Unboxing: LOST: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray] (images + video)

Are you the ultimate LOST fan?  I know I am, and that is why I purchased the LOST: The Complete Collection on Blu-ray.  Besides the 36 Blu-ray discs, the detailed and textured set is packed with tons of Lost related goodies including a “recovered Black Rock journal entry”, the senet board game complete with black and white stones, a replica image of the Island, and an exclusive episode guide.  This being a LOST package, it comes to little surprise that hidden easter eggs are aplenty.  The included ankh stores a “secret message from Jacob” and a Dharma branded black light torch can be used to search the set for clues.

Kid Cudi acknowledges his dark past and promises a brighter future in Complex cover story

In the October issue of Complex Magazine Kid Cudi opens up to his fans by journeying back to his not-so-distant dark past.  Beyond opening up about his heavy drug use, his night in jail, and the big reveal that he has a daughter, Cudder talks about his competition (or lack thereof), the meaning behind the tracks “REVOFEV”, “Wylin’ ‘Cause I’m Young”, “Erase Me”, and “Mr. Rager”, and the encompassing theme behind his upcoming second studio album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager (11/9).

On why he opted to create another dark album, instead of making a fun collab: “When I started making records like “Erase Me.” I wanted this album to be fun, but the dark sh– was my life at that time. I was fighting not to write that sh–. It got frustrating writing a collab album—I just lost interest, and it became more of a task, rather than something I wanted to do. That’s not how it’s supposed to feel. The day it becomes work, you need to retire.”

On MOTM2: “I want my sh– to be like you’re reading a novel, not a Dr. Seuss book. I felt like the last album was too short. This one is a little bit longer, it’s 18 tracks and counting. It’s just ten times better on all levels. The story’s deeper, darker, with no holding back. It’s beautiful, man. It’s an emotional album.”

Happy 15th Anniversary, PlayStation (part deux)

Remember way back on December 4, 2009 when we celebrated the 15th anniversary of PlayStation.  Well apparently that was celebrating the birth of the brand in Japan.  The original PlayStation console wasn’t introduced in North America until September 9, 1994.  So now we must celebrate the birth of PS in the US.  Do it by reading all these PlayStation fun facts (like did you know that seven percent of PS gamers won’t date non-gamers?) and browsing the PlayStation timeline that spans from the original console to the PlayStation Move in the gallery below.

Boxee Box: Internet video on your TV coming this November for $199

Today Boxee CEO Avner Ronen announced that the Boxee Box by D-Link will cost $199 when it releases this November.  But what is the Boxee Box, you ask?  Let me tell you.

The Internet is packed with tons of video.  There’s YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, and so on.  All of these portals host all kinds of video ranging from movies, TV shows, and user-generated content.  Some of these sites feature video in high definition (up to 1080p) and they look great on our desktop monitors and laptop displays.  Boxee’s aim is to bring the abundance of video found all over the Internet from your small computer screen to your large HDTV.  For years the Boxee software has been available to download for free on the PC, Mac, and Linux and for those who own Boxee-compatible hardware (ie. Apple TV).  After years of development, Boxee is almost ready to release the Boxee Box into the wild.  The hardware is collabortively made by Boxee and D-Link and the software is developed in-house by the Boxee team.  With the Boxee Box, the company is going to bring the ultimate Boxee experience to the living room–they are going to tailor the Internet for the TV 1080p, 5.1 surround sound style (where available).

In essence, the Boxee software aggregates video content from all over the Internet into one place, making it extremely simple to find a TV show, movie, or really any kind of streaming video that is available on the web.  The Boxee Box will feature a streamlined user interface to make accessing any streaming video on the ‘Net a snap.  For example, let’s say you want to watch an episode of ABC’s Modern Family.  You can search the keyboard “Modern Family” and Boxee will scour the Internet for all legal outlets that are streaming episodes from that show.  Thanks to the Boxee Box’s built-in Mozilla-based Webkit browser with Flash & HTML5 support, you will have access to so much content you won’t know where to start.  And the best part is that the Boxee service is f-r-e-e free!  Once you pay for the hardware, there are no additional costs, no subscription fees, no nothing.  Stream free video content from the Internet to your TV.  That’s it.  (Keep in mind that you can also stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, MLB.tv, and other paid content as long as you are a paying subscriber.)

Besides streaming video content from the Internet to your TV, the Boxee Box will also support social networking and all kinds of apps.  You can attach your Facebook and Twitter accounts to the Box to keep a tab on what your friends are watching and give recommendations.  (Boxee calls this the “first “social” media center”, get it?)  In the app center, you can download Internet-streaming applications like Pandora and MLB.tv and run them straight from Boxee.  You can take things one step further by wirelessly connecting the Boxee Box to your home network, enabling you to access “virtually any file type” from your computer (think pictures, music, video) to view on your HDTV.  If you can view it on your computer, chances are you can view it on your TV if you have the Boxee Box–get it?

Fringe cast photo, plus more premiere stills

Look what we’ve got here–more Fringe season 3 premiere stills!  And this time they contain strictly images of Alt-Olivia making her way around our universe.  Add these photos to the ongoing collection.  But before you jump into the stills that are waiting in the gallery below, go ahead and study the cast photo pasted above.  Some things I notice: the mysterious images we are left with at every commercial break lay on the floor amongst a brightly lit flashlight; the Observer peering through the doorway to the alternate universe; Astrid’s badass ‘tude; and Walter is not consuming a beverage!

