Coke can redesign; gets a grip, is roll-resistant

Designed by Dzmirty Samal.

According to PSFK.com: “Rather than use the traditional cold forming manufacturing process all cans undergo today, Samal’s concept makes use of a forming process called impact extrusion in which aluminum is pressed at a high velocity into a mold. Besides having a unique look, the faceted sides could make the can easier to grip and would prevent the can from rolling when placed on its side.”

The mojito shoe looks uncomfortable by design

The mojito shoe is designed by London architect Julian Hakes.

Hakes: “The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.”

Special edition Nike Air Yeezys auctioned for a combined total of $23,900

Nike auctioned two special edition Air Yeezy sneakers.  Each of them are one-of-a-kind and were only made available for the sole purpose of the auction.

“One pair features a black leather upper and Jordan VI bottom, the first and only time the shoe will be made available with a Jumpman logo, and the other pair is THE Air Yeezy that Kanye worn on The 50th Annual Grammy Awards.”  As cool as these kicks are I cannot see anyone getting tooexcited about wanting to get a sneaker Kanye West wore at an awards show.  (Tee-hee…)

However, it’s for a good cause, and they are certainly nice pairs of sneakers that come in equally nice boxes.  The auctions ended last night.  The Jordan VI-inspired pair sold for $7,400 and the West-worn pair sold for $16,500.  DAMN!  All proceeds went to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital that’s located in Portland, Oregon.

See the gallery below for more images of the sneaker, a peek at the box, and the winning eBay pages.

The dervish lamp

Created by Philippe Malouin Design.

While borrowing a friend’s car for the day, I decided to have it washed to show my gratitude. I pulled into an automated carwash, and while inside, I couldn’t help but notice how the carwash brushes completely alter their shape from flimsy drooping hair covered rods to massive powerful beams. Could this quality of transformation be applied to the home sector? Where would a transforming apparatus find use in the home?

The carwash brushes go from limp, to cones, to beams. A lamp could use this whimsical feature to direct light, from a tube of light to a cone, to an open light source. The contraption, with its spinning, would produce a rather considerable amount of wind. Ceiling fans have not changed in the slightest ever since their introduction. Apart from finishes and rotation speed, they have always remained rather dull.

By morphing the ever-changing carwash brushes with a ceiling fan, a new product is achieved and completely redefines ceiling fans. The piece is called Dervish, its spinning qualities remind one of the Turkish spinning dancers going in a trance.

Google: Happy Birthday, H.G. Wells!

goog_e

And the Google doodles have led up to this, a celebration of what would have been author H.G. Wells’ 146th birthday.  From the “unexplained phenomena” and the mysterious phrase “all your “O” belong to us,” to the “crop circles,” and now to a scene from H.G. Wells’ famous story War of the Worlds, Google has played us all.  Was the Google-plex infiltrated by aliens from another planet?  Was Google planning to unveil a new logo or a new product or service?  Were they attempting to show the general public and corporations alike the power of the Google doodle and how its changes can support advertisements for movies and so on?  NOPE.

Google has officially stated today in a blog post that all the mysterious doodles have led to up to this one event, the birthday of H.G. Wells, and all of the doodles relate to his War of the Worlds.  “Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places; we wanted to celebrate H.G. Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what is possible, on this planet and beyond. And maybe have some fun while we were doing it.”  Yeah, by fun you mean having bloggers like me and crazy alien theorists like the rest of us postulate for days on end thinking about a possible explanation.  (Although things started to become clear with the second doodle; the coordinates Google posted on their Twitter page pointed to Horsell Commons, the initial place where the aliens landed in Wells’ novel.)  Google puts a cap on this solved mystery and leaves us with this: “The invasion of the logo by alien crafts and pods makes our series complete, but you’ll have to read the book to find out how Wells’ story really ends.”

Well played Google, well played.

Update:  It still doesn’t explain Google’s Street View image of these UFOs flying over London!  Muhahah….

3D renders of cities created from thousands of Flickr photos; awesome!

Scientists from the University of Washington’s Graphics and Imaging Laboratory, with the help of over 150,000 Flickr users, managed to create 3D digital models of three different cities.  According to PopSci.com, “each video includes clusters of small diamond shapes, which represent each photographer and his or her vantage point.  ..  The team built a new algorithm that proceeds in two steps — first, by matching the photos by what they had in common, puzzle-style, and then by determining the scene and each photographer’s pose.”  One of the scientists, Steve Seitz: “This is one of the main intellectual challenges here.  We want to see how much of the city can be reconstructed from people’s tourist photos.”

Their next task: to create a 3D rendering of an entire city using at least one million photographs.  So keep taking pictures people, and upload them to your Flickr accounts.  Check out more 3D renderings the team is working on at their YouTube page.  Cool stuff, huh?

HP & Dr. Dre reveal the first Beats-branded laptop

This HP-branded Envy laptop wears the Dr. Dre Beats logo proud.  It is the first in a series of products Dre and HP have in the pipeline for music-oriented consumers looking for solid sound at an affordable price.  This limited edition Envy 15 features a 15-inch screen and comes in at 1-inches thin and 5.18-pounds.  It will include a ‘future’ Core i7 processor and will have the capacity for 16GB of RAM and two solid state drives.  Although official specs are limited for now, expect the Beats-inspired Envy 15 to cost at least $1,799, as its counterpart (the standard Envy) costs that much.  I will keep my ear to the ground and watch for updates on this and other Beats-branded machines.  The time for a revolution in better sound quality is now, right Dre?

Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive 2009 tease

Oh, there’s nothing to doubt here. IT’S MEGAN FOX.

Remember that video I posted a while back? Yeah, that one. Esquire shot Megan Fox’s cover shoot with a RED One video camera rather than a digital camera. This allows for extreme detail and produces amazing results for stills. Photographer Greg Williams is shooting the sequel with “the first-ever Red One camera outfitted with the Epic 5K Mysterium-X Sensor.” And if you thought the first video/photo shot was blazing hot, you haven’t seen anything yet. This upgraded RED One camera shoots at four-times HD!

For now, peek at the gallery below for two exclusive stills from the photo shoot. Check back here for the full video and Esquire‘s official announcement of Sexiest Woman Alive this October. Chyeah!
