Disney unplugs from The Grid, scraps ‘Tron 3’

Sour news for Tron: Legacy fans: The Hollywood Reporter says that Disney is opting not to move forward with a threequel. In April 2009Legacy directer Joseph Kosinski shared his enthusiasm for making another Tron: “For us, the storytelling will be easier because we won’t be saddled with 28 years of backstory. From a technical standpoint, in order for it to be a Tron movie, we’re going to have to push the envelope.” Unfortunately, none of this will come to fruition.

Though Disney never technically greenlit a third Tron movie in the franchise that started in 1982, Kosinski had already broken a story and Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to reprise their roles. Additionally, THR reports that Disney was interested in bringing Jared Leto aboard for the new film, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman-turned-actor who’s starring in Warner Bros.’s Suicide Squad as The Joker. It even had a name, Tron: Ascension. But again, these dreams have sadly turned to dust.

So why did this project suddenly go dark? Disney has yet to comment on the matter, but sources speculate that it has to do with the company’s underperforming Tomorrowland. The live-action futuristic action-adventure flick, which reportedly cost $180 million to make, grossed a low $33 million at the US box office.

As a vocal fan of the polarizing Legacy, I am saddened to hear that Disney is no longer interested in the flashy franchise. The original Tron pushed the envelope beyond its technological limits in terms of special effects, and its 2010 sequel upped the ante with incredibly slick visuals and a memorable score produced by Daft Punk. There’s certainly more tales from The Grid to tell, and I’ll sit here patiently as Disney receives fan backlash and petitions to #SaveTron.

‘Tron: Legacy’ Light Cycle replica is fully-functional, beyond cool & ready for auction

Calling all Tron fans. Say what you will about the flashy sequel Tron: Legacy, but it’s hard to deny just how cool the flick is in the visual effects department. Perhaps the most bleeding cool thing from the movie is the modernized Light Cycle; see the original version here, and the updated model here. Now’s your chance to actually own a fully-functioning Light Cycle-inspired electric motorcycle. The Andrews Collection, a car collector, has completed production on the custom-made bike that entirely resembles the new Light Cycle as featured in Tron: Legacy. For all you moto enthusiasts out there, the bike features a 96 volt, direct-drive electric motor with lithium batteries and a computer-controlled throttle, rebound and compression damping with spring-preload front suspension and rigid rear suspension, and front and rear hydraulic brakes. It also sports a low seat height of 28.5 inches, making it easy to ride even at low speeds, says the Andrews family. The sleek replica is being prepared for an auction that will take place on May 2 and it’s expected to sell for anywhere between $25,000 and $40,000. Yep, that probably puts a damper on things for most of you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t fully take in the beauty that is this real-life Light Cycle.

Salivate in the gallery below, and just imagine how freakin’ rad it’d be to ride this thing around whilst blasting Tron: Legacy‘s Daft Punk soundtrack in the background. It’s fun to use your imagination!

Update (5/11): In case you were wondering, the Tron bike sold for $77,000. Crazy, huh? Perhaps for a die-hard Tron fan, maybe not so much.

TV trailer: ‘Tron: Uprising’ brings you back to The Grid

Can’t wait any longer for the Tron sequel to get off the ground? This should hold you over. This June Disney is going to introduce the sci-fi animated series Tron: Uprising to its Disney XD programming slate. The events in the show take place in between the original 1982 movie and the recent Tron: Legacy. The protagonist Beck is voiced by Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage),  Mandy Moore,  Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), Lance Henriksen (Aliens), and Tron‘s very own Bruce Boxleitner round out the stellar cast of voices. Tron: Legacy producer Sean Bailey is behind the series, along with Once Upon A Time and Lost‘s Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. If you’re a fan of the Tron universe, this 10-part animated series is a must-see.

‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski talks Blu-ray tweaks and sequel squeaks

In an interview with MTV News, Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski talked about the movie’s Blu-ray release, calling it the “definitive version” of the visually-splendid spectacle. Though he worked on the film for four years, Kosinski still held onto gripes concerning the soundtrack after sitting through the theatrical cut on premiere night.

“Around the release, it was really hard to watch it,” he admitted. “I couldn’t even sit through the premiere. I just saw all the things I wanted to fix. Luckily for the Blu-ray, I was able to go back to Skywalker in January and fix all those things in the mix that were bothering me. We have a whole re-mastered soundtrack for the Blu-ray.” He continued, “[The] visual effects I’m really happy with… But on the sound mix, I really felt like we needed another week and I finally got that time after release. It’s now the definitive version.”

When asked about sequel rumors he spilled that he’s on board and early conceptual stuff is being worked on as we speak. He goes so far as comparing the next Tron to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Check it:

“We’re working on the story right now. Now that we’ve got the backstory out of the way and we know this world and we know these characters, there’s a lot of freedom that comes with the next film. When you look at Empire Strikes Back or The Dark Knight, sequels that were able to take the stories and characters to whole new places because you’d done all the hard work ahead of time, that’s a really exciting thing. For now, I’ll just say it’s very exciting.” He continued, “For us, the storytelling will be easier because we won’t be saddled with 28 years of backstory. From a technical standpoint, in order for it to be a Tron movie, we’re going to have to push the envelope.”