Fringe premieres Thursday, September 23 at 9PM on FOX.

Betty White shines in Community premiere stills

Apple September event roundup: New iPods, iTunes 10, refreshed Apple TV, iOS4 updates

Today Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage to announce a new lineup of iPods, the next version of iTunes, and a refreshed Apple TV.  He also talked about the next two iOS4 software updates.  Let’s dive right into it, shall we?

iPod shuffle: The redesigned fourth generation iPod shuffle brings back the clickable front-facing ring buttons (play/pause, previous, next, volume up, volume down) and keeps VoiceOver control (it speaks artist and song name, multiple playlists, and battery status in 25 different languages) and the back clip.  It now supports playlists and Genius Mixes.  The tiny sqaure casing includes the on/off/play in order/shuffle switch, a VoiceOver button, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio and USB charging.  The battery holds up to 15 hours of audio playback.  The shuffle will be available in 5 different colors (grey, blue, green, orange, and pink).  A 2GB model will start shipping in one week for $49.

iPod nano: The redesigned sixth generation iPod nano does away with the click wheel and adds a 1.54 inch (240×240) multitouch display.  It adopts the tiny iPod shuffle aesthetic; it’s even got the built-in back clip.  It is 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter than the previous nano model.  To navigate around the iOS-like touch interface, swipe left and right to access different pages of icons, up and down to scroll through lists, double tap to zoom in on photos (there is no pinch-to-zoom), and tap to access other areas.  Any time you want to go back to the home screen simply tap and hold anywhere on the screen (there is no home button).  You can even rotate the screen using two fingers.  You can customize the pages of icons by touching and holding an icon down until it jiggles then dragging it to the desired position.  Everything here should be very familiar to iPhone and iPod touch users; it’s all just miniturized.  The home screen gives you access to playlists, now playing, artists, and Genius Mixes.  Also available is an FM radio, Nike+, a clock, Voice Memo, and access to Photos, Podcasts, Settings, and music categorized by song, album, genre, and composer.  The small enclosure includes a sleep/wake switch and volume up and down buttons on top and the 30-pin dock connector and 3.5mm headphone jack on bottom.  It also has a built-in accelerometer and supports VoiceOver in 29 different languages.  The battery holds up to 24 hours of audio playback.  The nano will be available in 7 different colors (grey, blue, green, orange, pink, charcoal, and Product (RED)).  8GB ($149) and 16GB ($179) models will start shipping in one week.

iPod touch: The fourth generation iPod touch gets even closer in design and functionality to its iPhone cousin.  The new touch features the same 3.5 inch (960×640) Retina Display, Apple A4 processor, back camera, and  front-facing camera, and three-axis gyro sensor as the iPhone 4.  The back camera shoots HD (720p, up to 30fps) video that can be edited on the device with simple trimming (included) or with more advanced editing (the $4.99 iMovie app now supports the iPod touch); it can also shoot stills.  The front-facing camera can shoot stills and supports FaceTime chats over WiFi with other iPod touches and iPhone 4s.  The external buttons and input/output holes remain the same: sleep/wake switch, volume up and volume down, the home button, 30-pin dock connector, 3.5mm headphone jack, build-in speaker and microphone.  802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, Nike+, accelerometer, ambient light sensor are still there as well.  The battery holds up to 40 hours of audio and 7 hours of video playback.  The touch will be available in polished aluminium on black only.  8GB ($229), 32GB ($299), and 64GB ($399) will start shipping in one week.

New Xbox 360 wireless controller features new D-pad, matte silver looks

Today Xbox’s Major Nelson showed off a newly designed Xbox 360 wireless controller.  Right off the bat you will notice the new color scheme.  The controller is now colored matte silver and the ABXY buttons have lost their vibrant colors (green, red, blue, yellow) to match the controller body.  The two analog sticks are slightly more concave now, too.  What you might not notice instantly in the pictures but you certainly will when the controller is in your hands is the brand new D-pad.  For years Xbox gamers have complained about the lack of a raised D-pad, but now this issue can be put to rest.  Microsoft has patented a “transforming D-pad”.  In the standard configuration the D-pad is a disc (that’s what we’re sued to).  With the new controller you can now twist the D-pad to raise the plus sign about a quarter-inch making it a whole lot more usable (especially for gamers who play boxing games where D-pad use is of the utmost importance).

The new controller will be available November 9 and will only be found inside the $64.99 Play & Charge Kit.  Microsoft has not stated if/when the new controller will replace the old model outside of the P&C Kit and whether or not it will ever be bundled in the new 250GB Xbox 360 package.  Look after the break to watch Major Nelson hold up the controller in all its gray glory.

Fringe season 3 cast & premiere stills

Walter.  Walternate.  Olivia.  Bolivia.  Our world.  Their world.  Whose side are we on?  Are we the good guys or the bad guys?  What is Walternate going to do with our Olivia?  How exactly is their Bolivia going to infiltrate our world without getting caught by Walter, Peter, and Astrid?  And what of that doomsday device?  So many questions linger from the amazing alternate world-traveling Fringe season 2 finale it’s hard to wrap your brain around all of it.  But fear not because the season 3 premiere is just around the corner and answers will come.  Check out these cast and season premiere stills (organized in the two galleries below) and let the anticipation and theorizing begin.
