First look: ‘The Newsroom’ season 2
You have been waiting oh-so-patiently for your next Will McAvoy fix so here it is, your first look at The Newsroom 2.0 season 2. Creator/executive producer Aaron Sorkin invites you to the set of his cables news network show and properly teases what’s in store. “The second season of The Newsroom has a different structure than the first season did; there’s one story that goes through the entire season,” he says. There’s a wrongful termination suit at hand and an important deposition the characters must participate in. Elsewhere at Atlantic Cable News, Jim goes into the field to cover the Romney campaign, Neal latches onto the Occupy movement, and Maggie “episode by episode is going to lose everything,” spins Sorkin. And of course, the complicated relationship between Will and MacKenzie will continued to be explored.
If you haven’t caught up on The Newsroom yet, do it now before the show resumes this summer. But like Sorkin says, most won’t have a problem diving right into it even if you haven’t screen the first season’s ten episodes. The Newsroom returns July 14 at 10PM on HBO.
‘The IT Crowd’ is set to return for a TV special
He teased it in 2011 and now he’s confirming it: creator Graham Linehan is prepared to bring back the quirky and beloved British sitcom The IT Crowd for one last hurrah.
Back in ’11 he struck down a fifth series admitting, “I felt that the last series was a nice strong point to go out on, and anything further might just be running on the spot. You don’t do your best work when you’re running on the spot.” However he didn’t rule out an eventual revisiting of basement dwellers Roy (Chris O’Dowd), Moss (Richard Ayoade), and Jen (Katherine Parkinson). He teased an extended TV special with “a big juicy story with great storylines for all the characters.”
Fast forward to today and the IT Crowd special is on track to get made and rumored to bring back the core cast including the aforementioned trio plus Matt Berry. With O’Dowd’s career blowing up after starring in Bridesmaids in 2011 and Ayoade finding fame in 2012’s The Watch, the stars simply didn’t have the time for even a brief reunion. But now, apparently, schedules are freed up and the time is now to produce a forty minute special to wrap up the cult comedy. When an air date is announced, you’ll know.

‘Arrested Development’ ad campaign is a must-see for fans (plus: new clip inside!)
It’s officially May which means we can now say this: Arrested Development returns this month! In anticipation of the return of the short-lived cult comedy, Netflix is going all out with an attractive ad campaign featuring images and taglines that evoke some of the most memorable bits from the series’ original run. You can sort through it all below; gallery #1 includes some laugh-out-loud promo posters while gallery #2 contains character portraits. Also, the storage container has sprung open (see above!).
Once you’re done there, you’re going to want to hop after the break to watch a BRAND NEW CLIP starring the dynamic duo Buster and his overbearing mother Lucille.

TV renewals: ‘Bates Motel’, ‘Revolution’, ‘Glee’ and others coming back next season
On April 8, A&E renewed Bates Motel for a second season. Same order as before–10 new episodes will premiere in 2014.
A&E president Bob DeBitetto: “Bates Motel has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal audience in its first few weeks. With superb writing and exceptional acting, led by the critically acclaimed performances of Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, we’re incredibly excited to see where Carlton and Kerry take Norma and Norman Bates next.”
On April 26, NBC renewed five dramas including freshmen Revolution and Chicago Fire, Law & Order: SVU (for a fifteenth season), Parenthood (for a fifth season), and Grimm (for a third season).
NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke: “On the verge of our 2013 fall scheduling decisions, we’re pleased to renew five drama series that will be important to our new season line-up. We’re proud and very appreciative of all of the actors, producers, writers and directors who work so hard to deliver such high-quality work week in and week out. ‘Apartment 23’, ‘Zero Hour’, ‘666 Park Avenue’ & ”Do No Harm’ are coming back from the grave to wrap their seasons
As they say, good things come to those who wait. If you tuned into cancelled shows like Zero Hour and Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 this season, you are getting the opportunity to get hooked once more.
Let’s start with the alphabet network. Starting May 17, Apt 23 fans can watch the remaining eight episodes from the sitcom’s second season via ABC.com, Hulu, and iTunes. Conspiracy thriller Zero Hour is due to return Saturday, June 15 at 8PM; on that day the network will air two episodes back-to-back and then the remaining eight episodes will air Saturday nights until the end. Though ABC hasn’t confirmed a return date, fans will finally learn (well, fingers crossed) if Terry O’Quinn is indeed the devil on 666 Park Avenue this summer.
On NBC, Do No Harm–which only lasted two weeks when it premiered in midseason–will return to finish its freshman run starting Saturday, June 29 at 10PM.
