Creepy surgical masks for the modern world

Masked in Flight, designed by Sruli Recht.

Icelander Sruli Recht has created a collection of surgical masks for the modern, disease-filled world.  The masks are made from folded laser cut parchment and feature an air purifying design with replaceable N95 filters.  What differentiates the various masks are options that include light filters, sound reduction ear covers, and full or half face sizes.  Beyond creepy…but I like ’em.

An interview with “Merton the Chatroulette Piano Improv Guy”

We’ve laughed at his original video and watched as Ben Folds (whom many thought he actually was) recorded an “ode” to him live on tour.  Here we have an intruiging interview with the man known only as “Merton,” and in it we learn that he is not actually Ben Folds (bummer, I know), he has “awesome hair” hidden within the hoodie, and he’s currently putting together a bunch of new videos featuring more instruments.  Well, what are you waiting for?

Nintendo slips out details of the successor to the DS — the 3DS

Hot off the heels of these latest rumors, Nintendo may or may not have slipped up in releasing a short but sweet press release about a forthcoming successor to the Nintendo DS handheld temporarily dubbed the Nintendo 3DS.  That’s right, as in 3D.  According to the press release found on Nintendo’s Japan website, the 3DS will allow games to be “enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.”  Whether or not the 3D tech will work like this DSi Japanese game is yet to be known.  It’s also important to note that it specifies the 3DS as the successor to the DS series (which includes the DS, DSi, DSi XL).  The 3DS will be backwards-compatible with both DS and DSi games.  Engadget scooped up further information; it looks like the 3DS will pump out 3D images using a parallax barrier LCD screen made by Sharp and Hitachi.  The 3DS will pack dual screens, each sizing at 4 inches diagonally, 3D control sticks (these just might end up being analog nubs), vibration feedback, faster WiFi transfers, and improved battery life.  We won’t have to wait much longer to hear the final word; Nintendo is expected to officially unveil the Nintendo DS successor this June at E3 2010.

Ben Folds’ “Ode to Merton” brings us more Chatroulette freestylin’

I bet you’ve all seen or heard of mystery man “Merton” who actually made Chatroulette’s existence something to actually take interest in (at least for a few minutes).  He interacted with strangers by playing the piano, improvising his lyrics based on the stranger’s looks and actions.  After this hilarious video made its rounds on the Internet, many started to believe “Merton” was actually musican Ben Folds.  A source close to Folds denied this rumor.  Fortunately Folds is a funny man at heart and decided to take hold of this opportunity.  And so we get the video you see above: Ben Folds performing an “ode to Merton,” hoodie and all, in front of a live audience during a stop on his tour.

Music video: Diane Birch – “Valentino” (Super cool augmented reality!)

Watch this music video for Diane Birch’s catchy tune “Valenino,” a single off her debut album Bible Belt.  It features some old-school augmented reality tricks.  It all looks easy at first glance, but there is much choreography that had to be memorized and performed to perfection in order to pull everything off.  Just look after the break for a behind-the-scenes video that reveals all the magic and see what I mean.

Fringe: The Musical

During a Glee-themed week of musical programming in May, FOX is airing an musically-inspired episode of Fringe.  How odd, I know!  The creepy and the fantastical will turn even freakier in the episode titled “Overture” that will feature series regulars Agent Dunham (Anna Torv), Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), Agent Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole), Nina Sharp (Blair Brown), and even Broyles (Lance Reddick) break out into song and dance.  No, this isn’t a peek into the alternate universe where all our characters live as professional singers and dancers.  The characters will cover popular songs that will play out in a Walter Bishop hallucination.

Says musically trained Farnsworth (Nicole): “When I first read that, I thought, ‘How are they going to pull this off? This is really weird.’ And it makes complete sense within the story. It’s essentially Walter kind of manifesting his idea. He’s trying to get his mind off of, you know, what’s going on because he’s just waiting to see what’s going to go on with Peter. And essentially he’s kind of created this little world in his head. And so everything is super-symbolic so all the characters embody the qualities that he notices about them the most, which is really neat. And it happens in the 1940s. Everybody’s in 1940s dress, but they still have cell phones and stuff. So it’s just his brain, because he’s telling a story to someone. Sort of like a bedtime story to help ease his anxiety. So we get to sing in it.”

What’s interesting is that Sharp (Brown) and Broyles (Reddick) come from musical theater backgrounds.  Says Reddick: “…everyone was kind of freaked out about the singing.  For me, it was like having to play the piano at the same time; that freaked me out a little bit. But, yeah, it was fun. For me, what was more fun was actually being able to play completely to the character.”

As strange as this all sounds, it might just work.  If Buffy can pull it off, so can the Bishops & Company.
