Showtime renews ‘Homeland’ for third season

On Monday Showtime renewed Homeland for a third season. Coming off a critically acclaimed first season and sweeping at the Emmys, the counterterrorism drama from Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa, and Gideon Raff continues to bring the intensity, suspense, and surprise. The renewal comes a day after the shocking plot twist that occurred in season two’s fourth episode “New Car Smell;” this episode ranks as the highest rated hour of Homeland garnering 1.75 million viewers.

Showtime president David Nevins on the 12-episode renewal: “The Emmy wins for Homeland have certainly set the stage for a great second season. The writers, cast and crew of Homeland continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful roller coaster ride, growing audiences week after week. We can’t wait for our viewers to experience what unfolds through the rest of season two. Our partners at Fox 21 have been tremendous, and we are thrilled to begin the planning for Homeland’s third season.”

Homeland airs Sunday nights at 10PM on Showtime.

TV reminder: ‘Homeland’ premieres tonight (9/30) at 10PM on Showtime

In season two of Homeland things pick up six months later; Brody’s in office and Carrie’s forgotten but feeling better. The critical darling recently scored multiple Emmys for Best Drama, Best Actor (Damian Lewis) and Best Actress (Claire Danes), so the stakes are high for this show to continue to produce creatively intense hours of politically and emotionally driven action and drama. In (showrunner) Howard Gordon (24) we trust.

Eye the season’s key art above (with the tagline “It hits home”), and check out an alternate pic after the break (with the tagline “The obsession continues”). And don’t forget we’ve been privy to two short Homeland teasers and one impactful trailer.

Homeland premieres tonight at 10PM on Showtime.

TV trailer: ‘Homeland’ season 2

Following two tantalizing teasers, Showtime has released a full-on trailer for the second season of its critically acclaimed drama Homeland. Carrie looks to be a lot more stable following her shock treatment at the end of the first season, and this time she’s going undercover as a brunette with brown eyes. She’s still popping pills, mind you, but now we know that without them she can’t do her job. What else? Saul is there for moral and professional support, and David Estes looks on with suspicion. On the other side Brody is still praying with the Qur’an in cahoots with the terrorist Abu Nazir, but it appears as if he’s still treading a fine line between acting as war hero and serving as a “turned” terrorist. In the meantime, Carrie and Virgil and his cousin are back at video surveilling Brody and the clip ends with a major twist: Carrie and Brody get back together again? All of this plays in front of a beautiful, haunting rendition of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” by Scala & Kolacny Brothers.

Homeland returns Sunday, September 30 on Showtime.

TV teaser: ‘Homeland’ season 2 [Update: new teaser]

For the sake of everyone who has yet to catch up on Showtime’s breakout drama Homeland, stop reading this and do not watch the teaser embedded above. If you have watched all 12 episodes that comprise season 1, Carrie on… (get it?)

Showtime has released this schizophrenic teaser to promote the second season of the critically acclaimed political drama Homeland starring the scene-stealer Claire Daines and the enigmatic Damian Lewis. When the season concluded, Carrie Mathison of the CIA stitched together Nicholas Brody’s “Issa” night terrors with the facts at hand; but before she could tell anyone her shock treatment began and her memories erased. Or were they? In the teaser above, Carrie stands in front of a barrage of images and sounds from season 1. Toward the end of the all-too-brief clip, she shuts her eyes, opens them and we hear, “You are a traitor and a terrorist and now it’s time to pay for that.” The promo is called “Look Again.”

Homeland returns Sunday, September 30 at 10PM on Showtime.

Update (8/7): Showtime has uploaded a second Homeland teaser; this one shows war vet-turned-politician Brody inching closer to the Vice President. He asks, “If everything you had was taken away and you had nothing left to lose, what lengths would you go to for the one idea that pulled you through?” Carrie, meanwhile, looks levelheaded and determined since we last saw her. Watch the 45 second clip after the break. Continue reading TV teaser: ‘Homeland’ season 2 [Update: new teaser]

Showtime renews dark, edgy new comedy ‘House of Lies’

This week Showtime renewed its entire Sunday night lineup that includes Shameless (renewed for a third season), Californication (sixth season), and the new dark comedy House of Lies (second season). “These three shows are clearly resonating with audiences as evidenced by their steady growth on Sunday nights,” said the premium cable network’s entertainment president David Nevins. “We are extremely pleased with the creative work being done by the casts, producers and writers – and I so appreciate that each of these series has such a clear and distinctive voice.”

I had a feeling House of Lies would resonate with viewers. The edgy comedy averages 3.98 million viewers each week. Screen actor Don Cheadle, the adorable and snarky Kristen Bell, and Parks and Rec‘s Ben Schwartz carry this comedy to bizarrely enjoyable heights. And lucky for you, it happens to be one of those shows you can jump right into; House of Lies airs Sunday nights at 10PM on Showtime.

This week in NEW TV: ‘The Firm’ & ‘House of Lies’

Last year I posted my Midseason TV PreviewThis time around I’m breaking that idea in pieces with a new kind of post called This week in NEW TV. Essentially they will serve as expanded versions of my usual TV RemindersThese posts will crop up through January and February as new TV shows premiere this winter. I will recommend new, buzz-worthy shows for you to watch. If you want a broader overview of all the new series airing on the big four networks, check out 2011-12 Upfronts coverage.

::SUNDAY::

The Firm — NBC — 9PM

NBC’s latest drama The Firm is based on the 1991 John Grisham novel of the same name. The show continues the story of attorney Mitchell McDeere and his family 10 years after the events of the book and film. (In 1993 Tom Cruise stared in an adaptation of the legal thriller.) On TV Josh Lucas (The Lincoln Lawyer) plays McDeere and it’s his intention to “homage Tom Cruise’s performance” from the movie rather than mimic it. The modern day McDeere will see that his past (as laid out in the movie) will come to haunt him. A brief summary: As a young associate, McDeere brought down the prestigious Memphis law firm of Bendini, Lambert & Locke, which operated as a front for the Chicago mob — and his life was never the same. After a difficult decade, which included a stay in the Federal Witness Protection program, Mitch and his family now emerge from isolation to reclaim their lives and their future — only to find that past dangers are still lurking and new threats are everywhere. It’s certainty not necessary for viewers to have seen the movie or read the book before watching the TV series, but those who are fans of the previous works should be anticipating this return to the trials and tribulations of Mitchell McDeere. Though I don’t exactly have the highest of hopes for it, I will be giving this legal drama a try. I do believe that next month’s Smash has a better chance at lifting the Peacock’s spirits out of the gutter. The 2-hour pilot airs tonight at 9PM and The Firm lands in its regular Thursday 10PM slot next week.

House of Lies — Showtime — 10PM

Here is another show premiering that is based on a book: Martin Kihn’s House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Then Tell You the Time. Shortened for obvious reasons, House of Lies is a dirty sexy black comedy set in the world of corporate management consulting and it follows a team of cut-throat business people who are willing to go extremes to make deals happen. Movie star Don Cheadle transitions to TV in the lead role, and he is surrounded by a cast of incredibly funny people. Veronica Mars’ Kristen Bell returns to TV at long last (her stint on Heroes was OK, I guess) and Ben Schwartz has brought his infectious sense of humor with him from Parks and Recreation. Josh Lawson, Dawn Olivieri (Heroes) and Richard Schiff (The West Wing) are also involved. It’s on Showtime so you know what that means: profanity will fly and nudity will define itself. The premise and cast alone, however, should draw you to at least watch the pilot.
