House finale shot entirely with Canon 5D Mark II

Director Greg Yaitanes has informed House fans ’round the world that the upcoming season finale of House will filmed using a Canon 5D Mark II, a DSLR that shoots great HD video.  Yaitanes shared the news on Twitter and began fielding questions about the experience.  The meat of the feedback tells us the production team had a spendid time using the camera.  He shot in “24fps and wanted it for ease of use in tight spaces”; he used “all the Canon primes and the 24-70 and the 70-200 zoom” lenses;  he “mostly gave it a hand held feel…or [used it] on a small tripod; and lastly he “loved it and feel it’s the future” of TV filmmaking.  We already know how well the 5D Mark II can shoot; this episode is going to be gorgeous.  The finale airs May 17 at 8PM on FOX.

A still from the Fringe musical episode

Ausiello Files’ snagged a still from the set of the April 29 Fringe musical episode.  In it, the characters will cover popular songs that will play out in a Walter Bishop hallucination.

Executive producer Jeff Pinkner: “We didn’t set out to do a musical.  We set out to do an episode that explored Walter’s state of mind — he’s dealing with some very upsetting news.  When we realized that the way Walter would deal with such news would be to try to anesthetize himself with copious amounts of marijuana, well, singing and dancing became a natural outcome.”  Agent Olivia Dunham embodies what Ausiello calls “a retro private-eye persona” and Pinkner goes on to tease: “It’ll be interesting to see how Walter really perceives her.”

Fringe airs Thursday nights at 9PM on FOX.

Fringe retro title sequence

Fringe fans, how neat was this retro title sequence that played out at the beginning of the show’s best episode yet?  In “Peter,” we were finally told about the heartbreaking story concerning Walter and his dying son and how he stole alternate universe Peter from Walternate.  Clearly the producers wanted to have some fun with this flashback episode, and so they altered the title sequence and changed the font of the hovering location words when the places being shown were set in the past.  Thank goodness FOX renewed Fringe.  Cue sigh of relief.  (Look after the break to compare this to the standard opening sequence.)

The clock stops on 24, this final season will lead into the feature film

The day I thought would never come is here.  It’s official: 24 Season 8, the season that’s currently airing now, will be the final season for the show.  Over the past few weeks there have been whispers that the 24 creative team would jump ship from FOX to NBC in order to salvage a ninth season.  With star Keifer Sutherland’s contract running up this year, along with other members of the production team, it would have been an extremely expensive ordeal to bring the show back again.  With ratings lower than usual and the narrative becoming somewhat stale after eight seasons on the air, 24 has decided to call it quits after this season.

Says Sutherland (who plays Jack Bauer): “The writers are producing the equivalent of 12 films a year, which is unheard of, and [executive producer] Howard felt to do a ninth would be potentially damaging.  We both felt strongly that there has been a demand and an interest in a 24 film, which would be a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day, so we felt it was time to move in that direction.”

And that brings us to the 24 feature film that’s in the works.  It’s happening people, so there’s no need to bring out the tissues just yet.  20th Century Fox is backing the movie, with Billy Ray (State of Play) writing the screenplay.  Says Sutherland on how the series finale will tie into the movie: “We wanted to create a definitive end for Jack Bauer.  Since we do have the intention to make the feature film, it would lead into that and certainly set that up.”  In fact, since a 24 movie loses the restrictions of the story unfolding in real time, the creative juices must be flowing for Sutherland and co.  “Something we’ve dealt with in the series is how the crisis always has to come to us because we don’t have time to move anywhere in a real time world,” Sutherland adds.  “In a two-hour (movie) representation of the 24 world, planes, trains, and automobiles all of a sudden become a factor because you are not required to go scene by scene in real time. That’s something I can say I am very excited about.”  Hell yeah, me too!

But as far as the series finale is concerned, Howard Gordon and Sutherland are contemplating either a happy or tragic ending for Jack Bauer.  “We go to a very definitive, very complex place.”  I am a long time 24 fan; hell, I’ve been watching this show for eight years now.  As sad as this news may seem, think of it like this:  How many bad days can Jack Bauer experience?  I mean, we don’t want him to die or anything… It’s time for Jack Bauer (and us) to finally receive closure.

Sutherland released this official statement of gratitude: “This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible. While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted 24 to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon. This feels like the culmination of all our efforts from the writers to the actors to our fantastic crew and everyone at Fox. Looking ahead to the future, Howard Gordon and I are excited about the opportunity to create the feature film version of 24. But when all is said and done, it is the loyal worldwide fan base that made it possible for me to have the experience of playing the role of Jack Bauer, and for that I am eternally grateful.”

Executive producer and showrunner Howard Gordon followed up: “Kiefer and I have loved every minute of making 24, but we all believe that now is the right time to call it a day.  I echo his sentiments of gratitude toward the show’s amazing creative team, as well as the studio and network who have always believed in us and shown us unbelievable support.”

Need more proof?  24’s Mary Lynn Rajskuub (Chloe O’Brien) tweets: “Just found out we got the word officially. This is 24’s last season.”  Executive producer and off-and-on director Jon Cassar shared this tweet: “News from the 24 set,the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching.”

