(1) Medicom Toy is celebrating the collaboration between Tron: Legacy and legendary electric duo Daft Punk by producing the masked musicians in Kubrick and RAH (Real Action Hero) form.  They will release in late December as part of the Series 21 BE@RBRICK assortment ($4.99).  The 400% BE@RBRICK ($199.99) and KUBRICK ($19.99) two-packs will release in mid-January.  The RAH figures are expected to come out in April at $229.99 each.  All the Daft Punk-inspired toys will feature the same outfits and helmets the duo wears in the cameo they make in the film.

Look after the break for so much more Tron content. Continue reading This post is packed with TRON goodies including a music video, headphones, and a hotel room [Update: NSFW Playboy photoshoot]

Download 8-bit DJ Hero today!

OK now this is neat.  One Eric Ruth, retro games enthusiast, has created an 8-bit playable version of DJ Hero for the PC.  And the 70s and 80s mashups sound pretty incredible in chiptune form.  They include Ray Parker Jr’s “Ghostbusters”/Huey Lewis & the News’ “I Want A New Drug” (demonstrated in the video above) and Queen’s “We Will Rock You”/Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll” (see it in action after the break).  There are six mashups to play using keyboard keys.  And if I must be honest here, the NES-influenced remake is more addicting than Activision’s modern take.  Go on and download the game for free at Ruth’s website; there you’ll also find a “pixel force” edition of Left 4 Dead.

Update: Reader “laus_hel” has pointed out that the game is no longer available to download from Ruth’s website.  Bummer!  But there must be other ways of finding it…

Halloween costume of the year goes to ‘I am 8-Bit’

One Dan Liuzzi from Cleveland, Ohio “thought it would be funny to create a huge version of [his] own head and wear it” for Halloween this year.  So he decided to make an 8-bit version of his head and show it off on Halloween night.  This awesome piece of headgear likely provoked senses of awe instead of screams, however.  It’s made from insulation foam, joint compound, a cardboard box, glue, some gesso spray, and acrylic paint; that snazzy tie was purchased at ThinkGeek.  It took around 2-3 weeks to complete and Liuzzi calls it “pretty amatuer stuff.”  Can’t wait to see what he thinks up next!  Perhaps one day he may fully realize the 8-Bitinator 2000.  Look in the gallery below for more angles.

Cee-Lo’s “F–k You” rings true in 8-bit style

Brendan Becker, aka InversePhase, is just like the rest of us.  He listened to Cee-Lo Green’s insanely catchy tune “F–K You” and couldn’t get it out of his head.  What makes him different, however, is his innate ability to transform the track into 8-bit bliss and come up with all new lyrics that follows the rocky relationship between the aging NES and fashionable Sega Genesis during the late 1980s.  The original song features Cee-Lo cursing out a girl who left him for a richer man; here it’s Nintendo gettin’ a little sumpthin’ off its chest.

Jump into interactive 8-Bit Glee

Glee just got 8-bit’d.  From The Station and Doctor Octoroc, the guy who brought us Dr. Horrible in 8-bits, comes a new YouTube interactive game starring your favorite Glee club New Directions.  You’ll recognize the music, the characters, and the locations in this Pokemon-style video collection.  Once you watch this first video all the way through, you will be prompted at the end to choose where to go next.  Mash play and give it a go!

Gary steps into the 8-Bitinator 2000, comes out a better man

In an attempt to promote their laptop line, Toshiba imagined a new marketing campaign focusing on a character named Gary.  In the extended commercial, lab assistant Gary gets “deresolutionized” into glorious 8-bit form after journeying inside the 8-Bitinator 2000.  The best part of the commercial is the fact the 8-bit costume is not a CGI animation; it’s a suit made from over 3,000 hand-cut foam boxes.  After a viewing I find myself pining for an 8-bit version of myself; a Toshiba laptop–not so much.

Video games invade our world again in “Gnarcade”

Check out Mike Benson’s “Gnarcade”, a world where classic video game characters and obstacles interact with pro athletes.  Pacman, Frogger, and baddies from Super Mario make memorable appearences.  But it’s the Portal effect at 2:21 that gets me every time.  Beats are provided by Ground Up.  Enjoy!  (I say “again” in the post title in reference to the awesome NYC pixel takeover.)

Pixels take over NYC in visually spectacular fashion

PIXELS, produced by Patrick Jean at OneMoreProd.

This video is really making the rounds all over the Internet.  And deservedly so.  In PIXELS, New York City gets taken over by 8-bit pixels that come in the form of classic retro video games like Pacman, Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong.  The amazing visual effects combined with Naïve New Beaters “L.A. trumpets” music makes PIXELS one of the coolest animated videos I’ve seen in a while.

Dr. Horrible shines in 8-bits [Update: Acts 1, 2 & 3 are up!]

Calling all Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog fans!  Graphic designer Doctor Octoroc has put together the story of Dr. Horrible in old school 8-bit fashion.  He calls it “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Game” and it plays out like an old Pokeman Nintendo GameBoy game.  Says the good doctor: “All music, sound effects, graphics and animation were created by me as a tribute to Dr. Horrible (Joss Whedon) and the NES.”  This really is a must-watch if you’re into the story and music of Dr. Horrible.  It’s quite brilliant, actually.
