OS boot-up and USB transfer times like you’ve never seen them before–super fast!

This first video shows a Windows 7 PC booting up in under one second.  Phoenix’s Instant Boot BIOS combines with Windows 7’s optimized startup procedure to start up the OS in a very quick manner.  Engadget witnessed “a retrofitted Dell Adamo hit the Windows desktop in 20 seconds, while a Lenovo T400s with a fast SSD got there in under 10.”  Phoenix plans on releasing their Instant Boot software in the near future.

This next video shows the power of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 at work.  USB 3.0 is boatloads faster than current USB modules.  Embedded.com gives an example: “HD TV and movies can be downloaded in seconds, limited only by the storage device’s transfer rate.  A flash drive using USB 3.0 can move 1 Gbyte of data to a host device in 3.3 seconds, compared to 33 seconds with USB 2.0 (according to the USB Implementers’ Forum).”

Imagine this:  You sit down at your computer and hit the power button.  A few seconds later everything is fully loaded and you’re at the desktop.  Your friend gave you a USB thumb drive that contains some MP3 and MOV files you want to transfer to the desktop.  After plugging in your drive to a USB 3.0 compatable module you will be watching movies and listening to music within just a few minutes rather than in a number of hours.  Look out for the Phoneix instant-on software and USB 3.0, coming your way very soon, but not soon enough.

Music video: Drake – “Forever” (Featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne, & Eminem)

There’s a reason this song made its way to the number one spot on the iTunes chart and still resides in the top ten.  It’s good.  I will point out, though, that some of the featured artists do bring it down some.  Yeezy and Weezy’s verses are weak in comparison to Eminem’s crazy good verse that follows.  It’s worth the listen for the catchy chorus, and even more so for Em’s ingenious rhyme-fest at the end.  Download “Forever” on iTunes here.

Microsoft Courier booklet device

The awesome dudes at Gizmodo picked up this story earlier this week, and boy is it a fascinating one.  What was a big secret for Microsoft has now been reveiled to the public–a MS-hardware and software designed booklet.

Gizmodo has the details:

Until recently, it was a skunkworks project deep inside Microsoft, only known to the few engineers and executives working on it.

Courier is a real device, and we’ve heard that it’s in the “late prototype” stage of development. It’s not a tablet, it’s a booklet. The dual 7-inch (or so) screens are multitouch, and designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. They’re connected by a hinge that holds a single iPhone-esque home button. Statuses, like wireless signal and battery life, are displayed along the rim of one of the screens. On the back cover is a camera, and it might charge through an inductive pad, like the Palm Touchstone charging dock for Pre.

So, the MS Courier is in fact a real device, it packs two 7-inch multitouch displays and an integrated camera, and has a UI design that looks sleek, organized, and most importantly, simple.  For more on the UI, check out the video below for a quick tour of the Courier user interface, still in development.  One question: What’s with the stylus?  That’s so 1990s!

Honda U3-X, a Segway unicycle

If you are at all interested in this Personal Mobility Device, read on for the details, straight from Honda.

“Honda has developed a new personal mobility technology, U3-X. It is a compact experimental device that fits comfortably between the riders legs, to provide free movement in all directions just as in human walking forward, backward, side-to-side, and diagonally. Honda will continue research and development of the device including experiments in a real-world environment to verify the practicality of the device.

This new personal mobility device makes it possible to adjust speed and move, turn and stop in all directions when the rider leans the upper body to shift body weight. This was achieved through application of advanced technologies including Hondas balance control technology, which was developed through the robotics research of ASIMO, Hondas bipedal humanoid robot, and the worlds first* omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System, or HOT Drive System), which enables movement in all directions, including not only forward and backward, but also directly to the right and left and diagonally. In addition, this compact size and one-wheel-drive personal mobility device was designed to be friendly to the user and people around it by making it easier for the rider to reach the ground from the footrest and placing the rider on roughly the same eye level as other people or pedestrians.”

Human gives birth to a giant baby

Earlier this week an Indonesian woman gave birth to a 19.2 pound baby boy.  After a successful Caesarian section the child cried unusually loud, screaming for, you guess it, his first cheeseburger.

According to LemonDrop.com: “The baby is probably the size it is because his mother is diabetic, a condition which could have raised her glucose levels and thereby the baby’s, giving him more sugar than he needed and making him grow like a superhero fetus.”
