Trailer: Another Earth

This trailer for the Fox Searchlight movie Another Earth piqued my interest the other day, thought I’d share it with you. Newcomer Brit Marling (who wrote, produced, and stars in this film) invites us to a time when our world discovers a nearby planet that also provides a home for advanced life forms. They call it Earth 2. The sci-fi elements seem interesting, but at the heart of the film lies a human drama and you will see what I mean after watching the trailer. The movie also stars William Mapother who played Ethan Rom on Lost. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. There it received high praise and it won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize for “focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character.” Fox Searchlight picked it up and will distribute it in the US and Canada on July 22, 2011.

Synopsis: In Another Earth, Rhoda Williams (Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.

Game trailer: Black Ops, with star-studded zombies!

Is this the greatest zombified video game trailer after Dead Island? I think so. To promote the latest DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops, Activision put together this insanely awesome trailer that stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Danny Trejo (Machete) Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead), and the father of zombie films George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead). The DLC content pack is called “Escalation” and it’s described like this: “Set in a mysterious, ice-covered, remote Siberian island and inspired by legendary writer and director George A. Romero, a group of four fearless explorers fight for their lives amidst an army of bloodthirsty Soviet zombies.” Watch the Robert Rodriguez-inspired (Planet Terror) trailer above and anticipate Escalation’s May 3 release.

iPhone 4 to receive new coat of paint tomorrow

The day has finally arrived. Apple figured out how to make an iPhone 4 a color other than black. In June 2010 at WWDC Apple announced the latest version of the iPhone and showed off the beautiful hardware in two colors: black and white. Claiming manufacturing problems, the company delayed the launch of the white model on numerous occasions, to the point where everyone started to suspect Jobs & co. would simply wait for iPhone 5 to introduce the new hue. Well now we can all put those worries to rest; today Apple released a press statement (located after the break) saying that the white iPhone will arrive in stores tomorrow, April 28 around the world.

Says Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing: “The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful. We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.”

And here are the deets: White iPhone 4 models will be available from Apple’s online store, at Apple’s retail stores, AT&T and Verizon Wireless stores, and select Apple Authorized Resellers. The following countries will see phantom handset in their stores starting tomorrow: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the US. Besides change in color, the hardware remains the same as the black model and so does pricing: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB–on contract with a wireless carrier.

Hip hip….now when’s iPhone 5 coming out?

HTC’s Droid Incredible 2 hits Verizon April 28 for $200

A new day, a new Droid. A little over a year after its original incarnation, the Incredible gets an upgrade. So what does the sequel bring to the table? It packs Qualcomm’s latest 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4-inch super LCD display (the original featured a 3.7-inch screen), eight megapixel with dual LED flash capable of 720p HD video capture, 1.3-megapixel front facing camera (a new addition!), and it runs Android 2.2 with the latest version of HTC Sense. The world phone can act as a 3G Mobile Hotspot that can connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Unfortunately the Incredible 2 does not support Verizon’s new 4G LTE network. 3G’ll have to do. 200 bucks is the fee (with a new 2-year contract, of course), and it goes on sale the 28th of this month–that’s tomorrow! Full PR after the break.

Nintendo confirms Wii successor, to be previewed in June, released in 2012

Gamers, listen here! Today the house that built Mario formally announced the Wii successor. Sure details are sparse, but at least we’ve got confirmation that something new and exciting is on the way, and it’s coming sooner than you might think. In a press statement out of Japan, Nintendo refers to their next-gen console as the “Wii’s Successor System” and they say a “playable model” will be shown off at E3 in early June, followed by a launch in 2012.

What can gamers expect from the next-gen Wii? The only official word to come out of Nintendo (besides the aforementioned press release which is sitting after the break) is provided by company president Satoru Iwata: “We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles. It’s difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven’t obtained wide acceptance yet.” They’ve managed to bring glasses-free 3D to their portable 3DS, but the technology to make the magic work on larger scale just isn’t there yet. So what then might Iwata be referring to when he hints at a “new approach” to video games?

Late last week Kotaku reported that, according to undisclosed sources, the next-gen Wii will utilize an entirely new breed of controller. In addition to housing eight buttons and two analog sticks, the new controller is rumored to also boast a 6.2 inch screen and a camera. They say: “The 6.2-inch screen will receive data wirelessly from the Nintendo console and presents an array of options, from putting the player’s inventory or map on the controller screen, to allowing players to combine it with the controller’s camera to snap photos that could be imported into a game or even turning it into some sort of glorified viewfinder (we’re unclear about whether the camera on the controller points at the player or can be outward-facing; we’ve heard both — maybe it swivels?).” Then they propose: “You could think of the new Nintendo console as turning your living room into a glorified mega-DS…. your TV is the upper-screen; your controller is the lower touchscreen.”

Other Wii 2 rumors to chew on… The new controller will not replace existing Wii-motes, as the system is said to be backwards compatible with all current Wii games. The often labeled Wii HD will be capable of running games at HD resolutions (up to 1080p) and it will be more powerful than current-gen systems (read: Xbox 360, PS3). And finally, the next-gen Wii is internally referred to by its codename “Project Cafe,” so go around saying that to your friends if you want to act all cool like you know everything. Though these rumors are certainly intriguing, let’s all anticipate the E3 reveal where Ninty will formally lay out the specifications, controller scheme(s), and perhaps a launch lineup.