Fringe: The Musical

During a Glee-themed week of musical programming in May, FOX is airing an musically-inspired episode of Fringe.  How odd, I know!  The creepy and the fantastical will turn even freakier in the episode titled “Overture” that will feature series regulars Agent Dunham (Anna Torv), Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), Agent Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole), Nina Sharp (Blair Brown), and even Broyles (Lance Reddick) break out into song and dance.  No, this isn’t a peek into the alternate universe where all our characters live as professional singers and dancers.  The characters will cover popular songs that will play out in a Walter Bishop hallucination.

Says musically trained Farnsworth (Nicole): “When I first read that, I thought, ‘How are they going to pull this off? This is really weird.’ And it makes complete sense within the story. It’s essentially Walter kind of manifesting his idea. He’s trying to get his mind off of, you know, what’s going on because he’s just waiting to see what’s going to go on with Peter. And essentially he’s kind of created this little world in his head. And so everything is super-symbolic so all the characters embody the qualities that he notices about them the most, which is really neat. And it happens in the 1940s. Everybody’s in 1940s dress, but they still have cell phones and stuff. So it’s just his brain, because he’s telling a story to someone. Sort of like a bedtime story to help ease his anxiety. So we get to sing in it.”

What’s interesting is that Sharp (Brown) and Broyles (Reddick) come from musical theater backgrounds.  Says Reddick: “…everyone was kind of freaked out about the singing.  For me, it was like having to play the piano at the same time; that freaked me out a little bit. But, yeah, it was fun. For me, what was more fun was actually being able to play completely to the character.”

As strange as this all sounds, it might just work.  If Buffy can pull it off, so can the Bishops & Company.

Glee Season 2 gets super-sized

Glee creator Ryan Murphy shares the good news: “Season 2 will be much bigger and much longer.  We are talking about doing 25 episodes as opposed to [the customary] 22.”  Glee Season 2 is going to be Season 1 injected with steroids–more episodes, more songs per episode, less pregnancy side-story, and new locations.  Murphey adds it will have a “sweet feeling… like I loved it when The Brady Bunch went to Hawaii.  I want [New Directions] to go to some competition in New York.”  Don’t get too excited yet.  There’s still a live concert to attend and the second half of Season 1 to complete!

Glee returns with new episodes April 1 at 9PM on FOX.

FOX summer schedule includes Glee, Lie to Me, SYTYCD

On Tuesday FOX released its summer schedule.  Notable inclusions: Glee returns to the airwaves April 13 and will run straight to its finale on Tuesday, June 8.  It will be paired with So You Think You Can Dance (returns Thursday, May 27) in the 9PM time slot during the first two weeks of June.  Lie to Me has been on haitus for a while now and won’t return until Monday, June 7 at 8PM.  This does not bode well for the show; there has to be a reason why FOX decided to hold off a spring return (low ratings?).  Lie to Me will be paired with a new show from Matt Nix (the creator of Burn Notice) called The Good Guys.  Then there’s Past Life, which is all but dead.  The remaining unaired episodes will air Fridays at 8PM.  IGN took the words right out of my mouth: “What’s worse than airing on FOX on Fridays? Airing on FOX on Fridays in the summer.”  Hells Kitchen returns Thursday, June 10 at 8PM.  Look after the break for the full schedule.

Rapper is coming to The Cleveland Show as “Kenny West”

The fine folks at EW got an exclusive sneek peek at the upcoming May 2 episode of The Cleveland Show.  In it rapper Kanye West “voices a 19-year-old local hero named, er, Kenny West, who gets into a lopsided rhyme battle with the show’s Cleveland Brown, Jr. over the affections of a young woman who’s voiced by Taraji P. Henson.”  According to show co-creator Rich Appel working with West was an absolute pleasure and he expects Kenny West to “become a recurring character in our universe.”  In fact, they’ve already planned to have West return in a season 2 episode.

The Cleveland Show airs Sundays at 8PM on FOX.

FOX picks up Fringe for a third season

What’s that you’re pointing at, Walter?  Is the parallel universe telling you something?  FOX decided to renew Fringe for a third season, huh?  YES!

Despite the recent drop in ratings due to its competitive Thursday night time slot, FOX is reassuring its rabid fans that Fringe will return next fall for a third season.  Fringe proved itself a worthy contender this season when its audience numbers were up on nights when its competition (CSI, Grey’s Anatomy) aired repeats.  Along with a good amount of DVR recordings, what this proves is that Fringe still has a strong viewership; it’s just that it isn’t priority number one against other high profile shows.  The renewal comes at a good time; Fringe is on hiatus right now, so the guarantee of another season puts the writers in a comfortable position; they can plan ahead and not worry about the fear of wrapping story lines up too quickly.

Fringe returns with all new episodes Thursday, April 1 on FOX.

Jack Bauer set to wield the Apple Tablet in upcoming episode

According to Rodney Charters, director of photography on 24, the show will try its best to somehow incorporate Apple’s still unannounced tablet device, pending Apple’s cooperation.  Charters tweets: “Hmmmm looks like we may get an iSlate into Jacks hands for Ep 20 getting giddy with excitement” and later updated with: “Got a bit too excited probably more likely Episode 22 but Apple provided fingers crossed.”

As exciting as this proposition sounds, it all hinges upon the actual existence of such a tablet.  We will know by tomorrow.  Oh, and it better be announced.  Because if it isn’t, you can be sure Jack will stationed outside the keynote doors waiting to interrogate Jobs (re-created for visual purposes above).