NBC pulls the fourth episode of ‘Hannibal’, shares informative web series, finally releases it on iTunes
Hannibal episode 104 “Ceuf” was originally set to air on Thursday, April 25 but a day before its airing NBC and series executive producer Bryan Fuller deemed the installment’s content too inappropriate for TV when taking in consideration of recent world news (i.e. the Boston bombings and the Newtown shooting). The hour’s intriguing synopsis:
A string of family murders takes place, and Will (Hugh Dancy) determines they were conducted by each of the families’ missing children, who were abducted and brainwashed into killing their old families for their sinister “new family.” Against Alana’s (Caroline Dhavernas) recommendation, Hannibal (Mads Mikkelson) checks Abigail (Kacey Rohl) out of the hospital for some frightening psychiatric practices that ultimately align her loyalty with him.
Fuller sided with the network to pull the episode from the schedule, but he didn’t leave fans of the creative new series empty handed. The network released online a five-part “web series” that includes select scenes from the missing episode that do not involve the admittedly gruesome “crime of the week.” You can watch all five parts (with an introduction from Fuller) at YouTube.
On Tuesday, April 30, after NBC aired Hannibal‘s fifth episode, the network finally released “Ceuf” into the wild making it available for download via iTunes. Fans of the show will surely gobble up the lost ep, even if it means watching it out of order.
Hannibal airs Thursday nights at 10PM on NBC.
Fan favorite nurse Morgan stars in ‘Mindy Project’ web series (clips inside)
Do you watch The Mindy Project? If so, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will thoroughly enjoy the sitcom’s web series centered on the show’s breakout star Ike Barinholtz. ‘Hemlock Grove’ is now available to stream on Netflix
Following Lillyhammer and House of Cards, Netflix’s next foray into original programming is here. Hemlock Grove, from Eli Roth (Hostel) and based on Brian McGreevy’s 2012 novel of the same name, is a horror mystery series involving murder and monsters. On April 19 all thirteen episodes were made available on Netflix and if you’re a subscriber you can binge-watch ’em all at anytime. Eye the freakishly awesome poster above, and then get a taste of what’s in store with a red-band trailer, a teaser, and arguably the most “realistic” looking werwolf transformation sequence you have ever seen. The new season of ‘Arrested Development’ gets its spring release date
Arrested Development returns with all-new episodes on (drum-roll please) May 26, 2013.
Netflix issued a press release on Thursday expressing the long-awaited news. In addition to announcing the release date, the streaming company increased the episode order to a grand total of 15, way up from the originally planned 10 installments. Just like it did with its last premiere of original programming in House of Cards, Netflix will make all 15 episodes of Arrested Development available at the same time precisely at 12:01AM PDT on Sunday, May 26. Take note: the new season premieres Memorial Day weekend so fans will have plenty of time to marathon it all before the work week/school resumes on Tuesday.
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix: “Arrested Development is now widely viewed as one of the top TV comedies of all time and Mitch Hurwitz is bringing it to Netflix in a brand new way, crafted for the on-demand generation that has come to discover the show in the years since it last appeared on TV. The highly anticipated return of this show is sure to make history all over again.”
Series creator and executive producer Mitch Hurwitz: “Ted said that? Wow. Well don’t print this obviously, but he’s going to be immensely disappointed. In case you didn’t know… Arrested Development centers around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) and his eccentric family comprised of his son George Michael (Michael Cera), his father George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor), his mother Lucille (Jessica Walter), his brothers George Oscar Bluth II (Will Arnett), Buster Bluth (Tony Hale) and sister Lindsay Funke (Portia de Rossi), and Lindsay’s husband Tobias (David Cross) and their daughter Maeby (Alia Shawkat). With the new episodes, each installment is dedicated to a different character’s point of view. And all of it is a major set up for a feature length film which is still in the works.
I don’t have a trailer for you yet (there may never be one since Hurwitz is keeping such a tight lid on the plotlines), but you can eye the first promotional poster above. I imagine the entire Bluth clan locked inside that bright orange shipping container with Gob trying his mightiest to bust them all out. TV reminder: ‘Mad Men’ premieres Sunday night at 9PM on AMC
Get an Old Fashioned ready; Don Draper and company return to the box in your living room Sunday, April 7 at 9PM on AMC. Tonight’s season 6 premiere of Mad Men, written and directed by sereis creator Matthew Weiner, is called “The Doorway” and it is two hours long. “If you like the show, there’s a good chance you’ll like the premiere… It is different than last year’s in a sense that it was my idea and I was just trying to give bang for a buck to an audience that I didn’t want to lose because we’d been away for so long. This year it’s really constructed like a film. It is its own story and hopefully it foreshadows the rest of the season,” Weiner shared to EW.
The season’s key art pasted above constructed by illustrator Brian Sanders features ad man Don Draper facing duality. When we last saw Don he was letting his wife Megan pursue her dream of acting; granting her this independence might have let Don slip into his old ways of infidelity. The poster does a fine job of expressing Don’s dilemma: will he continue to love Megan and remain faithful in his marriage or will he succumb to his former self and take the hand of a beautiful stranger? There are many ways the illustration can be interpreted; what do you think?
