Vitrahaus is a ‘pile of houses’

Take a long gander at the Vitrahaus, a house-upon-a-house designed by architects Herzog and de Meuron.  DesignBoom’s got the scoop:

The five-storey structure is comprised of 12 ‘houses’ – five houses are set at the base in which seven other houses are stacked upon one another.  Each of the structural volumes appear as if they have been shaped by an extrusion press and are cantilevered up to 15 metres in some places.  The floor slabs intersect the underlying gables, resulting in a three-dimensional assemblage or ‘pile of houses’.

Located between the border of Switzerland and Germany at Weil am Rhein, the Vitrahaus resides as a presentation space for Vitra, a Swiss furniture manufacturer.  To no surprise, the interior of the home is just as flat-out spectacular as the exterior.  It oozes modern and minimalistic curves and other unconventionalities.  Definitely worth a look in the galleries below.

House spin-off is still a possibility

For some time now rumors have swirled that House‘s Michael Weston (Lucas Douglas, the private detective who’s now lovey dovey with Cuddy) would star in a House spin-off series backed by Houseexecutive producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs.  Time had passed and with no word about such a spin-off I had all but lost hope.  But then this–FOX network president Kevin Reilly spoke with EW’s Ausiello and today reports that the spin-off idea is not dead.  In fact, the concept of another show helmed by Shore and Jacobs is very well alive.  Right now they have a “standing offer” to create a new FOX series for the 9PM time-slot.  Says Reilly: “It could be a direct spin-off or a completely new show.  Ideally, I would love David and Katie to have their own [two-hour block].”  When asked about the Lucas Douglas spin-off idea Reilly noted, “…they kind of stuck their toe in the water and just didn’t feel like it worked. The [character] worked [on] House, but [he] didn’t really work as [his] own thing.”  He also added, “They have really high standards.  These are not guys who commercially are going to chase something just to announce they have a spin-off and then figure out the show later on. They’re probably the most thorough producers… I’ve ever worked with.”

A House spin-off or a completely new Shore-Jacobs show?  I’d take either honestly.  They make a great team and I believe a new project, House-related or not, would strike gold yet again for FOX.  What say you?

Solar-powered ‘mobile lounge’ rocks my world

The MercuryHouseOne, designed by Architecture and Vision, is built from Carrara marble and the rooftop is fitted with solar panels to power the interior space.  This bubble home can be occupied as “a portable pavilion, an outdoors office, a room, or even an off-grid natural retreat.”  I can totally see myself using it as a “blogger’s pad,” a place to retreat when times get busy.  The roundess and space-age theme add to the modern touches that I have become accostomed to.  Well done, A & V, well done.  Additional images below.

Glass house has its pluses and minuses

Glass concept home.  Designed by Santambrogiomilano.

This home constructed from “extraclear” glass is a very modern beautiful residence that would make me feel relaxed and worried at the same time.  On one hand a completely transparent home can provide for a great viewing of the night’s starry sky; on the other, I would constantly be worried about breaking a piece of glass that could potentially shatter the entire structure into pieces.  Any way you look at it, this is one fine design by architectural group, Santambrogiomilano.

House on House; Hugh Laurie to direct upcoming episode

You may or may not know this but Hugh Laurie is the star and one of the producers of FOX’s House.  Laurie plans on adding to his resume the position of director.  He will direct this season’s 17th episode which airs on March 22.  Says executive producer Katie Jacobs: “Hugh has been there since day one through every single episode, so he’s phenomenally smart and his instincts are [impeccable].” “This is going to be great for morale, because there’s no one that the cast and crew and the writers want to work harder for than our leader.”  Though the plot is top-secret, Jacobs hints that “it’s not a traditional episode.”  Two words:  Can’t wait.

Microsoft employee bids $35,000 to tour boss’s (Bill Gates’) home

Microsoft holds an annual charity campaign.  When fall comes around MS “donates products, services, and experiences” for their elite employees to bid on.  It’s a yearly extravaganza when it comes to watching for the highest bid to tour of Bill Gates’ Lake Washington home.  Last year the winning bid was a measly $8,600.  One lucky Microsoft employee and a few of his friends will be taken on a personal tour of the Gates estate by Bill himself–in exchange for $35,000!  MS matches the donation too, so this philanthropic venture is whole-heartedly (very) good in nature.

Oh, what I’d do to go on a personal tour of Bill Gates’ home…  I bet there’s all kinds of insanely awesome gadgetry and futuristic, out-of-this-world stuff that would just make my tech heart melt.  For some reason I can imagine a Massive Dynamic feel to the place, with Melinda taking the place of Nina Sharp, of course.
