Trailer: Footloose

Reboot time! The 1984 classic Footloose is making a comeback with a brand new cast. Newcomer Kenny Wormald is ready to step into the big shoes once filled by a young Kevin Bacon to star as the rebellious Ren MacCormack. Country singer Julianne Hough plays the minister’s daughter Ariel, Dennis Quaid is her father, and Miles Teller is Ren’s friend Willard. Need a recap on the story? Here it is:

Ren MacCormack is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont’s local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister’s troubled daughter Ariel in the process.

Footloose is a timeless classic. Is a remake necessary? Probably not. But the music and dancing entwined in this love story is so fantastic that I wouldn’t mind watching it all over again in a slightly altered modern form. Dig the trailer above and get ready to snap in the aisles when Footloose circa 2011 hits theatres this October.

Trailer: Puss in Boots

DreamWorks Animation is readying its first Shrek spinoff franchise Puss In Boots. Antonio Banderas is back to lend his voice to the Zorro-like kitty. And I’ve got to say–this trailer is highly entertaining. Shrek got stale quick; lets hope that Puss and his gang of furry friends can reinvigorate the vibrant world inhabited by the green ogre. The film serves as a prequel, so the cast of characters haven’t met Shrek and Donkey just yet. Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis voice Puss’ friends Kitty Softpaws and Humpty Dumpty, respectively. Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris are Jack & Jill, the film’s antagonists.

Puss in Boots hits theatres in 3D on November 4, 2011.

Trailer 2: Captain America: The First Avenger

Check out this shiny new trailer for Marvel’s upcoming summer flick Captain America: The First Avenger. This one expands upon the original trailer, and it’s definitely more bad-ass. Again we get to watch a scrawny Steve Rogers transform into the super solider Captain America and this time we get a better look at Red Skull’s army HYDRA. As much as I enjoyed Thor and Green Lantern, Cap is going to blow those away. The First Avenger makes his way to the big screen July 22.

Trailer: The Muppets

It’s finally here. After rom-com and Green Lantern teasers and this, the first full-length real deal theatrical trailer for The Muppets has been released. Human stars Jason Segal and Amy Adams are joined by the entire Muppet cast (including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy) in this super fun trailer that’s filled to the brim with action, adventure, and…driving! Watch it above and look forward to the movie’s November 23 release date.

Super 8 in theatres now, get a glimpse of the creature here

The J.J. Abrams / Steven Spielberg production Super 8 is in theatres now. Leading up to the film’s release, Paramount has been adding snippets of video to this official website. On June 9, one day before the film hit theatres nationwide, the studio brought it all together and the final black-and-white video sits above. The “Full Editing Room Film” gives those anticipating Super 8 a small glimpse into the mystery behind the creature that lands in the small Ohio town the movie takes place in. If you’ve seen the movie already, you’d know that bits of this video are included in a pivotal scene.

I attended a midnight premiere screening of the movie, and without giving anyway away I will say this: Super 8 is a perfect summer movie filled with action and healthy doses of emotion & sci-fi. All of the kid actors nailed it, especially the young lead Joel Courtney. It’s truly a must-see. Whether or not it is a veiled Cloverfield prequel remains to be determined; I’d like to think it is. Also, beware of so much lens flares–alas, it is the Abrams touch (see Star Trek).

Teaser trailer: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Here’s our first look at the US remake of the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It’s based on the best-selling crime novel by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, which has already been turned into a feature film by Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev. David Fincher is helming the US version, and he’s partnered with Social Network composer Trent Reznor and Karen O (Where The Wild Things Are). In the same vein as The Social Network trailer (for that Fincher collaborated with the Scala and Kolacny Brothers to cover Radiohead’s “Creep”), Reznor and Karen O were commissioned to create an eerie reimagining of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” for the Dragon Tattoo trailer. Though there is no dialogue, the mysterious landscape is set for this three part tale of intrigue. Rooney Mara (The Social Network) stars as Lisbeth Salander alongside Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, and Stellan Skarsgård.

‘The Hobbit’ receives titles, release dates

Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth in his two part prequel The Hobbit. This week New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, and MGM announced the titles and release dates for the films. Part one is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and will be released on December 14, 2012; part two is The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and will be released the following year on December 13, 2013. Here’s our first official synopsis:

Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”  The adventure of “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Trailer: 50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in the upcoming film 50/50, an original story inspired by personal experiences. It’s a story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places when Gordon-Levitt’s character gets diagnosed with cancer. Says the synopsis, “50/50 draws its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminds us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.” Reiser penned the script, and co-star Seth Rogen explains the inspiration behind the movie:

“As shocking, sad, confusing and generally screwed up as it was; we couldn’t ignore that because we were so ill-equipped to deal with the situation, funny things kept happening. Will got better, and when he did, we thought the best way to pull something good out of the situation was to get him to write a screenplay. Ideally we wanted to make a film that would be as funny, sad, and hopefully as honest as the experience we went through. As soon as the script was completed, it quickly became a passion project for all of us. It helped us come to terms with Will’s struggle as well as our own experiences.”

50/50 comes to theatres September 30, 2011.
