Movie trailer round-up: ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’, ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’ & ‘Machete Kills’

Ben Stiller deviates from his usual comedy fare to direct and star in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a film adaptation of the classic 1939 short story by James Thurber. Stiller plays Walter Mitty, a LIFE magazine employee and daydreamer who fantasizes about a life much more exciting than his own. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. The stylistic trailer scored with the song “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men captivates. Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn, Patton Oswalt and Adam Scott also star in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty out Christmas day.

Movie trailer round-up: ‘Gravity’, ‘Spider-Man 2’, ‘Catching Fire’, ‘Riddick’, ‘Ender’s Game’ & ‘Kick-Ass 2’

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed space pic Gravity. It’s bring described as a “heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.” Bullock and Clooney play astronauts who get stranded beyond Earth when their spacewalk goes awry; they have limited oxygen and zero communication with our planet and therefore they must work together to survive. Following major conventions like CinemaCon and Comic Con, there is much buzz surrounding Gravity; you can experience what Con-goers saw right here. Above is the initial teaser trailer that released earlier in May; after the break you’ll discover a trio of teasers that expand on just how intimate and thrilling this movie promises to be. In particular the seemingly “one-shot” teaser titled “Detached” will have you reeling when you witness Bullock’s character losing control and aimlessly float into the dark pit that is space. Chills, I tell you! Gravity opens in 3D and IMAX October 4.

Movie trailer round-up: “In Saturn’s Rings” takes you into real space, Laika’s next animated pic “The Boxtrolls” & more

There are countless movies that take us into the great unknown called space. The recent summer blockbuster Star Trek Into Darkness wowed audiences with its grand special effects as the USS Enterprise battled the Vengeance among the stars. With today’s advanced computer technology filmmakers can make us truly believe we are witnessing action taking place in space. However, if you’re looking to actually journey into space in theatres, you might want to put In Saturn’s Rings on your radar.

With the aid of equipment set up in Saturn’s orbit, filmmaker Stephen van Vuuren has been capturing over a million extremely high-resolution images and stitching them all together to form a 45-minute trek around the sixth planet from the sun. He notes:

The film is 100% created using only flat 2D photographs (often hundreds or thousands per frame) stitched together for massive hundred megapixel+ resolutions that are scaled and zoomed using techniques developed by the filmmaker, based on Ken Burns and 2.5D photo animation processes. No 3D models, texture mapping, 3D CGI, camera projection, cloning or painting or any other VFX techniques are used – every pixel is what was captured in the photograph. The photographs are processed as minimally as possible – much less than your average Instagram photo.

Catch a first look at the breathtaking film in a teaser embedded above. Experience space like never before when In Saturn’s Rings comes exclusively to IMAX theatres in spring 2014.

Before you dive into the trailers, check out these two behind-the-scenes featurettes for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel and Guillermo del Toro’s robots versus monsters action film Pacific Rim. “Our approach was not a comic book Superman; it was just to be a more realistic Superman, a Superman that exists in the real world,” says screenwriter David S. Movie trailer round-up: ‘Ender’s Game’, ‘The World’s End’, ‘Captain Phillips’ & ‘Big Hero 6’

70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.

That is the most concise synopsis you’ll find of the upcoming film adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 science fiction novel Ender’s Game. Written and directed by Gavin Hood, Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as the film’s child protagonist Ender Wiggin, Harrison Ford is Colonel Graff, Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) is Valentine Wiggin, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is Petra Arkanian, Viola Davis (The Help) is Major Anderson, and Sir Ben Kingsley is Mazer Rackham. There are many who thought a film adaptation of this sci-fi classic couldn’t be done, but take a look for yourself in the premiere trailer embedded above; as a big fan of the book I’m excited to see more. Are you?

Ender’s Game hits theatres November 1.

Movie trailer round-up: ‘The Hangover Part III’, Joss Whedon’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’, ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, ‘After Earth’ & ‘Oblivion’

So many trailers, so let’s get right to it. First up is our very first look at the final installment of director Todd Phillips’ Hangover trilogy. The Hangover Part III brings back Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis as the three best friends that anyone could have and they’re going back to Vegas where it all began. The overall plot is still being kept under wraps and this teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much except that Alan’s dad played by Jeffrey Tambor passes away and John Goodman shoots someone in cold blood in front of the guys. The official terse synopsis goes like this: “This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.” A laugh-out-loud teaser and the promise that this one won’t mimic the wedding/get drunk and blackout/wake up and remember nothing formula from the first two films should have you extra excited for the Wolfpack’s last hurrah. The Hangover Part III opens May 24. (After the break check out the movie’s official poster that parodies the eighth and final Harry Potter “It All Ends” poster.)

Movie trailer round-up: ‘The Internship’, ‘Monsters University’, ‘Oblivion’ & ‘Fast & Furious 6’

Wedding Crashers duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are teaming up again for The Internship. The comedy directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and written by Vaughn and Jared Stern follows the guys landing a coveted internship at Google. The all-star cast also includes John Goodman, B.J. Novak, Aasif Mandvi, Rose Byrne,Max Minghella, and apparently Will Ferrell makes a cameo. The question remains if he can one-up his Chaz “Mom the meatloaf, f–k” appearance from Wedding Crashers. A very enjoyable trailer for The Internship is above. It hits theatres June 7. And who cares if it’s really one giant advertisement for the company behind Android–this looks funny.

Super Bowl XLVII: the not quite record ratings and the commercials

Power outage and all, Super Bowl XLVII proved to be an exciting game after all. Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens dominated the game early on and the San Fransisco 49ers used the approximately 35 minutes of dark downtime to reenergize and make an unexpected comeback that nearly ended the game in their favor. When the fourth quarter came to a close, however, it was the domineering Ravens and MVP Flacco on top besting the 49ers 34 to 31.

Unlike previous years, last night’s Super Bowl did not break ratings records to become the most watched telecast in history. 108.41 million people tuned into the big game making it the third most watched TV program behind Super Bowl XLVI (111.3 million) and Super Bowl XLV (111 million). (And if you’re curious, the hyped post-Super Bowl episode of Elementary attracted 20.8 million viewers with a 7.8 rating in the 18-49 demo. These numbers are huge for the CBS freshman procedural, but they do not match the 37.6 million viewers that tuned into The Voice‘s post-game telecast last year.) Maybe we’ll see another record-breaking explosion in eyeballs next year?

Moving onto the ‘mericals. This year companies had to fork over a whopping four million dollars for a 30-second spot. I’ve posted a bunch of my personal favorites after the break, including those from Volkswagon, Oreos, Doritos, and Taco Bell and trailers for anticipated movies like Iron Man 3 (see the extended cut!), Star Trek, and Fast and Furious 6. You can rewatch nearly all of them at YouTube’s Ad Blitz center. Which are your favorites? Continue reading Super Bowl XLVII: the not quite record ratings and the commercials
