VEVO launches (fans of the music video, listen up)

What is Vevo?  It’s a destination provided by YouTube to find streaming music videos.  Though Vevo is being hailed as “an MTV for the digital age,” I agree with Vozick-Levinson at EW when he says it’s “more like Hulu for music videos.”  Sony, Universal, and EMI (where’s Warner Music Group at?) have teamed up to port all their artist’s music videos to Vevo.  The site sports a large, high-quality video player (with HD support coming next year) and contains an index of the latest music videos.  Take note that the current smorgasbord of videos is very limited; you’ll be hard-pressed to find older music videos, and forget about indie bands.  Though the selection is very sparse and sporadic at the moment, give Vevo some time to grow (it just launched yesterday).

Here are some additional details from the Vevo launch event: 85% of all music videos will go through Vevo, the rest will live on YouTube; Vevo includes synchronized and integrated lyrics; the player serves ads based on aggregate usage; Vevo will load any time you search for artists on YouTube; Vevo will be a destination for exclusive premieres, now including brand new videos from 50 Cent, Mary J Blige and Mariah Carey.

Why Vevo?  Three of the “big four” music labels believe that this new centralized location for music videos will result in ease for the user looking for music videos on the Internet, and, more importantly, high revenue from the slew of ads that play before (or dangle below) the majority of videos (again, think Hulu for music videos).  Will it work..for the customers and the labels?  Time will tell.  For now, check it out for yourself and see what it’s all about.

EW names “The College Dropout” album of the decade; Kanye blushes

Entertainment Weekly has named Kanye West’s “The College Dropout” album of the decade.  “The 2004 debut from West — a revolutionarily relatable rapper who also happened to be a beatmaking genius — was accepted into the hip-hop canon instantly, no diploma needed.”

West was quick to comment (in all caps, mind you) on this special occasion on his blog.  It’s pasted in its entirety after the break.

The following albums round out the top ten:

1. The College Dropout, Kanye West (2004)
2. The Blueprint, Jay-Z (2001)
3. Kid A, Radiohead (2000)
4. Stankonia, OutKast (2000)
5. Love And Theft, Bob Dylan (2001)
6. Home, The Dixie Chicks (2002)
7. Funeral, The Arcade Fire (2004)
8. I Am… Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé (2008)
9. FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin Timberlake, (2006)
10. You Are Free, Cat Power (2003)

Music video: OK Go: “WTF”

OK Go is jumping off the treadmill and into a strange new world with their lastest video titled, “WTF.”  It uses the same “datamashing” or compression artifact technology used in Kanye West’s “Welcome to Heartbreak” music video.  OK Go is expected to drop their next album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, this January.  “WTF” is available as a single on iTunes.

Music video: Shakira – Did It Again (Featuring Kid Cudi)

Sure, I’ve already posted the music video to Shakira’s “Did It Again” when it first came out.  But here’s a new version featuring Kid Cudi in the remix.  And look at it this way: this just gives you a reason to watch Shakira shake her hips and jump around on a bed again.  Win-win.

She Wolf is in stores now.

FIFA World Cup matches to be broadcast in 3D (read: not in America)

FIFA has teamed up with Sony to broadcast 25 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in high-definition in-your-face 3D.

FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke: “This propels the football fan into a whole new viewing dimension and marks the dawning of a new era in the broadcasting of sport.  We are proud that the FIFA World Cup can serve as a platform for advancing technology and the viewing experience, and are truly fortunate to have Sony as a partner in this endeavour.”

The 25 games will be broadcast live in the following cities around the world: London, Berlin, Mexico City, Paris, Rio De Janeiro, Rome, and Sydney.  I mean, who watches soccer in the US anyways, am I right?

Comcast merges with NBC, yielding yet another super conglomerate

General Electric, NBC Universal’s parent company, is no longer its controlling parental unit.  Comcast, the largest cable operator in the US, has officially merged with NBCU.  It owns 51% of NBCU compared to GE’s slightly lower sliver of 49%.

So how does this affect you?  Well it doesn’t, yet.  It will take at least one year for the merge to finalize.  However, though, it leaves this to ponder: Now a cable company owns a major network that reaches almost every US household.  This may seem unhealthy, right?  Look after the break for some ” merger nutrition facts” regarding this matter.  A lengthly press release follows.

What about everyone’s favorite TV show streaming site, Hulu?  How will that fare in the future?  Comcast COO Steve Burke: “NBC has been careful not to put too much cable content on the Internet. We think that’s a smart strategy… We think that going forward, you’re going to continue to have free broadcast stuff on Hulu, and cable stuff on TV Everywhere.”  There’s been word of “Hulu Premium” content that users will have to pay to watch, what of that?  “That’s certainly not in the cards.”  Oh, good.

Kid Cudi: Grammy nominations, upcoming album, Freestyle

Rapper Kid Cudi has received three Grammy nods: Best Rap Solo Performance for Day ‘n’ Nite; Best Rap Song for Day ‘n’ Nite; and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for Make Her Say (Featuring Common and Kanye West).  His freshman album Man on the Moon: The End of Day deserves album of the year, but that’s just me (and probably a whole lot of other people, but whatever).  Be sure to check out the 2010 Grammy Awards on January 31 at 8PM on CBS.

Kid Cudi recently sat down with MTV News and shared some information about his forthcoming sophomore album called Cudder:

Cudder, I already got five tracks locked in. We got Snoop, we got Pharrell. I just was in the studio with him. We got Jim Jonsin. I did a record with him. I’m gonna get back in the studio with him. Trying to get the right amount of hit records on this. It’s gonna be the complete opposite of what Man on the Moon was. Man on the Moon was so serious. This one is gonna be more playful and fun. It’s about having a good time.”

People reaching out to me wanting to collab is so bugged out.  I remember when nobody wanted to do any song with me, let alone listen to my sh–. It’s been humbling since Kanye reached out. People seek my creativity; that’s dope. I don’t do the normal sh–. I don’t make the normal songs. So when people reach out, that means they’re on the same frequency.”

Definitely looking forward to Cudder.  For now, though, Cudi wishes us happy holidays with a freshly cooked freestyle called “cudderisback.”  Stream it below and download it here.
