Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon team up for another “History of Rap” mega-medley

To promote his upcoming new album The 20/20 Experience, the versatile Justin Timberlake visited Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for an entire week. So when Friday rolled around and viewers hadn’t seen a new installment of “History of Rap” yet you knew it had to be coming. And it did!! Fallon, Timberlake, and The Roots collaborated for a fourth time to span the history of rap to produce one entertaining medley that you never want to end. Before the performance begins, JT admits “But this is the last time…” and JF finishes his sentence “until the next time we do this” and then JT echoes that hopefully meaning that this in fact won’t be the final musical trip around the beat-driven genre.

And now, without further ado, I present “History of Rap Part 4.”

Kid Cudi outs new single “Immortal” as we near ‘Indicud’ release

On Friday at midnight Kid Cudi released the third single off his coming album Indicud for the world to hear. The track is called “Immortal” and in it Cudder forgets he’s a rapper and croons his way through a self-produced track that features a rock-ish vibe similar to what can be heard on his collection of songs found on his 2011 release WZRD. In the chorus he sings, “I am living my life as if I had powers/And tonight I feel immortal.” Clearly Cudi is high offa life on this track and the positive vibe is definitely infectious. However, if you were looking forward to hearing hard raps and rhymes you won’t find that here; but then again, I think it’s time we acknowledged that Cudder has evolved into a unique artist flaunting his ability to rap, sing, and rock a mean guitar.

In a tweet Kid Cudi revealed the production behind his new track. “Ok, so heres what I did. I took one of my favorite bands MGMT’s song “Congratulations“, put it in reverse, sped it up, and produced over it.” It works. So does the opening scream from Billy Madison‘s Adam Sandler.

Listen to “Immortal” below and anticipate Indicud‘s April 23 release.

Justin Timberlake & Jay-Z suit up for “Suit & Tie” music video

Justin Timberlake shows off the moves we’ve missed in a music video that’s all dressed up in black and white and directed by The Social Network helmer David Fincher for the Sexy Back singer’s latest single “Suit & Tie.” Rapper Jay-Z breaks out a smoking cigar for the occasion and makes a cameo, too.

JT’s third solo studio album The 20/20 Experience is due out March 19; preorder at iTunes today.

2013 Grammy winners: It’s all over the place!

There really wasn’t a single solitary winner at this year’s Grammys, which happened to feature some really great live performances. Gotye won the coveted Record of the Year award with his catchy ubiquitous tune “Somebody That I Used To Know”; Gotye and his featured artist Kimbra also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for this song. Mumford & Sons took home Album of the Year for their sophomore effort Babel; the group also won Best Long Form Music Video for “Big Easy Express.” Fun. also got some recognition as they beat out Frank Ocean to be named Best New Artist and their song “We Are Young” was crowned Song of the Year. An honorable mention goes to Skrillex who managed to scoop up three Grammys; his EP Bangarang was named Best Dance/Electronica Album, the track “Bangarang” won Best Dance Recording, and “Promises (Skrillex and Nero Remix)” won Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

Fall Out Boy reunites and delivers with new single, album and tour coming soon (music video inside)

For the first time since 2008’s admittedly awesome change-of-pace effort Folie à Deux, Fall Out Boy is reuniting for another record dubbed Save Rock and Roll. The lead single off their fifth studio album is the very wordy “My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up)” and I’m happy to report that it’s way different from their previous material. Not that their first few albums were bad, but they were able to successfully revitalize their brand by going in a new direction with Folie à Deux so it stands to chance that Save Rock and Roll will do the same in 2013. “Light Em Up” is indeed an eclectic track that borrows inspiration from hip hop, hair-metal, and the group’s roots in alternative punk/pop rock. It all layers on top of each other nicely; longtime FOB fans should accept it with arms wide open and newcomers to the once overly emo punk band will be surprised to hear something unexpected.

Listen to the track in a fiery music video featuring rapper 2 Chainz in appearance only after the break.

Download “Light Em Up” at iTunes today. Save Rock and Roll releases in a few months on May 6, the same day in 2003 when Fall Out Boy dropped their debut album Take This To Your Grave. They are also going on tour from May 14 to June 30; check out the dates on their site.

It’s been ten years, FOB fans. Are you excited to hear more? Continue reading Fall Out Boy reunites and delivers with new single, album and tour coming soon (music video inside)

Drake drops new single “Started From The Bottom” (music video inside)

October’s Very Own is back with a new single off his upcoming third studio album. “Started From The Bottom” stars Drake the Rapper since the majority of the track features the former Degrassi star laying down hard rhymes as opposed to his usual crooning abilities. It’s not as bouncy as his previous singles “Take Care” and “The Motto” but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Drizzy gets real in this track as he takes listeners on a journey through his rise to fame.