Droid Charge by Samsung comes to Verizon April 21 for $300

The Charge is the first Droid-branded phone from Samsung. Unlike like its family members, however, it’ll cost you a whopping $299.99 after rebate. But then again, it is also the first Droid to boast 4G speeds. Let’s talk specs. The Charge packs a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display (Samsung touts its “brightness, clarity and outdoor visibility”), 1GHz processor (no dual-core action here, unfortunately), a rear-facing 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera that can be used for taking stills and video chatting, and it’s powered by Android 2.2 with Flash support and mobile hotspot capability. And of course it’s preloaded with Sammy’s Media Hub that “offer[s] a vast lineup of critically acclaimed films and TV programs for rent or purchase.” But let’s take a step back to mobile hotspot capability; the Charge can share its 4G connection with up to 10 WiFi-enabled devices or a 3G connection with up to 5 devices and get this–according to the press release the “feature will be included for a limited time at no additional charge.” Sweet! The latest Droid handset lands on Verizon Wireless April 21. Sneak a peek below. PR after the break.

Apple reports 2011 Q2 earnings: $5.99b profit, Macs up 28%, iPhones up 113%, iPods down 17%

It’s happened again… Apple’s 2011 second quarter financial results are in and it’s another record-breaking one for the tech company. Apple posted a $5.99 billion profit on $24.67 billion in revenue.  Compare this to one year ago, that’s up from a profit of $3.07 billion on $13.5 billion in revenue.  Says CEO Steve Jobs: “With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we’re firing on all cylinders. We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.”

Now let’s break it down by product category.  Apple sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter (representing a 28 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter); 18.65 million iPhones (representing a 86 percent unit growth); and 9.02 million iPods (representing an 17 percent unit decline).  It was specified that the company sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter, and we can compare this total to the number of iPad sold in 2011 Q1: 7.33 million.

Looking ahead to the third quarter, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer expects revenue of about $23 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $5.03.

Remix: Britney Spears – “Till The World Ends” (Featuring Nicki Minaj & Ke$ha)

Still can’t get Britney Spears’ club banger single “Till The World Ends” out of your head? This is no cure. The Femme Fatale has rounded up other pop superstars Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha to join her on the catchy track. In this slightly altered version of the song, Nicki looks inside herself, locates her alter egos, and starts the song with this new intro: “Chimpanzees is hatin’, but I take it all in stride/ Put her in a jungle with bananas on the side/ Told you they’d revive your career, but somebody lied/ I ain’t talkin’ poultry when I say this chicken’s fried.” Then she explodes into a full on rap verse in a way only Barbie can impress. Ke$ha, who co-wrote the bumping track, hops onto the chorus later on. Listen here:

Kid Cudi renames his band, gives one to new label

This week Kid Cudi kicked off his Cud Life Tour in Hollywood and then brought his talent to New York City where he made back-to-back-to-back live appearances at the Roseland Ballroom. I happened to attend the second NYC show, and it was during this set that Lonely Stoner (no more) made two big announcements concerning his future plans. First, he decided to change the name of his band. As any Cudi fan should know by now, the rapper’s teaming up with producer Dot Da Genius to form a rock/rap band for his next album. Originally Cudder named the band Wizard but just recently he made a change. Henceforth the Cudi/Dot collab band is to be referred to as 2 Be Continuum. At the concert Cudi explained, “When I went into iTunes and I put in Wizard there was like five bands named Wizard. I needed something more original, something different.” Though the original name has been scraped Cudi promises his music is “still wizardry at its finest.” We can expect the first sampling from 2 Be Continuum to drop later this summer. During the same break in song, Cudi announced the name of his new label and that’s called Wicked Awesome Records. But of course! And now you can peek after the break to watch Cudder drop all the details himself. Continue reading Kid Cudi renames his band, gives one to new label

Super 8 gets interactive inside Portal 2

Valve’s Portal 2 just came out this past Tuesday, and it’s already being touted as the year’s best game. In an interesting move, Paramount turned to the game’s developers to insert this interactive trailer for the upcoming sci-fi flick Super 8. Gamers can move around the universe built by J.J. Abrams by accessing “Super 8” inside Portal‘s main menu under Extras. Lazy? You can watch it unfold in the video above. It’s nothing particularly exciting, but it’s neat to see the train wreck we’ve come to know and question come alive in video game form.

HBO renews ‘Game of Thrones’ after a decent debut in the ratings

Well that was quick. Just two after its series premiere, HBO has gone ahead and renewed fantasy series Game of Thrones for a second season. The next season will bow next year (a specific timeline has not been worked out yet), and it will be based on George R.R. Martin’s next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Clash of Kings.

Michael Lombardo, president of HBO: “We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers. This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”

No matter how the show did in the ratings it was destined to return for at least second season. Adapting Martin’s vast world of Westeros is a huge undertaking, there’s no way it all would have been squandered after just one hack at it. It did, however, fare decently in the ratings. 2.2 million viewers tuned into the 9PM premiere; for comparison’s sake this is down 54% from the Boardwalk Empire premiere which drew 4.8 million viewers in September. HBO was smart to air the premiere in three time-slots and across their various channels Sunday night. They picked up an additional 1.2 million and 800,000 viewers for the second and third telecasts, respectively. All together, a solid 4.2 million people watched the Game of Thrones premiere that night, and we’ll have to wait and see how these numbers hold up come next Sunday. Whatever the case, fans of the book series can rejoice in knowing that so much more is in the works.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9PM on HBO.
