Sci-fi thrillers ‘The Prototype’ & ‘The Gate’ aim to please genre fans

First up is The Prototype. It’s a film from the the Bandito Brothers, the studio behind this year’s U.S. Navy SEALs movie Act of Valor. According to Deadline, the sci-fi action thriller was put together with a low budget under $40 million. Andrew Will serves as writer and director. Since there’s no official synopsis out yet (the film is still being shopped around to distributors), there is only so much we can glean from the impressive, extended trailer that’s embedded above. The notion of Singularity is tackled as we follow a superhuman (half human, half machine) on the run from special ops. Expect to hear more about this project as we enter 2013, the year in which man becomes machine as they trailer teases.

Now jump after the break to learn about another intriguing sci-fier, The Gate.

Director Matt Westrup and producer Spencer Friend collaborated to make this short film called The Gate. It’s lived on the Internet for almost seven months now and during this time Wayfare Entertainment decided to back it financially to help turn it into a feature film destined for theatres. Westrup will be able to broaden his vision as director, and Friend will also return to produce alongside Wayfare’s Ben Browning and Sarah Shepard, according to Deadline.

Said Westrup: “Our plan for The Gate was to always expand and build upon the world that I conceived for the 11 minute short. Wayfare Entertainment shares our vision in taking those themes and ideas, and adapting them into a sci-fi thriller that is driven by a grounded, sophisticated plot and intriguing character arcs.”

Added Wayfare’s Browning: “We’re always looking for intelligent genre films filled with spectacle. The Gate is a daring and original work that is a perfect addition to our slate.”

The short shows the scary ramifications when pharmaceutical drugs are not monitored effectively. In this case, humans morph into mutant life forms. Count me in. No release date has been set for the theatrical telling; currently Westrup and company are looking for a screenwriter to help expand the film.
