Google, Twitter and Facebook mark the highlights of 2014

As we close out the year, let’s journey back in time and explore the high points and the lows that made up the last 365 days. Google, Twitter, and Facebook gather our searches and publicly shared posts to make it super simple to do just that with dedicated portals, trending lists, and flashy videos. Let’s start with Google, as is tradition.

For 2014, Google is foregoing its “Zeitgeist” terminology for something simpler. The search giant is calling its retrospective portal “A Year in Search.” That’s got a nice ring to it. First, there’s the hopeful and inspirational video embedded above that summarizes the major events and discoveries that unfolded all around the world this year. And then there’s the Top Charts that show what we all searched for most across a myriad of categories including People, Cars, Beer, and Memes. Of course, it’s the top trending Searches of 2014 you’re likely most interested in knowing right off the bat and they are: Robin Williams, World Cup, Ebola, Maylaysia Airlines, Flappy Bird, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, ISIS, Ferguson, Frozen, and Ukraine.

For Twitter and Facebook’s stamp on history, jump after the break.

2014 is the year of the hashtag for Twitter. That’s how the social media king is handling its #YearOnTwitter portal this go around. The site features two main sections: Moments and Perspectives. In the former, you can view the most popular trending hashtags by month and by topics including Entertainment, News & Politics, and Sports. Major ones include #MarsOrbiter, #ComitLanding, #Oscars, #WorldCup, #Election2014, and #IVoted. You can glimpse a bunch of these in the quick video Twitter whipped together that’s posted above. The Perspective section lets you explore 18 celebrity accounts including their top 5 tweets and 5 related followers. In one fell swoop Twitter is sharing some of its most active and popular users and it’s helping you discover new and interesting people to follow.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Facebook’s retrospective isn’t all that different from Twitter’s and Google’s. The social network’s “Year in Review” interactive portal looks back at 2014 with a video (see above) and more top 10 trending lists. Its topics of the year include World Cup, Ebola Virus Outbreak, Elections in Brazil, Robin Williams, Ice Bucket Challenge, Conflict in Gaza, Malaysia Airlines, Super Bowl, Michael Brown / Ferguson, and Sochi Olympics. Other lists explore places, athletes, entertainers, games, and people we lost. Also, don’t forget about sharing your very own Year in Review; click that link to see your most popular posts and pictures and there you can customize and share your most memorable moments from 2014 with your friends.
