HP utilizing tilt-shifting photography for latest ad campaign

And it rocks.

HP has used the techniques of tilt-shifting photography and minuature faking for the latest ad campaign called “Create Amazing.”  Tilt-shift photography “refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene.”  Miniature faking is “a process in which a photograph of a life-size location or object is made to look like a photograph of a miniature scale model.  Blurring parts of the photo simulates the shallow depth of field normally encountered in close-up photography, making the scene seem much smaller than it actually is.”  “A miniature can also be simulated digitally, using an image editor to blur the top and bottom of the photograph, so that only the subject is sharp.”

UPDATE:  Apparently the video was taken off YouTube because the filmmaker still needs to clear it with HP.  I will repost as soon as it reappears on the Internet.

Sly photographer creates invisibility cloak from images

This is so cool.  French photographer Fred Lebain went to New York City and took pictures at various locales.  Then he printed out poster-size versions of the images.  He then brought those large prints back to their respective original locations and held them up in front of him.  Lebain seemingly vanishes behind the large image when he holds it up in precisely the right area.

The only way to save magazines is to bring them to life

Photographer Alexx Henry and his team have created this video to show how creating a “living portrait” could be created and designed in a not-so-distant future.  Here Henry is photographing triathlete Chris Lieto using the RED One and the Canon 5D Mark II cameras for Outside Magazine.  With the newspaper and magazine industries slowly losing the battle against the Internet for providing news, pictures, and other content, animating text and images in these mediums might be the only way to save them from extinction.

PhotoSketch magically turns a sketch into a montage

Photosketch, created by Tao Chen, Ming-Ming Cheng, Ping Tan, Ariel Shamir, and Shi-Min Hu at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University and the National University of Singapore.

In simplistic terms, here’s how it works.  A user draws a sketch and gives a label to each object in it (ie. bike, birds, boat).  Then, the sketch is transformed into an actual picture with real object by “seamlessly stiching a background and several foreground items from photographs retrieved from the Internet in accordance with the sketch and text labels.”

Watch the video above to see the magic unfold, then check out samples in the gallery below.

Meet Esquire’s Sexist Woman Alive, Kate Beckinsale

kate beckinsale as the sexiest woman alive on the cover of esquire

In what is a surprise turn of events, Esquire has decided to name the beautiful Kate Beckinsale this year’s Sexist Woman Alive.  After filming and shooting Megan Fox with a 3K RED One camera for a photoshoot last May, director Greg Williams hinted at using an upgraded 5k Red Epic camera to shoot the Sexiest Woman Alive.  This hint misled me to believe that Megan Fox would be shot again, this time for the special shoot.  Today Esquire has released the photoshoot video, directed by Greg Williams, of actress Kate Beckinsale.  And damn does she look good in super-HD.  The 5K RED Epic camera allows the photographer to shoot video in high definition and then choose specific frames to print for the magazine cover and story.  Congratuations, Beckinsale.  We all look forward to picking up the Sexiest Woman Alive edition of Esquire this November.

Birds perch, man sees music

“Birds on the Wires” by Jarbas Agnelli.

Agnelli: “Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn’t the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.”

Mr. Agnelli, this is quite an original idea, and I am very impressed by your observation and musical ability.  To see the birds in such a fascinating pattern like that of musical notes, transform their locations into a melody, and share it with the world is a very cool achievement, to say the least.  Readers, enjoy the creativity and splendor that is in the video above.
