Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ gets you hooked on a feeling

Behold, the very first trailer for James Gunn’s Marvel superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy. The ragtag team of space misfits includes Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord),  Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, a raccoon named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (played by wrestler Dave Bautista), and a giant tree named Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). Quill is the main attraction in this first look at the flick; he steals a mysterious orb in the opening shots and there’s no denying an Indiana Jones vibe. Gunn, the man behind Slither and Super, feels at home here. It’s an epic adventure in space but the director isn’t taking it all too seriously. Though the trailer contains plenty of high stakes action, the majority of it is quite humorous and light in nature. It may turn out to be a very polarizing initial glimpse at Marvel’s (potentially) next big franchise, but in my opinion it really works. If there’s anything we learned from the Iron Man movies it’s that action plus humor equals success. Also, there’s a freaking gun-toting raccoon for Pete’s sake.

Guardians of the Galaxy releases August 1.

Update: Jump after the break to watch character vignettes focusing on each member of the GOTG. Though brief, you will catch glimpses of behind-the-scenes footage and in Rocket’s you get to see Bradley Cooper provide his voice! At the bottom of the page you’ll a new, cheeky poster, too. First look: Meet Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Here’s our first official look at Marvel’s upcoming superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy. From left to right there’s Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord), a raccoon named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (played by wrestler Dave Bautista), and a giant tree named Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). United as one they are the Guardians of the Galaxy, and under James Gunn’s direction they band together in theatres August 1, 2014. Also starring are Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael, and Benicio del Toro as The Collector.

In addition to this slick pic is the flick’s first official synopsis and it goes like this:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team–the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Paul Rudd suits up for ‘Ant-Man’

Paul Rudd is going from Anchorman to Ant-Man. From slappin’ da bass mon to Ant-Mon. I think you get it now: Marvel has hand-packed the oft-comedian to play their next superhero in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man releasing July 31, 2015. Though the film’s plot is being kept under wraps for now, Marvel comic book readers will know Ant-Man to be a “brilliant scientist who invented a substance that allowed him to change his size” from that of a giant beast to a minuscule ant. Marvel says casting Rudd “continu[es] the studio’s desire to cast actors that bring several dimensions to its onscreen heroes.”

Marvel head Kevin Fiege said this a press statement: “When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”

He will also serve as series showrunner and executive producer across all 13 episodes that are set to debut on the streaming service in 2015.

Disney & Netflix team up to produce four Marvel superhero series

If ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn’t enough for Marvel fans, The Walt Disney Co. and Netflix are collaborating on four live-action series to air on the streaming service beginning in 2015. Each series will star a popular Marvel superhero: the first hero coming to the small screen is Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage; click those links to learn more about each of them. A statement promises these four series will take Netflix subscribers “deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York.” Now get this: after the four, thirteen episodes series have aired they will culminate in “Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.” It’s like what Marvel did in the movies with all those films leading up to The Avenges. This is neat stuff right here.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix COO Ted Sarandos.  “With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

Marvel drops new ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ poster + trailer

Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the sequel The Winter Soldier. Above Cap looks ready to jump off a S.H.I.E.L.D. “bus” and into action. In my opinion the first film was the weakest in Marvel’s Phase One batch; thankfully the movie’s premiere trailer kicks things into high gear with some fantastic, big budget action sequences featuring lots of Cap, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson’s omnipresent Nick Fury. Joining the cast are Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, and Robert Redford as Agent Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. The latest synopsis follows.

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

Jump after the break to watch the new trailer. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is out April 14, 2014. Continue reading Marvel drops new ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ poster + trailer

‘Phineas and Ferb’ crossover events with Marvel & ‘Star Wars’ coming soon

Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk are teaming up with boy-geniuses Phineas and Ferb in a special Disney/Marvel crossover episode airing later this month. The official episode description goes like this:

In Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk stand powerless after being struck by Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s power-draining “inator.” Once the Marvel Super Villains – Red Skull, Whiplash, Venom and M.O.D.O.K. – find out that Dr. Doofenshmirtz is responsible for robbing the Super Heroes of their powers, they seek him out and together create mayhem in Danville. Meanwhile, Phineas and Ferb do everything they can to restore the Super Heroes’ powers before the evil villains take over the world.

At Comic Con 2013 in San Diego, Marvel packed Hall H to share with fans new footage from its upcoming slate of super hero flicks including Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. At the very end of the panel, surprise guest Joss Whedon took the stage to announce the title of his next Avengers movie and it is Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The nearly indestructible foe will prove to be a worthy villain in the Avengers sequel due out May 1, 2015. In addition to naming the next Avengers film, Marvel touted another Phase 2 flick in the works: James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Due August 1, 2014, Galaxy stars Chris Pratt (Zero Dark Thirty) as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace (The Hobbit) as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator) as Korath, Benicio del Toro (Traffic) as The Collector, John C. 70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.

That is the most concise synopsis you’ll find of the upcoming film adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 science fiction novel Ender’s Game. Written and directed by Gavin Hood, Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as the film’s child protagonist Ender Wiggin, Harrison Ford is Colonel Graff, Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) is Valentine Wiggin, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is Petra Arkanian, Viola Davis (The Help) is Major Anderson, and Sir Ben Kingsley is Mazer Rackham.
