Recycled electronic junk combines to form intricate artwork

Jason Mecier is a mosaic portrait artist.  He uses all kinds of materials–including beans, food, and yarn–to recreate famous artwork and come up with his own machinations.  What grabbed my eye was his work with recycled electronic junk.  As you can see in the Conan O’Brien portrait above, Mecier used electronic circuit boards, cell phones, remote controls, and various cables to reimagine the “I’m with Coco” portrait as made famous by Mike Mitchell.  I’ve posted a handful of creative electronic junk collages in the gallery below, but be sure to check out Mecier’s vast gallery of artwork at his personal website.  Neat stuff.

Dania Ramirez graces this month’s Maxim

Dominican actress Dania Ramirez has had roles in The Sopranos and X-Men: The Last Stand, but you probably know her better as Maya from NBC’s Heroes and most recently Turtle’s squeeze Alex on Entourage.  Though she’s been featured in Maxim before, this is her first time gracing the cover with her stunning exotic beauty.  Enough words..I’m going to let you jump right to the spread.  Look below for two photo galleries.  The first includes pictures from this month’s cover shoot, the second contains images from her 2008 feature.  Bonus!  Check out the video below to go behind-the-scenes with Dania on her photoshoot.  Aaand, you’re welcome.

Game trailer: BioShock Infinite

Three years after the release of the original BioShock developer Irrational Games is back with a brand new game called BioShock Infinite.  Infinite (set in the year 1912) serves as a sequel to the 2007 critically acclaimed horror first-person shooter (which was set in the 1960s).  It takes the player out of the underwater city of Rapture and into a fantastical city-in-the-sky named Columbia.  You play as Booker DeWitt and your assignment is to find an abducted women Elizabeth and then work with her to escape Columbia.  As you can see in the trailer, the Big Daddies look, erm, a bit primitive.  (Update: It’s been confirmed that the machine with big hands is not a Big Daddy..then what the heck is it!?)  Lead designer Ken Levine explains that although Infinite is an extension of the BioShock franchise, the game clearly sets itself apart from the previous BioShock games; the environment is not the only difference.  Though he does not go into much detail about the gameplay specifics, you should head over to Joystiq to read (or watch) an informative interview with Levine.  BioShock Infinite plans to release sometime in 2012.  And I…can’t…wait.

Droid 2 drops tomorrow on VZW for $200 (R2-D2 edition coming soon)

Just when you started noticing age spots on the original Droid, Motorola decided to officially unveil Droid 2.  Though its large 3.7-inch multitouch display cannot out-match Droid X’s enourmous 4.1 inch screen, the Droid 2 does boast great specs.  The improved slideout QWERTY smartphone runs the latest build of Android OS (that’s 2.2 aka Froyo, for those of you counting), has a 5 megapixel camera, and comes preloaded with 8GB of onboard memory and packaged with an 8GB microSD card (expandable up to 32GB).  It supports Flash 10.1 for “access to the full web”, DNLA streaming, and Swype input for the on-screen keyboard.  If you choose to pay an extra $20/month the device becomes a 3G mobile hotspot with support for up to 5 devices over WiFi.  Droid 2 is up for preorder today and will be made available for purchase tomorrow August 12 for $199.99 with an obligatory new two-year contract on Verizon Wireless.  If your current VZW contract ends by December 31, 2010 you are eligible to upgrade to Droid 2 or any other VZW smartphone for that matter.

In the official PR posted after the break, Verizon and Motorola tease a limited edition “R2-D2 DROID 2” inspired by the iconic Star Wars Astromech Droid.  “The special version of the phone will feature exclusive Star Wars content and external hardware designed to look like the trusty Droid from the film saga.”  Expect the R2-D2 Droid to release this September.  It will only be available to purchase online.  View the teaser page here.

New Salvador Dalí mueseum is being constructed; he would have loved it

Architect companies HOK and Beck Group are currently designing a museum in St. Petersburg, Florida that will house the wonderfully surreal artwork of the great Salvador Dalí.  The mueseum’s director shares that it will “combines elements of the classical and the fantastical”, just as Dalí would have wanted it.  The spiral staircase you see above is described as a “structural tour-de-force, with the reinforced concrete spiral functioning as a tensioned spring held at ground level and at the third floor, with the stair treads cantilevered from the central spiral.”  Its design is influenced by Dalí’s fascination with DNA, the golden rectangle, and the Fibonacci series.  The organic, triangulated glass that houses a part of the museum represents a “contrast between the rational world of the conscious and the more intuitive, surprising natural world”, another one of Dalí’s infatuations.  The entire structure is enclosed in reinforced 18” thick concrete walls designed to protect everything valuable inside from destructive hurricanes.  The walls are so strong that they can resist a 165mph Category 5 hurricane, if one were to fly by.  Here’s quick rundown of archetectual specs: the museum covers 66,000 square feet, contains three floors, and its build budget is $30 million.  It’s expected to open to the public January 2011.

