CBS announces midseason schedule

CBS waited and waited, and now we finally have a better look at what’ll be on the dominantly procedural network come January 2011 and beyond.  First let’s take a look at program day and time shifts.  Freshman cop drama Blue Bloods is moving to Wednesday nights at 10PM on January 19; it will stay there for four weeks and eventually move back to its regular Friday 10PM slot on April 1.  After the network airs the series finale of Medium, freshman legal dramedy The Defenders will take over the Friday 8PM position starting February 4.  When Blue Bloods departs its four week run on Wednesday nights, the spinoff show Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior will assume the 10PM spot, immediately following 9PM’s Criminal Minds.  (As you can see, CBS is using the Tuesday night NCIS/NCIS:LA formula here.)  New midseason shows include: Live to Dance (premiering 1/19 at 9PM), Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (see above), Mad Love (2/21 at 8:30PM; Rules of Engagement moves to Thursdays 8:30PM replacing $#*! My Dad Says), Chaos (4/1 at 8PM; The Defenders season finale will have aired a week prior).  And don’t for get about the latest installment of Survivor: Redemption Island which begins 2/16 at 8PM.

Kelly Kahl, CBS Senior EVP primetime: “We’re in the fortunate position of having a schedule with many successful shows and very few holes. This allows us to be very targeted with our mid-season series.  These are moves that maintain the core stability of a successful schedule, while giving us multiple looks for the future at a few time periods.”

Look after the break to view the CBS midseason schedule.

Conan hires zany decorator Kenny Irwin, Jr. to pimp out his TBS set

Coco enlisted holiday decorator Kenny Irwin, Jr. to turn the late-night studio into the craziest Christmas-themed set I’ve ever seen.  You can say Irwin, Jr. imagined the most unique decorations made for television, ever since the history of storytelling began and humanity first came upon this world going back into the past and into the distant future at the same time.  Irwin, Jr. is a bit off his rocker, but that doesn’t take away from his decorative scheming genius.  Watch the interview between Conan and Irwin, Jr. above, then hop after the break to witness the unveiling.  Warning: Mr. and Mrs. SanMagnatron Claus might look a bit disfigured due to a massive microwave explosion.

G.O.O.D. Friday: Kanye West – “Christmas in Harlem” (Featuring Teyana Taylor & Cyhi Da Prynce)

After the release of “Chain Heavy” Kanye West put a stop to the G.O.O.D. Friday series and let his highly lauded album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy speak for itself.  Last Wednesday, however, a leaked version of a sweet holiday rap hit the ‘Net and marked the return of new Yeezy material since the release of the new album.  On Friday Kanye uploaded the mastered version of “Christmas in Harlem” to iTunes.  The upbeat track features Teyana Taylor on the catchy hook, one cheerful verse from ‘Ye, and special guest G.O.O.D. Music’s Cyhi Da Prynce.  Listen to the track below and download it at iTunes here.

[audio: Kanye West – Christmas In Harlem I.mp3]

Update: Shortly after the original song leaked, Kanye tweeted that another version would be let loose and this one features Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Vado, Pusha T, Big Sean, and Musiq Soulchild, along with Teyana Taylor and Cyhi. Listen to the extended cut after the break, and download it right here.  Notice ‘Ye has placed it in the G.O.O.D. Friday section of his website; this is likely the final GF track of the year, but it’s good to know he’s not through with doling out free music just yet.  He provided album art with it, and I’ve posted it beyond the break.  Happy holidays!

Augmented reality-based instant translation? There’s an app for that.

This has to be the coolest app made for the iPhone yet.  Word Lens uses augmented reality to instantly translate printed words from one language to another.  It’s simple: Hold up your phone’s camera to a sign containing foreign words and the app will convert it to your native tongue on-the-fly.  This terse explanation doesn’t do the app justice; you’ve gotta watch the demonstration above to get the full effect.

