Movie trailer round-up: ‘Man of Steel’ & ‘Pacific Rim’ behind-the-scenes featurettes, plus new looks at ‘Machete Kills’, ‘Monsters University’ & ‘Planes’

Before you dive into the trailers, check out these two behind-the-scenes featurettes for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel and Guillermo del Toro’s robots versus monsters action film Pacific Rim. “Our approach was not a comic book Superman; it was just to be a more realistic Superman, a Superman that exists in the real world,” says screenwriter David S. Goyer. The three-and-a-half minute Man of Steel clip includes some never before seen footage and you’ll hear from Goyer as well as Snyder, producer Deborah Snyder, production designer Alex McDowell, actress Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Russell Crow (Jor-El), and star Henry Cavill (Clark Kent). Man of Steel opens June 14.

Jump after the break to view the Pacific Rim featurette and this week’s selection of trailers.

Update (5/3): A lengthier Man of Steel behind-the-scenes featurette was uploaded to the Internets today; watch all 13 minutes of it after the break.

And here’s the promised Pacific Rim featurette. This one also goes behind-the-scenes to show the movie magic that powers the inside of the human-controlled robots that take on the menacing monsters (aka Kaiju) that emerge out of the ocean. “Every movie has to have a portion of analog practical effects to really convey the sense of physical reality of the film,” explains director Guillermo del Toro. Get a sense of what it was like for the actors to step inside a giant, 4-story high rig; del Toro likens the experience to a giant simulator you might find at an amusement park. Sounds fun, and maybe slightly dangerous! Pacific Rim opens July 12.

Danny Trejo is back as Machete, a deadly former Mexican Federale. Just as he’s about to be executed, the President of the United States (portrayed here by none other than Charlie Sheen, credited as Carlos Estevez) recruits him for a new mission. Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriquez reprise their roles from the 2010 original and a smorgasbord of more celebrity guests joins them: Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Antonio Banderas, Zoe Saldana, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Vanessa Hudgins, and Lady Gaga, just to name a few. Get ready for another bloody good time; Machete Kills September 13.

Here’s one more Monsters University trailer to watch before the Disney/Pixar sequel lands in theatres June 21.

Disney’s Cars in the sky Planes soars into theatres August 9. Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Teri Hatcher, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Cedric the Entertainer, Priyanka Chopra, and Gabriel Iglesias round out the star-studded voice cast.