He took to his blog to formally introduce his latest cut to fans. “I am proud of every part of my past and I’m excited for this song to find a place in your life as well. I didn’t feel I needed any interviews or radio or press to launch this song. It felt right to come back to the site that I started on and release it to the people that started here with me. Judging by this post, the tour that we’ve been planning, the conversations about new songs and album artwork…I think it’s safe to say we’re back together again. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.”

Listen to “Started From The Bottom” here. Download it at iTunes. An accompanying music video hangs after the break.

Discover new music: DDFRx

This round you are being introduced to DDFRx (or Daily Dope Fix, and the Rx makes it a prescription “because you are guaranteed to become addicted to their sound” or so they say). The New York-based group consists of producers and rappers, namely beats maker Eric Ficocelli (who goes by the handle The Fics) and rappers Mike.M and R. Crooked Letter. Their latest creation “PAM,” produced by The Fics with creative direction from Corey Zaretsky (Beatstache), can be described as an electric fusion of dance music and hip hop. It’s got a flashy, positively schizophrenic beat that’s sprinkled with catchy samples provided by Kanye West’s “Mercy” and Trinidad James’ “All Gold Everything.” It’s the kind of music you’d want to hear at night clubs precisely when the night reaches that point of ecstasy.

Preview “PAM” in full below and download it for keeps at DDFRx’s SoundCloud page. There you will also find the group’s previously released track “Media Training” which features rhymes from Mike.M. Coming soon is a new Fics beat with Mike.M and R. Crooked Letter taking turns at the mic. As DDFRx continues to expand its exciting sound we’ll follow its steps.

SpeakSonic album reviews: Dropkick Murphys, Kidz Bop 23, 2013 Grammy Nominees & Destiny’s Child

Dropkick Murphys–the punk rock band who delivered the Celtic chant “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”–are back with their eighth studio album Signed and Seal in Blood and it’s more of what fans are used to hearing from them. It seems like Kidz Bop has been going on forever just like its cousin Now That’s What I Call Music… but that’s for a good reason: even in its 23rd incarnation it manages to sell extremely well as its young target demographic eats it up. The Grammys air tonight; why not sample some of this year’s nominees in the award show’s compilation album. Destiny’s Child is back with Love Songs, their own compilation of romantic tunes that features one brand new track “Nuclear.”

SpeakSonic delivers with this week’s bite-sized album reviews.

iTunes Store reaches 25 billion downloads

On February 6 Apple announced a new milestone for the company: more than 25 billion songs have been purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Store. That’s an incredible feat, one that the App Store hit right around this time last year. Phillip Lüpke from Germany was the lucky person who nabbed the 25 billionth track–“Monkey Drums” (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch–and won himself a €10,000 iTunes Gift Card courtesy of Apple.

“We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past 10 years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services. “Averaging over 15,000 songs downloaded per minute, the iTunes Store connects music fans with their favorite artists, including global sensations like Adele and Coldplay and new artists like The Lumineers, on a scale we never imagined possible.”

One wonders how long it will take until the Store surpasses 50 billion songs downloaded. Dubbed “the world’s most popular music store” I surmise the company will reach that goal sooner rather than later.

Andy Samberg made a surprise return to Saturday Night Live last weekend, and he brought with him his Lonely Island pals. Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer teamed up with host Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and NBC’s The Voice and musical guest and up-and-coming rapper Kendrick Lamar to cook up a new music video called “YOLO.” It’s some of their best work yet. Kid Cudi explores dark depths and paves a positive future in latest Complex spread

Scott Mescudi, better known by his stage name Kid Cudi, graces the cover of Complex Magazine for the sixth time in the zine’s February/March issue. His cover story conducted by Complex’s Director of Content Strategy Joe La Puma is available to read online, as are the stills from his photoshoot. Cudder is known to open himself up and provide candid responses in his Complex interviews and this most recent conversation doesn’t deviate from the norm. He’s all over the spectrum here; he discusses the depression that took place after he broke up with his girlfriend, popping prescription pills which didn’t take the pain away and only made it worse, seeing a therapist and realizing he had to cut the meds out of the picture entirely and get his mind right. He also went into how he’s dealing with the loss of his father at a young age and he talked about the controversy that came out of his public child custody case. He explained his definition of what it means to be “cool” and his take on the current state of hip-hop, he shared his disappointment on his lack of more contribution to Kanye’s Curel Summer record, and he expressed his general excitement over producing his own beats now. His fourth studio album Indicud is on track to drop this year, and Kid Cudi couldn’t be in a better place. Watch a peaceful Scott Mescudi introduce his next phase in music in a video embedded at the end of the interview.

Read the interview in full at ComplexUpdate: The zine has released more quotes that didn’t make it into the cover story interview. Cudder opens up about quitting weed, having creative control over his content, and he addresses head-on the Illuminati symbols he threw into his latest music video.