An app so powerful has to have limits, right?  Word Lens only supports Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish translation for now and it cannot read very stylized fonts, handwriting, or cursive.  The demonstration shows the app working quite flawlessly; realistically there will be times when conversions are not 100% accurate so the developer (Quest Visual) allows users to manually type in words to find translations.  But here’s a plus: the app does not rely on network or Internet connectivity to make translations happen.

Word Lens is available now as a free download in the App Store; however you must pay $4.99 for an in-app purchase language pack to get things started.  It’s compatible with iPhone 4, 3GS, and the latest gen iPod touch.

Rockstar uses MotionScan tech to bring video game realism to a new level

Rockstar is currently developing “a dark and violent detective thriller” video game set in the 1940s called L.A. Noire.  In addition to using motion-capture suits, the developers are utilizing a new kind of facial capture technology called MotionScan.  The suits capture character movements, and the MotionScan data “provides an unprecedented level of realism, detail, and emotion” to their facial expressions and reactions.  The game actors sit in a room surrounded by many cameras; they are dressed up for the part and speak their lines aloud as the cameras captured their facial movements from every angle imaginable.  All of this gets converted digitally and the result is a high resolution 3D model of the actor’s head.  Said result is impressively realistic and promises to make it easier to discern when an in-game character is lying; a major theme of the game is to detect when people are lying.  L.A. Noire is due out for Xbox 360 and PS3 next year.  For now, take a look at how the MotionScan tech creates the 3D models in the video above; this will certainly change the way games are made in the foreseeable future.

Trailer: Paul

The next movie from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost made waves at Comic Con last summer, and now the trailer for Paul is available for the public at large to enjoy.  The English comedy duo, whose recent outings include Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, enlisted Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) to direct.  The flick follows Pegg and Frost trekking across the America and what happens when they find an alien named Paul voiced by Seth Rogen.  It also stars Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, and Jane Lynch.  Paul hits theatres March 18, 2011.  (Want more Paul?  Here’s a short teaser.)

The sound of TRON: Legacy

By now everyone knows that Daft Punk created a stellar soundtrack for TRON: Legacy.  However, the digital world of The Grid couldn’t come alive without the intricate environmental and vehicular sounds produced by the film’s sound editors.  In this Sound for Film Profile, you will get a glimpse into how the editors mixed and matched artificial and natural sounds to supplement the fantastical landscapes.  Sound re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo, supervising sound editor Gwen Yates Whittle, and sound designer Steve Boeddeker are featured in this nine minute profile you don’t want to miss.  +1 for sweet behind-the-scenes action.

TRON: LEGACY in theatres now! (with impressions)

From Comic Con 2009 to the epic trailers to TRON NIGHT and everything in between, I think it’s safe to say that I haven’t anticipated a movie quite like this before.  Beyond the father-son story Tron: Legacy promises to tell, I am most excited for the visuals (standard and 3D) and the electric Daft Punk soundtrack.  The movie opens tonight (12/16) at midnight in select theatres, and it release wide tomorrow.  Go ahead and browse through all the Tron content, and I’ll be back later tonight (er, early tomorrow morning) with some impressions.

Impressions: It’s the eve of December 17 and I’m back with impressions.  If I had to use one word to describe TRON: Legacy: EPIC.  But now I’ll use some more words.  I had a fantastic time at the midnight opening of Tron. I saw it in IMAX 3D, and quite frankly that’s the way in which this movie is meant to be seen.  Before the movie starts, a message from director Joseph Kosinski informs viewers that the movie incorporates 2D and 3D movies and they vary depending on scene; the switch between both dimensions was done carefully and effectively.  This is precisely where I want to start: the visuals.  Tron looks phenomenal.  From start to finish you really get a sense of how much blood and sweat was put into the creation of The Grid.  Though there are some scenes located on Earth, the majority of the movie takes place in the digitized world that is The Grid.  Kosinski’s team has come a long way since their original Comic Con teaser.  Everything in The Grid certainly has an air of artificiality, but it is the way in which the team made everything come to life so vividly that most impressed me.  We the audience get to take it all in through the eyes of protagonist Sam Flynn, who is also experiencing his father’s creation for the first time.  It’s a foreign land that you quickly become accustomed to because it’s that damn cool. The disc wars, the lightcycle races, the hand-to-hand combat–it all comes to life spectacularly.

