Jane Lynch is hosting the Emmys!

Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Lynch of Glee fame will be hosting 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18 on FOX. I can’t wait to see how the conniving Sue Sylvester will handle the hosting duties. I smell a musical number… but could it possibly top last year’s Jimmy Fallon sensation of which Lynch was apart? Here are some bite-size quotes for you from important people and such concerning the news.

John Shaffner, Chairman and CEO, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences: “We’re delighted to have Jane Lynch host the Primetime Emmys this year. When our host has comedic, dramatic and musical talents – as Jane proved in last year’s opening number – we know it’s going to be fun for us and for the audience at home!”

Mark Burnett, executive producer: “Jane was my first – and only – choice as the host for this year’s Primetime Emmys, and I am glad she said ‘yes.’ She has incredible comedic timing, and is a charismatic, talented actress whose energy leaps off the screen and stage. I am thrilled and excited to have her as our host.”

Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company: “Jane Lynch is one of the most gifted and entertaining actresses in film and television today, and we are thrilled she will be hosting the Primetime Emmys on FOX. With her background in improvisation, her incredible comedic timing and a worldwide fan base that spans all ages, Jane is the perfect person to help us make this year’s show absolutely unforgettable.”

And here’s one from Lynch herself: “I am tickled pink to be hosting the Primetime Emmys on FOX. I’m looking forward to singing, dancing and sporting my finest tracksuit.”

TV Reminder: Childrens Hospital returns tonight at midnight on Adult Swim

The hilarious web series turned TV show Childrens Hospital returns tonight for its third season. And the whole gang of idiots is back! Creator Rob Corrdry reprises his role as Dr. Blake Downs, a clown who believes in the healing power of laughter. But as we learned last season, Childrens Hospital is in fact a show within a show, so these characters are actually playing “doctors” on the show. So for instance, Corrdry’s Dr. Blake Downs is really a man named Cutter Spindell. The same goes for the rest of the all-star cast: Ingrid Hagerstown is Dr. Valerie Flame (Malin Akerman), Dixie Peters is Dr. Cat Black (Lake Bell), Lynn Williams is Dr. Lola Spratt (Erinn Hayes), Just Falcon is Dr. Glenn Richie (Ken Marino), Rob Huebel is Dr. Owen Maestro (Rob Huebel), Lady Jane Bentick-Smith is Chief (Megan Mullally); and Fred Nunley is hospital administrator Sy Mittleman (Henry Winkler).

This series is more than a parody of Grey’s Anatomy-type shows. It completely does away with episode continuity and this makes for an off-the-walls, truly organic laugh-fest every week. In an interview with IGN, Erinn Hayes explains it. “We don’t have any regard for episode to episode continuity,” she says. “There’s a chart somewhere in the production offices that shows who is having a relationship with who in a particular episode so they don’t have too many of the same pairings. They don’t want repeats.” Co-star Rob Huebel adds, “We have no continuity. One episode I’m dating one girl and the next episode I’m married to someone else. There’s no continuity at all so we don’t care about that. The only thing we really care about is that it’s funny.” And forget about medical training. Hayes continues, “This season there have been two scenes where we have to actually look like we’re trying to save someone’s life and we just have no idea what to do. There’s not even a hint of reality. All we knew how to do was check his pulse and say ‘we’re losing him.'”

The 14-episode third season of Childrens Hospital premieres tonight at midnight on Adult Swim. The uninterrupted 15 minute episode is titled “Run, Dr. Lola Spratt, Run” and is about a kid getting stuck in quicksand; watch out for guest stars Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Lisa Edelstein (House). See images from the ep below, and watch a preview after the break. New episodes will air every Thursday at midnight. And if you missed the first two seasons, they’re now available on DVD.