This all sounds exciting to me. Pick up the definitive version of Tron: Legacy and head over to MTV News to read the complete interview; in it Kosinski also discusses the sheer amount of work that went into creating the demanding film and he also touches upon the decision to incorporate a young Jeff Bridges, calling digitized Clu “the most ambitious thing in our film.”

‘Tron: Legacy Reconfigured’ is Daft Punk’s soundtrack, remixed

This week Disney released a Tron: Legacy remix album containing remixes of the original movie tracks composed by Daft Punk. Though the electronic duo did not have a hand in putting together this re-release of sorts, many well-known artists contributed to it. The Glitch Mob’s fantastic remix of “Derezzed” is just one of the 15 tracks found on Reconfigured. Paul Oakenfold, The Crystal Method, Moby, Com Truise, and Pretty Lights also took turns at rehashing the original soundtrack. Full tracklist is after the break. Physical/digital copies available at those links. This remix album cannot come close to Daft Punk’s original creation, but for hardcore Tron and electronic dance club music fans this is something not to be glossed over.

In related Tron news, Tron: Legacy is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and a bajillion other formats. Get home release details here.

“Tron: The Next Day” forms a bridge between the two films

Miss Tron? Me too. The DVD & Blu-ray sets are coming soon and this week one of the three short films included in the upcoming home releases has found its way onto the Internet. The ten-and-a-half minute clip conveniently forms a bridge between the original 1982 film and the recent box office hit Tron: Legacy. This is something Disney should have released before the 3D flick came out because it provides Tron fans with key character background information that would’ve proved helpful before diving into the modern-day Grid. “Tron: The Next Day” tells the history of Encom after Kevin Flynn mysteriously disappears and the guerilla campaign “Flynn Lives” that follows shortly thereafter. It stars the film’s protagonist Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) and reunites the Grid’s creators Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and RAM (Dan Shor) in human form. For DVD bonus content the short boasts high production value (and not to mention a fantastic soundtrack provided by the ingenious duo Daft Punk). Whet your appetite now by watching “The Next Day” right now, and continue to anticipate the April 5 home release.

‘Tron: Legacy’ comes to Blu-ray April 5

The visually splendid, perfectly scored flick Tron: Legacy is yours to own on Blu-ray Tuesday, April 5, as is “TRON: The Original Classic Special Edition.” Disney’s been holding out on releasing the original Tron so that they could give it proper state-of-the-art digital restoration and enhanced high-definition sound it rightfully deserves. In addition to Blu-ray, Legacy will be released across various platforms including Blu-ray 3D, DVD, Digital Copy, Movie Download, and On-Demand. The BD release will boast 1080p visuals and 7.1 surround sound and pack in-depth bonus features on the making of the film. Disney is going to ship three Legacy bundles ranging from $40 to $80 in price. The motherload is a “5-disc 2-movie Blu-ray combo pack” that includes flick on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, Digital Copy, and the original, remastered Tron. Bonus features include the “Derezzed” Daft Punk music video and featurettes called “The Next Day: Flynn Lives Revealed,” “Launching the Legacy,” and “Disc Roars.” In addition, all Blu-ray packs will include Disney Second Screen support. The Second Screen companion application can be accessed on any Internet-connected device (iPad, laptop, etc.) and it allows you to explore the story behind the film while you’re watching it. For example, you can engage with elements including 360-degree vehicle turnarounds and interactive progression reels. Look after the break to see the full breakdown of every release bundle.

Oh, and there’s one more thing. Along with Legacy and the original Tron, Disney is also releasing TRON: Legacy RECONFIGURED, an album featuring 14 remixes of the original motion picture soundtrack scored by Daft Punk. Let’s just say April 5 is going to be a wonderful day.

Light Disc Lamp

“Ring” is a futuristic lamp created by Italian designer Loris Bottello and obviously inspired by the world of Tron.  It’s lit by bioluminescent polymers and its intensity can be adjusted by rotating the disc.  By design, the energy is transferred by brush contacts on the outer copper ring.  Aesthetics and functionality aid each other in this bold concept that I want by my bedside stat.

The sound of TRON: Legacy

By now everyone knows that Daft Punk created a stellar soundtrack for TRON: Legacy.  However, the digital world of The Grid couldn’t come alive without the intricate environmental and vehicular sounds produced by the film’s sound editors.  In this Sound for Film Profile, you will get a glimpse into how the editors mixed and matched artificial and natural sounds to supplement the fantastical landscapes.  Sound re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo, supervising sound editor Gwen Yates Whittle, and sound designer Steve Boeddeker are featured in this nine minute profile you don’t want to miss.  +1 for sweet behind-the-scenes action.