My impressions on the visuals cannot conclude without talking about Clu, aka “young Jeff Bridges.”  Kosinski’s masterful editors managed to create Kevin Flynn as he appeared in Tron almost thirty years ago using advanced CGI and performance capture technology.  I have to admit, there are some moments when Clu comes off as totally unnatural but I’m happy to report that for the most part he looks frighteningly real.  You watch Clu walk around, communicate with his minions, and show facial expressions and you want to think this is a 100% natural actor playing the part.  So long uncanny valley.

The next segment of praise must go to Daft Punk’s electrifying soundtrack.  Not only do you hear the tailor-made-for-this-movie music in virtually every scene, you also feel it.  And that is what makes the Tron-Daft Punk collaboration so special and exciting.  The French duo created a powerful soundtrack that matches up with the movie’s scenes (my favorite is “Derezzed” in the bar action sequence), and it helps to fully immerse you into the Tron universe.  The thumping bass from the playful, fast-paced video gamey tunes goes hand in hand with the nuanced ambient noises that come from various aircraft, vehicles, and environments.  If you haven’t picked up the soundtrack yet (Amazon/iTunes), it’s the perfect stocking stuffer.

I must address the recent spat concerning the bad reviews and ratings from critics.  From what I’ve heard most of the critics are beating down the movie because its lack of respectable storytelling.  Some say the story is a flat-out disaster and that the acting isn’t believable.  I will be honest with you; Tron does not tell the greatest story ever told and some of the dialogue is definitely cheesy.  However, I would not so go far as to not recommend it due to these factors.  Everyone knows what to expect from Tron: spectacular visuals and a kick-ass soundtrack.  And the movie delivers 110% on both those fronts. When it comes to the story, I had no trouble swallowing the simplistic father-son tale that has critics in a tizzy.  I do think that the writers failed to provide enough emotional oompf to fully provoke audience reaction to some of the major on-screen events.  For example, when Sam finds his father (who he had not seen for many years) that “gripping” scene did not make me want to shed a tear; there just wasn’t a proper build up to the reunion.  So in sum if you’re a movie critic looking to pick apart a movie for its misdirections, I guess you won’t be falling in love with Tron, but at least you should allow yourself to enjoy the visuals and soundtrack.  On the other hand if you’re looking to have a fun time at the movies, Tron will make you squeal in excitement.  I gotta say, when the epic finale came around I was glued to the screen in anticipation.  Critics can bash all they want, but there’s no denying the pure epicness of that finale. And you know what?  I actually felt a good bit of emotional connection to the characters at the end, so there!

Hype is a funny thing; it can significantly sway your expectations and ultimate takeaways from a movie.  I’ve been looking forward to the release of Tron since I witnessed the early test footage at Comic Con.  And I am elated to share you with that the massive amount of anticipation has paid off, so to speak.  What kind of legacy does Tron leave behind?  A narrative one, perhaps not; but it unquestionably pushes forward quality in 3D (and standard 2D) filmmaking.

TRON: Legacy.  Highly recommended to all.  Go see it in IMAX 3D.  And now that I’ve seen it there’s two things for me to do next: listen to the soundtrack and see it again.