Teaser trailer: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Here’s our first look at the US remake of the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It’s based on the best-selling crime novel by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, which has already been turned into a feature film by Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev. David Fincher is helming the US version, and he’s partnered with Social Network composer Trent Reznor and Karen O (Where The Wild Things Are). In the same vein as The Social Network trailer (for that Fincher collaborated with the Scala and Kolacny Brothers to cover Radiohead’s “Creep”), Reznor and Karen O were commissioned to create an eerie reimagining of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” for the Dragon Tattoo trailer. Though there is no dialogue, the mysterious landscape is set for this three part tale of intrigue. Rooney Mara (The Social Network) stars as Lisbeth Salander alongside Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, and Stellan Skarsgård.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo releases wide December 21, 2011.

‘The Hobbit’ receives titles, release dates

Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth in his two part prequel The Hobbit. This week New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, and MGM announced the titles and release dates for the films. Here’s our first official synopsis:

Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”  The adventure of “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Playing For Change is back

By filming and recording dozens of musicians from around the world, filmmaker, producer and PFC founder, Mark Johnson captures stunning musical collaborations that seamlessly blend diverse styles of music into powerful performances, expanding on the journey that made Playing For Change one of 2009’s most unusual cultural phenomenons.

And that it was. The culturally-infused rendition of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” still remains one of my favorites music videos of all time. And this version of “Gimme Shelter” is next in line. As you may already know, “Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music.” Support the cause and purchase the brand new PFC collection. Playing For Change 2: Songs Around the World contains 10 tracks consisting of covers and original songs plus 10 music videos. And if you still haven’t introduced yourself to this phenomenal worldly mix, make sure to check out the original collection too.

Music video: Kid Cudi – “Marijuana”

This latest video from the lonely stoner is a cut off his sophomore record Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. “Marijuana” was directed, shot and edited by Transformers star Shia LaBeouf and produced by Lorenzo Eduardo. Tour Amsterdam with Cudi and his crew in the video floating above. And remember kids, despite how cool Cudder makes it all look, smoking is bad for you.

Update: Cudi updated his fans concerning the “MANIAC” short film. On his Tumblr he shared, “MANIAC is a short film inspired by the song. It is not a music video and it has no reference to the song content. It will be scored by Dot and I as a film with all new music. Directed By Shia LaBeouf for Grassy Slope and Ragin4Dayz Productions.” A short teaser is embedded after the break; expect the short to hit the ‘Net this Halloween. Single: 2 Be Continuum – “Perfect Is The Word”

The debut single from Kid Cudi’s rock band 2 Be Continuum is here! Cudder has been teasing the track since yesterday on Twitter. First he warned his fans, “Tomorrow, be ready.” Next he hinted, “10pm, the debut.” And after a minor delay (“Delay delay!!! Workin on some last minute fixes, sorry to leave you guys in suspense all day but i gotta make sure everything is right first. Gimme a few. Update soon!!!”), he dropped a MediaFire link into his feed and “Perfect Is The Word” was let out into the wild. The lonely stoner introduced it like this: “KiD CuDi & Dot Da Genius “Perfect Is The Word”.” Formally known as Wizard, 2 Be Continuum is the spin-off band Cudi and friend/producer Dot Da Genius formed earlier this year. The track definitely sounds like it came from the same mind that created the Man on the Moon records, but you’ll notice more guitar and less rapping. Sample the first slice of wizardry below.

Trailer: 50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in the upcoming film 50/50, an original story inspired by personal experiences. It’s a story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places when Gordon-Levitt’s character gets diagnosed with cancer. Says the synopsis, “50/50 draws its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminds us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.” Reiser penned the script, and co-star Seth Rogen explains the inspiration behind the movie:

“As shocking, sad, confusing and generally screwed up as it was; we couldn’t ignore that because we were so ill-equipped to deal with the situation, funny things kept happening. Will got better, and when he did, we thought the best way to pull something good out of the situation was to get him to write a screenplay. Ideally we wanted to make a film that would be as funny, sad, and hopefully as honest as the experience we went through. As soon as the script was completed, it quickly became a passion project for all of us. It helped us come to terms with Will’s struggle as well as our own experiences.”

50/50 comes to theatres September 30, 2011.
