” and starred in the parody video that’s embedded above. Fisher approached FD5 studio backer Warner Bros. with the idea and they decided to fund it. It’s really fun to describe: Fisher has imagined a colorful world that melds high school teenie boppers and well groomed guys with over-the-top death sequences in the style of Saved By The Bell. Watch it now, it’s a bloody good time.

And this isn’t the first time Fisher has made a parody; check out Pinkberry 3D!

Bloodthirsty kids deal fake drugs in this spectacularly animated music video

Posted in Music,Video by Scott Meisner on June 16th, 2011

You may not have heard of London-based pop group Is Tropical, but I guarantee you will get a kick out of their music video for their latest single “The Greeks.” Directed by Megaforce (the man behind the trippy Cudder clip “Pursuit of Happiness“), the video follows a bunch of bloodthirsty kids who indulge themselves in murdering each other in the most spectacularly disturbing of ways. The cartoonish animation is provided by Seven and it helps spin the rather graphic nature of the music video into an enjoyable visual feast.

The band describes the video like this: “Part Rumblefish, part Die Hard, part Akira, we wanted to work together to create something both visually appealing and aesthetically relevant to the band. We like kids, we like gangs, we really like daydreaming and imagination; the video straddles the line between nostalgia and the visual death-porn of our generation – the action film. Don’t get carried away by politics – this is a straight-up kid brawl the way it played out in your head when you were stealing your mums mascara to be like Arnie in Predator. It isn’t a shocking rebuke to our drama queen, populist news culture either – just naive, blissful shoot-yr-mate until he’s definitely dead war-games – the way you wish it still could be.”

Sure the video is great and all, but do you also like what you hear? The single “The Greeks” is available to download for free right here, and Is Tropical’s debut album Is Native is out now in the UK.

Super 8 in theatres now, get a glimpse of the creature here

Posted in Movies,Video by Scott Meisner on June 12th, 2011

The J.J. Abrams / Steven Spielberg production Super 8 is in theatres now. Leading up to the film’s release, Paramount has been adding snippets of video to this official website. On June 9, one day before the film hit theatres nationwide, the studio brought it all together and the final black-and-white video sits above. The “Full Editing Room Film” gives those anticipating Super 8 a small glimpse into the mystery behind the creature that lands in the small Ohio town the movie takes place in. If you’ve seen the movie already, you’d know that bits of this video are included in a pivotal scene.

I attended a midnight premiere screening of the movie, and without giving anyway away I will say this: Super 8 is a perfect summer movie filled with action and healthy doses of emotion & sci-fi. All of the kid actors nailed it, especially the young lead Joel Courtney. It’s truly a must-see. Whether or not it is a veiled Cloverfield prequel remains to be determined; I’d like to think it is. Also, beware of so much lens flares–alas, it is the Abrams touch (see Star Trek).

YouTube sensation KarminMusic covers Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now”

This little video’s gone viral and after you mash play you’ll no longer wonder why. Musical duo KarminMusic–comprised of Nick the keyboardist and Amy the vocalist–have produced an outstanding cover of Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now,” a track I never really enjoyed until I watched this. Girl’s got game, yo.