2011 Golden Globe nods are in!

Are you ready to celebrate the best of the best in film and television?  The Golden Globe nods are in!  Let’s take a look at some of the television categories first.  The big five best drama contenders are Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Good Wife, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead.  I’m so glad the AMC zombie-fest got nominated!  The short but terrific six-episode arc deserves a major win like this at the show.  And how about the best actors in a drama series?  Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Hugh Laurie (House).  A nice bunch there, indeed.  The best comedy contenders are 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, The Big C, Glee, Modern Family, and Nurse Jackie.  I’m sure this will be a tight race between the FOX musical, the ABC hit, and the Jim Parsons-led comedy sensation.  Speaking of Parsons, let’s move onto best actors in a comedy series.  Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Thomas Jane (Hung), Matthew Morrison (Glee), and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory).  Parsons is likely the lock here, but congratulations to Glee‘s Will Schuester!  In other notable nods, Chris Colfer (Glee), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), and Scott Caan (Hawaii Five-O) are nominated for best supporting actor, and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and Jane Lynch (Glee) are up for best supporting actress.  Glee ended up being the most recognized show (Lea Michele was nominated best actress in a comedy!).

This is the space I usually save for my rant concerning the the snub of Fringe’s John Noble.  But you can refer to that in last year’s Globes nomination post.  Other notable TV snubs: Where’s the love for CommunityParks and Rec, and Raising Hope!?

Now let’s branch into the film categories.  Best picture, drama: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The King’s Speech, and The Social Network. This is certainly going to be a tight race.  A really tight race.  It’s hard to make a prediction here.  Best actor, drama: Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), James Franco (127 Hours), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine), and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter).  I gotta cheer on Mr. Eisenberg here for his fantastic take on TIME’s Person of the Year; he really gave his first riveting performance here that’s worthy of an award or two.  I could list the best actress category here, but we all know this one’s going to Natalie Portman for her amazing performance in Black Swan.  In other notable nods, Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) and Jeremy Renner (The Town) are nominated for best supporting actor, and Mila Kunis (Black Swan) is up for best supporting actress.  I think it’ll be an exciting race for best director between David Fincher (The Social Network), Christopher Nolan (Inception), and Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan).  And the same goes for best original score between Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network) and Hans Zimmer (Inception).  For best animated feature, Despicable Me or Toy Story 3.  Loved both, but the win will definitely go to the one starring Woody.

Movie snubs: Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception), armie hammer (The Social Network), True Grit.

Comedian Ricky Gervais will host (again!) the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards when it airs Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 8PM on NBC.  You know the drill: look after the break to browse all the nominations.

Trailer: Fast Five

The Fast and the Furious.  2 Fast 2 Furious.  Tokyo Drift.  Fast & Furious.  Now get ready for Fast Five.  That’s right people; Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are teaming up for yet another street racing film set in the Fast and the Furious universe that was born back in 2001.  The fifth installment is directed by Justin Lin (who directed the previous two) and features “returning all-stars from every chapter of the explosive franchise” including Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon, and Don Omar.  (No sign of Michelle Rodriquez’s Letty–what gives?  Perhaps she died in one of the many sequels?  I don’t know.)  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joins the ensemble cast as a federal agent attempting to capture former cop Brian O’Conner (Walker) and ex-con Dom Toretto (Diesel).  Looks fun to me.  Fast Five hits theatres April 29, 2011.

Jon Favreau steps away from Iron Man franchise

Sources confirm that Jon Favreau will not direct Iron Man 3.  But why?  Vulture broke the news and they speculate: A) Creative differences: Favreau is “frustrated with Marvel’s urge to stuff more of their in-house heroes into the next film in the wake of The Avengers.”  B) Financial reasons: Favreau is said to have made $10 million for the Iron Man 2 and a hefty raise would likely be necessary to keep him on board.  C) A mix of both A & B.  Vulture goes on to say that a source close to “Marvel’s playbook” think that “the company had been pushing a confusing and packed vision of the third film as a tactic to provoke Favreau into leaving the project.”  Whatever the reason, Favreau is out and apparently he left the team under amicable terms.  Shortly after this news hit the web he tweeted, “It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.”  Marvel is currently in the process of finding a new helmer, and it’s worthy to note that star Robert Downey Jr. has contractual approval over the director of the film so he’ll have a hand in the decision.  Iron Man 3 is still on track for a May 3, 2013.  Favreau is putting the final touches on Cowboys and Aliens and he’s still signed on as a producer for The Avengers.
