‘SNL’ sketch round-up: November 2, 2013

Last week Kerry Washington hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest Eminem. A rundown of my favorite sketches follows after the break.

Kerry’s Washington’s monologue wasn’t really all that funny, but as a dedicated Gladiator I cannot help but share this Scandal inspired bit.

Anyone could’ve guessed SNL would eventually parody Ylvis viral video “The Fox,” but perhaps not in this manner. Though even I think this could have been made funnier, Jay Pharaoh and Washington make a great pairing in a music video about a man “cheating” with other women on his phone. Mad props to Washington for going all out and pulling this parody off.

“Cartoon Catchphrase” might be my favorite sketch of the night. No, Washington wasn’t given much to do here, but Aidy Briant continues to shine this season with material that’s made just for her uniquely wacky approach to things.

Scandal fans discovered that Olivia Pope Kerry Washington can be really funny, but unfortunately SNL did not provide her with great material. She only makes a blip in “Career Week Speaker” and “Miss Universe,” but thankfully they are memorable as they are fleeting. (Cheers to Nasim Pedrad for her high energy in the former sketch!)

There’s a soft spot in my heart for everything Kate McKinnon brings to this show. Her eccentric characters and accents get me every time and Angela Merkel during Weekend Update is no exception. Her delivery is perfection.

Lastly there’s “Ice Cream,” the “bizarre” pre-recorded bit of the night saved for the very end. I am really enjoying these Kyle Mooney/Beck Bennett shorts. Like “Miley Sex Tape” and “Beer Pong” before it, it’s weird and awkward in the best sense of those words. Is Lorne grooming these two to become the leaders of the next Digital Short movement? I’d be more than happy for that to happen.

Yep, I’m also sharing Eminem’s first performance here too. Producer Rick Rubin joined Em on the stage to perform MMLP2‘s “Berzerk” and they absolutely killed it.

Lady Gaga pulls double duty as host and musical guest when SNL returns November 16.