TRON: LEGACY in theatres now! (with impressions)

From Comic Con 2009 to the epic trailers to TRON NIGHT and everything in between, I think it’s safe to say that I haven’t anticipated a movie quite like this before.  Beyond the father-son story Tron: Legacy promises to tell, I am most excited for the visuals (standard and 3D) and the electric Daft Punk soundtrack.  The movie opens tonight (12/16) at midnight in select theatres, and it release wide tomorrow.  Go ahead and browse through all the Tron content, and I’ll be back later tonight (er, early tomorrow morning) with some impressions.

Impressions: It’s the eve of December 17 and I’m back with impressions.  If I had to use one word to describe TRON: Legacy: EPIC.  But now I’ll use some more words.  I had a fantastic time at the midnight opening of Tron. I saw it in IMAX 3D, and quite frankly that’s the way in which this movie is meant to be seen.  Before the movie starts, a message from director Joseph Kosinski informs viewers that the movie incorporates 2D and 3D movies and they vary depending on scene; the switch between both dimensions was done carefully and effectively.  This is precisely where I want to start: the visuals.  Tron looks phenomenal.  From start to finish you really get a sense of how much blood and sweat was put into the creation of The Grid.  Though there are some scenes located on Earth, the majority of the movie takes place in the digitized world that is The Grid.  Kosinski’s team has come a long way since their original Comic Con teaser.  Everything in The Grid certainly has an air of artificiality, but it is the way in which the team made everything come to life so vividly that most impressed me.  We the audience get to take it all in through the eyes of protagonist Sam Flynn, who is also experiencing his father’s creation for the first time.  It’s a foreign land that you quickly become accustomed to because it’s that damn cool. The disc wars, the lightcycle races, the hand-to-hand combat–it all comes to life spectacularly.

My impressions on the visuals cannot conclude without talking about Clu, aka “young Jeff Bridges.”  Kosinski’s masterful editors managed to create Kevin Flynn as he appeared in Tron almost thirty years ago using advanced CGI and performance capture technology.  I have to admit, there are some moments when Clu comes off as totally unnatural but I’m happy to report that for the most part he looks frighteningly real.  You watch Clu walk around, communicate with his minions, and show facial expressions and you want to think this is a 100% natural actor playing the part.  So long uncanny valley.

The next segment of praise must go to Daft Punk’s electrifying soundtrack.  Not only do you hear the tailor-made-for-this-movie music in virtually every scene, you also feel it.  And that is what makes the Tron-Daft Punk collaboration so special and exciting.  The French duo created a powerful soundtrack that matches up with the movie’s scenes (my favorite is “Derezzed” in the bar action sequence), and it helps to fully immerse you into the Tron universe.  The thumping bass from the playful, fast-paced video gamey tunes goes hand in hand with the nuanced ambient noises that come from various aircraft, vehicles, and environments.  If you haven’t picked up the soundtrack yet (Amazon/iTunes), it’s the perfect stocking stuffer.

I must address the recent spat concerning the bad reviews and ratings from critics.  From what I’ve heard most of the critics are beating down the movie because its lack of respectable storytelling.  Some say the story is a flat-out disaster and that the acting isn’t believable.  I will be honest with you; Tron does not tell the greatest story ever told and some of the dialogue is definitely cheesy.  However, I would not so go far as to not recommend it due to these factors.  Everyone knows what to expect from Tron: spectacular visuals and a kick-ass soundtrack.  And the movie delivers 110% on both those fronts. When it comes to the story, I had no trouble swallowing the simplistic father-son tale that has critics in a tizzy.  I do think that the writers failed to provide enough emotional oompf to fully provoke audience reaction to some of the major on-screen events.  For example, when Sam finds his father (who he had not seen for many years) that “gripping” scene did not make me want to shed a tear; there just wasn’t a proper build up to the reunion.  So in sum if you’re a movie critic looking to pick apart a movie for its misdirections, I guess you won’t be falling in love with Tron, but at least you should allow yourself to enjoy the visuals and soundtrack.  On the other hand if you’re looking to have a fun time at the movies, Tron will make you squeal in excitement.  I gotta say, when the epic finale came around I was glued to the screen in anticipation.  Critics can bash all they want, but there’s no denying the pure epicness of that finale. And you know what?  I actually felt a good bit of emotional connection to the characters at the end, so there!

Hype is a funny thing; it can significantly sway your expectations and ultimate takeaways from a movie.  I’ve been looking forward to the release of Tron since I witnessed the early test footage at Comic Con.  And I am elated to share you with that the massive amount of anticipation has paid off, so to speak.  What kind of legacy does Tron leave behind?  A narrative one, perhaps not; but it unquestionably pushes forward quality in 3D (and standard 2D) filmmaking.

TRON: Legacy.  Highly recommended to all.  Go see it in IMAX 3D.  And now that I’ve seen it there’s two things for me to do next: listen to the soundtrack and see it again.
