Movie trailer round-up: ‘Pain & Gain’, ‘The Great Gatsby’ & ‘The Smurfs 2’ [Update: ‘This Is The End’ & ‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone’]

Before he could move onto the next Transformers movie, director Michael Bay called up Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to star in his upcoming action (comedy?) film Pain & Gain. In typical Michael Bay fashion you can expect lots of explosions and gags. A quick synopsis: “Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong.” The movie also stars Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub, and Ed Harris. It opens April 26, 2013.

This marks our second look at Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby. Antiquity meets modernity in this new trailer as the story–originally published in 1925–unravels with Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild” rumbling behind the visuals. The star-studded cast shines again here: Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway), Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan), Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan), Isla Fisher (Myrtle Wilson), Jason Clarke (George B. Wilson), Elizabeth Debicki (Jordan Baker), and Amitabh Bachchan (Meyer Wolfsheim). If you’re one of the few who haven’t read the book, the synopsis:

“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Originally slated to release the 25th of this month, The Great Gatsby‘s new firm release date is May 10, 2013. Check out some snazzy character posters in the gallery below.

Yep, the Smurfs are back in a new 3D adventure. This time around the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is out to harness the magical Smurf essence. He attempts to do so by creating two Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties; Vexy is voiced by Christina Ricci and J. B. Smoove lends his voice for Hackus. Other voice actors include Jonathan Winters, Katy Perr, Fred Armisen, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin, George Lopez, and John Oliver. Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, and Sofía Vergara reprise their live action roles.

The Smurfs 2 is out July 31, 2013. And if you think this is crazy, a script is already underway for a threequel due out in 2015.

Update (12/20): The day before the world ends a new trailer from Sony Pictures has surfaced for a movie called This Is The End. There’s a small bit of history behind the comedy/horror project starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel. In 2007 the comedic duo uploaded a video to YouTube titled “Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse” and it was meant to serve as a short about two guys surviving the “end of days” apocalypse together. Since then Jay and Seth have rounded up an ensemble team of comedic actors to star in a feature film influenced by the short. Rogen, Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, James Franco, and Danny McBride play a version of themselves in This Is The End. In an 2010 interview with i09, Baruchel said it’s his hope that the movie explores what happens to all the celebrities living in Los Angeles during the time of the apocalypse. He hopes that the project can bring aboard a smorgasbord of celebrity cameos to play themselves. Since then, Emma Watson, Jason Segel, and David Krumholtz have signed on. Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg (the writing team behind Superbad) are co-writing and directing the flick.

Rogen and Franco introduce this redband clip; they really hope that the world doesn’t end tomorrow since their movie doesn’t come out until Summer 2013. As you should suspect much hilarity ensues, so mash play and enjoy.

Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, and James Gandolfini headline a new comedy about aging magicians. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone goes something like this:

Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult followingsurges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act—both onstage and off—if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.

Opens March 15, 2013.