The magic of Photoshop time warps present day with WWII era

Holy frick (on a stick with a brick) this is spooky!  Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov has managed to combine old WWII era photographs with present day pictures to create a visual time portal.  Using simple but effective Photoshop techniques in tandem with perspective-matching images, Larenkov was able to blend war-torn Europe, including famous cities like Saint Petersburg and Leningrad, into what we consider normal, everyday life.  Above Georgy Zhukov of the Soviet Union glares into the camera standing on steps full of rubbish as tourists flock around him and his lieutenants, minding their own business.  The gallery below contains a bunch more enhanced images like this one, so check ’em out.  Want to see more?  Head over to Larenkov’s website and get sucked into a whole ‘nother dimension.

Concept: Space Invader couch

Peep this glorious couch inspired by the classic video game Space Invaders.  Designer Igor Chak has outdone himself with this latest creation.  The couch is all leather, features two glass surfaces, and is lined with memory foamed.  The black-on-white color scheme and the wild shapes and spaces are excellent design choices if you ask me.  I wish this were a real couch and not a mere concept…because I would have already ordered one by now.  Check out more images in the gallery below.

BlackBerry Torch slider QWERTY smartphone runs BlackBerry 6, hits AT&T August 12 for $199.99

On Tuesday RIM and AT&T formally announced the latest BlackBerry handset and it’s called the BlackBerry Torch.  It’s BB’s first slider smartphone, and it comes with a full QWERTY keyboard BB users are accustomed to.  Let’s run through the specs, shall we?  The Torch packs a 3.2″ (360 x 480) capacitive touch screen display,  5.0MP camera with flash, auto focus, image stabilization and geo-tagging, built-in GPS and 802.11n WiFi, quadband 3G radio, and 512MB of Flash memory with 4GB on-board and a microSD/SDHC memory card slot for additional storage (up to 32GB supported).  It measures 4.4″ x 2.4″ x 0.57″ when closed and 5.8″ x 2.4″ x 0.57″ when the slider keyboard is out.  Face buttons include start/end calls, main menu, back, and an optical trackpad.  The Torch will be the very first BB to run the just detailed BlackBerry 6 operating system.  This means it will include the fast Webkit browser (for which it was named after–RIM recently bought a company named Torch Mobile), integrated social feeds, a new multimedia experience, and universal search.  The phone will be made available to purchase on August 12 for $199.99 on a new two-year contract with AT&T at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, RadioShack, and AT&T stores.

The brand new form factor is extremely compelling.  It’s the new OS, which seems to be following the pack and not making its own strides, that I am worried about.  Look in the gallery below for press shots and after the break for the PR and two “launch videos”.

What is ‘The Event’?

I have no idea!  Sorry for the misleading post title there, but I couldn’t help myself.  No one knows what the actual “event” from NBC’s new fall program The Event is, but I’m sitting here at the edge of my seat waiting to find out.  Briefly introduce yourself to the upcoming conspiracy thriller with a quick synopsis and cloaked-in-mystery trailer.  Then check out the brand-spankin’ new character stills in the gallery below.  You will be aquainted with them on Monday, September 20 at 9PM on NBC.

Apple refreshes iMac, Mac Pro, Cinema Display; intros Magic Trackpad and Battery Charger

On Tuesday Apple refreshed their iMac and Mac Pro computers, pushed out a larger Cinema Display, and introduced a new input device for the iMac called Magic Trackpad.  Roundup time!

The new iMac family now features Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors and upgraded graphics cards from ATI.  The displays feature IPS technology (for better viewing angles) and the SD card slot now supports the SDXC format.  The two 27-inchers can be customized with an HDD and SSD (either can function as primary or secondary drive).  Available today.  Check out the lineup:

Trailer: Sucker Punch

From the mind of Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) comes Sucker Punch, an action-fantasy flick that features an ensemble female cast.  They include Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Carla Gugino.  To say this movie is going to be hot, steamy, and sexy is an understatement.  Now before you watch the epic trailer might want to find out what exactly this movie that Snyder calls “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns” is all about:

“Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll (Browning), who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution in Brattleboro, Vermont and while there she starts to imagine an alternate reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is captured by an unknown adversary. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.”

Porsche 918 Spyder super-hybrid concept gets the green light for production

I wasn’t so sure this day would come but here it is.  The gorgeous, green Porsche 918 Spyder is being upgraded from a concept model to production series.  The 918 Spyder made its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and made waves in the car industry due to its conventional hybrid nature.  It’s powered by a 500HP V8 engine and a pair of 109HP electric motors.  This hybrid powertrain promises to provide 78-mpg efficiency.  Note that these numbers match up with the Geneva concept model; they may change slightly when the production model makes its way to the dealership.  Release date and price has not been made official yet, but whispers say the green machine will cost around  €500,000 (or $650,000 USD).  If the car makes its way to the States, it will be eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit, if that helps any.  Look in the gallery below (warning: you may drool) and peek after the break for the official PR.
