WE ARE THE WORLD

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) “We Are The World 25 For Haiti”, in which  [Quincy] Jones and [Lionel]Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti.  Director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) filmed the recording.

This 2010 version of “We Are The World” features over 80 artists and performers.  And they all rocked it.  Question is, how does it compare to the original 1985 recording?  They they differ in artist makeup they share the same goal–to raise awareness about a major global disaster that needs support from all of us.  In 1985, Richie and Michael Jackson wrote the song to bring attention to famine and disease in Africa; this time it was made to rally the world to give a helping hand to Haiti that suffered many casualties and was left in ruins after a massive earthquake.  If you haven’t done so already, donate what you can to a Haiti relief fund.  You can download the song and video for “We Are The World 25 for Haiti” on iTunes.  Look after the break for two videos that feature interviews with some of the participating atists.

Remembering MJ

Watch this posthumous music video for Michael Jackson’s “This Is It.”  It’s a Spike Lee joint, so don’t miss out.  It highlights MJ’s journey from childhood to worldwide fame.  Instead of mourning the loss celebrate the inspiration that MJ brought to us all.  Director Spike Lee did not have any footage of MJ singing this song for the video, and he did a great job of putting together a thoughtful and touching remembrance piece.  Enjoy.

Michael Jackson, King of Pop (1958-2009)

Michael Jackson is a true icon.  He revolutionized music, dance, and soul.  He questioned the status quo and forever changed the landscape of the music industry.  His unique vocal style and choreography brought us great music, slick dance moves, and entertaining tours and music videos.  “Jackson was an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the tools to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and loads of sheer star power.”  Thriller (1982) is the best selling album of all time, having sold between 100 and 109 million copies worldwide.  Some of my favorite MJ songs are found on Thriller.  They include Beat It, Billie Jean, and Thriller.  Although it scared the heck out of me as a youngster, the epic music video for Thriller is one that is so influencial, and I will never forget it.  I am a big fan of all genres of music, and we have MJ to thank for pushing the industry in the right direction.  People can say what they will about MJ, but let it be known than I will always remember Michael as the young star of the Jackson Five singing his ABCs, moonwalking his way to fame.

RIP Michael Jackson, King of Pop.
