Six men journey to Mars…in Russia

Last week a six man crew (comprised of Russian, French, Italian and Chinese engineers, doctors, and one astronaut) embarked on a simulated journey to Mars.  The team will be locked up in a contained space for 520 days to “simulate the psycological stress of a real space mission” to Mars.  The simulation includes a 250-day flight to the Mars, a 30-day exploration period, and a 230-day return to planet Earth.  Though the crew will not experience weightlessness, the jouney will be as close to the real thing as possible.  In fact, crew members will only shower once every ten days and communications to the “outside world” will be delayed by up to forty minutes.  All in the name of research!  Watch the the video above to learn more about the mission to Mars in Moscow.  Godspeed, friends!

Music video: Eminem – “Not Afraid”

Here’s the music video for Eminem’s first single off his next album “Not Afraid.”  In it you see Eminem rap in a basement, push his way through a maze of mirrors, and fly above a destroyed city (with a not so subtle ad for Beats by Dre plastered in the background).  Does Eminem rise from the wreckage that he believes was his last album Relapse with this chart-topping single?  Download the song at iTunesRecovery drops June 22.

Will Forte to guest star in Parks & Rec next season

SNL’s MacGruber (the movie is hilarious, go see it!) has accepted an invitation to guest star in NBC’s Parks & Recreation in a season three episode.  According to Ausiello, Forte “will play a Pawnee resident whose obsession with the Twilight franchise complicates a pet project Poehler’s Leslie is working on.  Hint: Think time capsule.”  Forte will be third SNL member to visit Pawnee, following Fred Armisen as  Raul, the head of the Venezuelan delegation, in “Sister City” and Andy Samberg’s loud-mouthed Park Ranger Carl in “Park Safety.”

Concept images of Thor & Captain America emerge

This week images of the next two Avengers have leaked into the wild.  First there’s Thor the Norse god who wields the Mjolner hammer.  (If you have not seen Iron Man 2 yet, make sure you stay for the credits for a sneak peek of said hammer.)  If you are doubting that this image of Thor is real, just compare it to the official still of Chris Hemsworth as Thor outed by Marvel a few weeks ago.  The concept image matches up pretty well if you ask me.  Thor is expected to hit theatres May 6, 2011.

Next we have the first (ever) image of what Chris Evans will look like as Captain America, the first Avenger.  And you know what, he’s looking pretty bad-ass.  From the mask to the sheild (which was also hinted at in Iron Man 2), the suspenders, and the kevlar red-white-and-blue retro-fitted suit, Cap appears ready for the big screen.  Captain America: The First Avenger, directed by Joe Johnston, is expected to hit theatres July 22, 2011.

Look in the gallery below for more concept images of Thor and Captain America.

‘Transformers 3’ finds Megan Fox replacement in Victoria’s Secret model

Though Paramount has yet to confirm the news, multiple sources reveal that Victoria’s Secret drop-dead-gorgeous model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley will replace Megan Fox as Sam Witwickey’s (Shia LaBeouf) love interest in the next Transformers flick.  Victoria’s Secret has gone so far as publishing this video that congratulates Rosie for making the cut.  And hot damn does she make a great replacement.  As much as I took pleasure in watching Megan Fox run for her life in the first two movies (she was the sole reason I went to see Transformers 2, really), I think Rosie will suffice, wouldn’t you say?  Out with the old, in with the new…right?

Production has begun on Transformers 3 with a release slated for July 1, 2011.  Michael Bay, your wish has been granted.

Note: Michael Bay directed an extended commercial for Victoria’s Secret back in December.  So yeah, there’s that.

A zombie from AMC’s “The Walking Dead” [Update]

The Walking Dead Picture

Look what we have here!  It’s a makeup test photo from AMC’s “The Walking Dead“, a new TV series based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book that shares the same name.  The upcoming series stars Andrew Lincoln as protagonist Rick Grimes, Sarah Waynes Callies as his wife Lori Grimes, and Jon Bernthal as Grimes’ partner.  Together they will lead a resistance in the fight against a zombie-dominated world.  “The Walking Dead” begins this October on AMC.  That is one good looking zombie, if I may be so bold.

Update: Quint from Aint It Cool News sat down with The Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman to talk about the upcoming AMC series.  Look after the break for some worthy takeaways. Continue reading A zombie from AMC’s “The Walking Dead” [Update]

Coke & Mentos Rocket Car

We all know what happens when you combine Coke with Mentos candies (a fizzy explosion).  But have you ever imagined if the force from such an explosion could power a vehicle (of sorts) to move forward in space?  Well wonder no more, people!  Using 108 bottles of Coke Zero and 648 Mentos mints, the “Coke & Mentos guys” have created a rocket car.

The Coke Zero & Mentos Rocket Car uses a piston mechanism: a six-foot long rod sits inside a six-foot long tube attached to each bottle of Coke Zero. When the Mentos drop into the soda, the pressure tries to push the rod out of the tube. With 108 rods all pushing at once, that gives us a lot of power. All that power is pushing against a wall braced with 3,600 pounds of cement blocks. So all the force is directed into moving the Coke Zero & Mentos Rocket Car forward. We get one big push for six feet, and then it’s all coasting from there.

Watch their successful test run in the video above.  Ah, the power of science.

Lego people put their bricks together to print out “Hello World” with felt-tipped pen

YouTuber horseattack has managed to construct a printer made of Legos.  He describes his work: “Lego felt tip 110″ printer connected to an Apple Mac. This is not a kit you can buy and does not use mindstorms. I designed/built/coded it all from scratch including analog motor electronics, sensors and printer driver, the USB interface uses a “wiring” board.” Now watch the magic unfold in the video above.
